Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Astragali Radix (Huangqi), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Asteris Herba (Ziwan), Morus Cortex (Sangbai Pi) (honey-fried), Rehmanniae Radix (Dihuang) (take with a little honey).
For cough caused by Qi deficiency, which subsequently leads to red eyes and discharge of ocular mucus, this formula is indicated.
Coughing without expectoration is called "Ke" (cough); expectoration without sound is called "Sou" (phlegm-rattling); both sound and expectoration present is called "Kesu" (cough with phlegm). Causes can be attributed to wind, fire, phlegm, or food stagnation. If it is known to be due to Qi deficiency, it is unrelated to the aforementioned four causes.
This occurs because Lung Qi is weak and fails to generate Kidney Water, leading to Fire hyperactivity, thus causing these symptoms. Therefore, Ginseng Radix and Astragali Radix are used to tonify Lung Qi; Asteris Herba and Morus Cortex are used to clear Lung heat; Rehmanniae Radix and Schisandrae Fructus are used to nourish Lung Yin. After taking several doses, Metal (Lung) becomes prosperous and generates Water (Kidney); when Water is sufficient, Fire is subdued, and the disease naturally resolves.
The poem states: To tonify the Lung, rely on Renshen and Huangqi; Wuweizi and Sangbai Pi assist; Dihuang combined with Ziwan ensures mutual need between Metal and Wood.
To treat Spleen and Kidney Yang deficiency and cold, poor appetite, fever with night sweats, spermatorrhea or leukorrhea, depletion of True Qi, emaciation, and weakness.
Rehmanniae Radix (Dihuang), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao), Corni Fructus (Zhuyu), Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), Lycii Fructus (Gouqi), Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Cynomorii Herba (Rongrong), Foeniculi Fructus (Xiaohui), Dipsaci Radix (Xuduan), Cudraniae Fructus (Chushi), Cuscutae Semen (Tusizi), Morinda Officinalis Radix (Baji).
This is a formula that harmonizes Water and Fire and simultaneously tonifies the Spleen and Kidney. The Kidney is the root of congenital constitution, and the Spleen is the root of acquired constitution. If these two roots are deficient, premature aging occurs, manifesting as the aforementioned symptoms.
Substances that are moistening and rich in flavor can tonify Water (Kidney); substances that are light, clear, and mild in flavor can tonify Fire (Spleen/Yang). When both are thoroughly supplemented, one may return to youth; hence, the aforementioned herbs are used.
The poem states: Since ancient times, Hushao Dan has been a rare and miraculous formula; Chushi, Zhuyu, Shanyao, and Xiaohui are excellent; Gouqi, Tusizi, Duzhong, Niuxi, Baji, Dihuang, and Xudzu; together with Rongrong, Yuanzhi, Wuweizi, and Huixiang.
Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum Gelatinum (Guijiao) and Cervi Cornu Degelatinatum (Lujiao) mixed with honey, formed into pills the size of Chinese melon seeds, coated with Cinnabar (Zhusha).
Lycii Fructus (Gouqi), Rehmanniae Radix (Dihuang), Cynomorii Herba (Rongrong), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (each 4 liang), Yangqishi (vinegar-boiled), Magnetitum (Cishi) (3 liang), Morinda Officinalis Radix (Bajitian), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma (Weirui), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi) (each 2 liang), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui), Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chenxiang) (each 1.5 qian), Prunellae Spica (Xiakucao), Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua), Cudraniae Fructus (Chushi) (each 1 liang).
For men and women suffering from Shirong (Loss of Prosperity/Vitality), resulting in emaciation, pale and sallow complexion, blurred and dry eyes with tearing, and frequent visual hallucinations of black spots, this formula is indicated. Smooth and beautiful circumstances, and a contented mind are all referred to as "Rong" (Prosperity). If any of these fail to reach their peak, one endures shame and humiliation, experiencing sorrow exceeding that of ordinary people. In severe cases, both mindset and reality become unbearable to recall. This hidden heart disease consumes the Primordial Spirit, leading to the aforementioned symptoms. This condition, named Shirong, is among the most difficult to treat. Although Danggui, Dihuang, Wuweizi, Cishi, Weirui, and Guijiao benefit the True Essence on the left, allowing for agile movement like a heavenly horse, triggering reactions upon contact; even if Gouqi, Bajitian, Lujiao, Yangqishi, Rougui, and Chenxiang strengthen True Qi on the right, they cannot overcome the rigidity like a wooden chicken, where Qi remains stagnant and difficult to flow. As for Juhua and Huainiu Xi, one clears and one promotes drainage; Chushi and Xiakucao disperse and open up. Although vision may temporarily revive, how can one ensure no future recurrence of knotting disasters given the silent, lingering, deeply郁 (depressed/stagnant) emotions? The formula is named Zhujing (Residing Scenery), merely to help pass the time during illness. May sons and daughters not exhaust power completely, nor enjoy blessings fully. The reason for not exhausting is that the Way of Heaven returns cyclically; leaving room allows for retreat. The I Ching says: "When the sun reaches noon, it begins to decline; when the moon is full, it begins to wane." Observing images and contemplating words enables self-cultivation and reflection.
The poem states: Rougui, Chenxiang, Chushi, and Yangqishi; Xiakucao, Weirui, and Niuxi should not be disregarded; Cishi, Dihuang, Gouqi, and Juhua are abundant; Balin's flavor is managed with composure.
