Borax (Borax, a mineral drug), after removing coarse shells and levigation; Calcined Calamine (Calcined Calamine, a zinc ore drug), levigated; Sanhuang Shui (Decoction of Rhizoma Coptidis, Radix Scutellariae, and Cortex Phellodendri) filtered to remove dregs and dust, then boiled dry; Lingsha (Lingsha, a compound prepared from cinnabar and mercury), finely ground. Each of the above takes 1 liang. Frankincense (Resina Olibani) and Myrrh (Resina Myrrhae) each take 2 qian; Borneol (Borneolum Syntheticum) takes 3 qian; Moschus (Moschus) takes 1.5 qian.
For all medicinal preparations intended for the eyes, one must be careful in grinding and sieving. The standard is that it makes no sound when pinched by hand and feels free of sand when bitten by teeth. Store them in good jars for future use. Any medicine that is expensive, rare in large countries, or yields miraculous effects from a single stone or piece of wood is considered a "treasure." For instance, Borax dispels sweat odor, Lingsha calms fire pathogens, Calcined Calamine removes nebulae, Cuttlebone (Hai Piao Xiao, cuttlefish bone) absorbs dampness, Frankincense and Myrrh promote blood circulation and relieve pain, while Borneol and Moschus extract toxins and disperse wind. However, unless dealing with long-standing deep diseases, it is difficult to eliminate the pathogen. Those who rigidly adhere to their master's transmission without understanding syndrome differentiation and treatment are like having a jade cup without a bottom. Even if they possess eight precious items—gold, bi-jade, pearls, amber, coral, agate, Kongqing (Azurite), and rock crystal—which are expensive and rare, these are equivalent to dust. Therefore, this pill has nothing particularly unique, but is specifically named "Eight Treasures Pill" (Ba Bao Dan).
Winter honey (true bee sugar collected in winter), resembling white wax, 1 he; Coptis Rhizome (Rhizoma Coptidis), 5 qian, decocted until concentrated and filtered clean; Sheep gallbladder (Gallus Bladder), two pieces, preferably from a goat, combined and decocted until slightly thick. Add Lead Tetroxide (Minium, red lead powder), 6 qian, and Prunus Persica Seed Frost (Rui Ren Shuang, processed seed of sweet apricot), 3 qian. Stir constantly until it forms an ointment. If too hard, add honey; if not thick enough, decoct longer. Remove from heat, let cool slightly, add Borneol (Borneolum Syntheticum), 1 qian. Store in a lead jar. Process Rui Ren Shuang separately in a small bowl with honey, mix with Human Milk Powder (Ren Ru Fen), 2 qian, and grind until extremely pure and blended. Add this mixture to the jar first, then pour in the ointment and stir evenly for better results.
In the above formula, Rui Ren Shuang moistens dryness and nourishes the spirit, while Sheep gallbladder and Coptis Rhizome clear heat and reduce fever. However, these four ingredients melt immediately upon entering the eye. Although they may provide temporary relief, they cannot cure the disease. Therefore, one must rely on the heavy, adherent nature of Minium to attach to the lesion and the pungent, intense quality of Borneol to scatter filth and remove stagnation. For those who do not understand syndromes or medicine, applying this blindly is indeed a "miraculous pill" that renders the hundred points useless. Having practiced medicine for over twenty years, I have evaluated various drugs as superior or inferior. Yet, this person always praised and gifted me a square-inch portion of this ointment, valuing it more than a hundred pairs of silk. It is named "Purple Gold Ointment" (Zi Jin Gao), not referring to its color or material, but expressing self-pleasure and self-respect.
If this ointment is occasionally unavailable, use half a small cup of Egg White (Ovi Albumen), mixed with 1 fen of Coptis Rhizome powder (Chuan Lian Mo), stirred until dissolved. Wait for it to clarify, then dip the tip of a brush to apply. Alternatively, steam Coptis Rhizome and Mint (Herba Menthae) with human milk and white honey, or steam sheep gallbladder with honey until thick, and apply drops. The world calls this "Simple Natural Ointment" (Jian Yi Zi Ran Gao), which is also effective.
