Ginseng Radix, Astragali Radix (Huangqi), Schisandrae Fructus, Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Rehmanniae Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Corni Fructus, Dioscoreae Rhizoma, Cinnamomi Cortex.
Excessive blood loss leading to blurred vision and mental confusion, dizziness, and night sweats is primarily treated with Yiying Decoction (Benefit Ying Decoction).
Ying (Nutritive Qi) refers to the essence that resides within Yin. "Benefiting Ying" means to elevate, regulate, and mediate it. People know that the aforementioned symptoms indicate a deficiency of Yin, and they use rich and moistening herbs such as Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Rehmanniae Radix, Corni Fructus, Schisandrae Fructus, and Cinnamomi Cortex to nourish. However, they do not realize that Yin is rooted in Yang. Herbs like Ginseng Radix, Astragali Radix, Dioscoreae Rhizoma, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, and Ziziphi Spinosae Semen are thick, dense, and peaceful, truly tonifying the primordial root of the Blood aspect. Therefore, these ten ingredients tonify both Yin and Yang, yet it is uniquely named "Benefit Ying."
The poem states: The ten items of Benefit Ying include Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Schisandrae Fructus, Ginseng Radix, Corni Fructus, Huai Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Rehmanniae Radix, Jiaozhi Cinnamon (Cinnamomi Cortex), Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, Fen Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Bei Huangqi (Astragali Radix).
Ginseng Radix, Lycii Cortex (Digupi), Lycii Fructus, Ophiopogonis Radix, Asparagi Radix, Schisandrae Fructus, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, Cinnamomi Cortex, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Rehmanniae Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (honey-fried).
Deficiency damage leading to dried-up blood and surging phlegm-saliva, red face, irritability, thirst, and eye pain as if affected by pathogenic factors, is primarily treated with this formula.
Eye pain accompanied by irritability should be attributed to Ministerial Fire (Junhuo). However, since it is described as "deficiency damage" and "dried-up blood," there must be aspects of the patient's condition that are difficult to describe conventionally. Administering peaceful and authentic flavors can accurately harmonize Zong Qi (Pectoral Qi), hence the name change to Pingqi (Harmonizing Qi). Further clarifying its meaning: Surging phlegm-saliva indicates Water failing to return to its source; red face, irritability, and thirst indicate Fire failing to take its proper position. Bitter-cold purgative herbs are only suitable for the initial stage of disease when Yuan Qi (Primordial Qi) is not yet damaged, the pathogenic force is vigorous, and the pulse is full and rapid, used temporarily to treat the branch (symptoms). If the illness persists and involves deficiency, they must not be taken. Wang Taipu said: If heat treatment is not completed and middle-jiao cold arises, and if Stomach Earth is injured, the source of Lung Metal's nurturing is cut off. Here, Rehmanniae Radix, Ophiopogonis Radix, Asparagi Radix, and Anemarrhenae Rhizoma nourish Water to clear dryness, preventing Bing-Ding Fire (Heart Fire) from contending with Long-Lei Fire (Dragon-Thunder Fire); Angelicae Sinensis Radix, whole Rehmanniae Radix, Lycii Fructus, and Schisandrae Fructus nourish Yin to control Fire, fearing conflict between Jueyin Liver and Taiyin Spleen; Ginseng Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Cinnamomi Cortex, and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata greatly benefit Qi and Blood. This is like the sovereign and ministers governing according to the Mandate. It is said that governing with virtue causes those who receive orders to happily serve, which is practicing righteousness. Hence it is also called Hezhong (Harmonious Unity). For those with pre-existing Liver Fire, remove Cinnamomi Cortex and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, and substitute with Moutan Cortex and Paeoniae Radix Alba.
The poem states: Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Quan Di Huang (Whole Rehmanniae Radix), Gui Hua Hong (Cinnamon/Danggui color red), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) seals the book with Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Qiju (Lycii Fructus) and Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) are sweet but one should not cling to them, combined with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) to decide on Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix).
