Aloe vera (Luhui), Picrorhiza rhizome (Huhuanglian), Gentian root (Longdancao), Ligusticum chuanxiong rhizome (Chuanxiong), Pyrus pyrifolia seed (Wuyi) (each 6 qian), Angelica sinensis (Danggui), White peony root (Baishao) (each 1.5 liang), Aucklandia root (Muxiang) (8 qian), Licorice root (Gancao) (5 qian).
In the above formula, Muxiang, Gancao, and Baishao harmonize Liver Qi and soothe Spleen Earth; Danggui and Chuanxiong nourish Blood to benefit muscle tissue; Huhuanglian and Longdancao treat bone-steaming consumptive fever; Luhui and Bai Wuyi kill tangible pinworms (Ganchong).
Besides treating abdominal masses due to malnutrition (Ganji), this formula also treats conditions caused by long-term wind-heat invasion, resulting in corneal opacity (Yunyi), emaciation, fever with thirst, as well as sores and ulcerations in the mouth, teeth, ears, and neck, and scrofula (Luojie).
Poem says: Gentian is not Muxiang, Chuanxiong pairs fully with Wuyi, Huanglian, Huangqin, Baishao, Gancao combines with Danggui.
Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Baizhu), Gypsum fibrosum (Shigao) (dosage unspecified), Talcum (Huashi), Ligusticum chuanxiong rhizome (Chuanxiong), Saposhnikovia root (Fangfeng), Platycodon root (Jiegeng), Schizonepeta spike (Jingjie), Peucedanum root (Qianhu), Bupleurum root (Chaihu), Licorice root (Gancao), Mint herb (Bohe), Scutellaria root (Huangqin), Anemarrhena rhizome (Zhimu), White peony root (Shaoyao), Gardenia fruit (Zhiren), Angelica sinensis (Danggui), Rhubarb rhizome (Dahuang, processed), Mirabilite (Mangxiao).
Excessive consumption of rich and sweet foods leads to severe and violent pathogenesis; this formula governs such cases.
Rich and sweet foods are originally necessary for health maintenance, but overindulgence causes Qi and Blood to undergo pathological changes. Combined with a constitution that is inherently robust, leading to hyperactive Stomach Yang, the eyes suddenly become red and swollen, resembling pregnancy or a toad, followed by the appearance of purulent membranes (Ningzhi) and white-yellow layers emerging in disorder. It becomes necessary to employ this cold-natured formula to temporarily exert vigorous purgative authority. This is what is meant by "when the pathogen is contrary, attack it," urgently treating the branch symptoms. However, cold medicines often damage Qi; therefore, the sweetness of Baizhu is used to support Stomach Qi. Once Stomach Qi is tranquil, Chuanxiong, Fangfeng, Bohe, Jingjie, and Chaihu can ascend and disperse the pathogen. Danggui and Shaoyao are used to protect Yin; once Yin and Blood are solidified, Qianjie, Jiegeng, Zhizi, Huangqin, and Huashi can clear and guide the heat downward. Shigao and Zhimu sweep away heat, accelerating its departure. Dahuang and Mangxiao cleanse the Lower Jiao (Bladder/Intestines) and handle the aftermath. If the pathology is not caused by rich foods, nor is the constitution inherently robust, administering this formula is inappropriate, as it may cause Yin excess to force Yang to hyperactivity on top. One must inquire and palpate thoroughly; one must not merely treat symptoms without addressing the root cause.
Poem says: Zhiren, Shigao, refined Mangxiao, Dahuang; Baizhu, Pi (Spleen/Stomach), Jingjie, Chaihu, Li (Defense); Zhimu, He (Why/How), Fangfeng, Zuo geng (Jiegeng); Chuanxiong, Huangqin, Shaoyao, Gancao, Bohe, Qianhu in auxiliary positions.
