A round eyeball, one inch in diameter, suddenly protrudes, resembling a bright red lychee that has been split open. To identify which pathogenic qi causes this disease: it is due to the decline and aging of Earth and Heaven (Spleen and Kidney), devastated by cold wind.
This condition presents with the white sclera becoming red, swollen, and drooping; if accompanied by tongue curling down to lick the lips, the appearance is terrifying. In mild cases, the eyelids are not swollen, and pain is bearable, but eye discharge is condensed, sticky, and dirty. Vision at the Jingming point (BL-1) has gradually been lost, and the body is lingering on the verge of death; this is indeed a rare disease. Speculating on the cause, this person has always had a constitutionally deficient endowment and contracted severe external wind pathogens. The physician failed to support the righteous qi and suppress the pathogenic factors, instead erroneously employing dispersing methods to exhaustion, thereby weakening the Zhenyuan (True Yuan/Essential Qi). The illness lingers and swells. Furthermore, mistaking it for excessive fire, bitter-cold purgatives were used, causing the Gen-Kun Earth (Spleen/Stomach) to fail. It is like tilting a vessel that is already full and then squeezing it; how could it not overturn? Moreover, Danxi stated: "The Spleen possesses the quiet virtue of Kun, yet its transportation function embodies the vigorous nature of Qian." Thus, it allows the Yang of Heart and Lung to descend and the Yin of Liver and Kidney to ascend. Now, with external妖厉 (demonic/severe) wind invasion and internal injury from herbal medicines, movement and stillness, ascending and descending have lost their normal course. Heaven and Earth do not interact, resulting in Pi (Stagnation/Obstruction). When stagnation reaches its extreme, clear and turbid energies mix, meridians and collaterals become blocked, leading to heat retention and dampness accumulation. Damp-heat combats each other, causing alternating consumption and swelling, ultimately forming the "Withered and Fallen" syndrome. Although major tonifying and mildly harmonizing formulas such as Jin Suo Gu Yuan Tang (Golden Lock to Secure the Origin Decoction), Bai He Gu Jin Tang (Lily to Secure the Metal Decoction), Sheng Mai San (Generate the Pulse Powder), and Yi Ying Jian (Nourish the Nutrient Decoction) can gradually shrink and reposition the eyeball, preventing the previous doubt and sorrow, the eye will never look aesthetically pleasing again. The sages said that the love for one's child knows no bounds. Yet, seeing a beloved child harmed by greedy, incompetent physicians who accomplish nothing—parents in such situations can be considered foolish. Dozing off, sighing endlessly, the heart feels as if being pounded.
The contours of Water and Heaven connect through blue clouds; Metal and Wood battle in the west wind. One must know that tides follow the sunset; in the desolate places, it seems as if fire burns the void. Initially like a thread, subsequently like a rainbow, surrounding the Qing Gong (Pupil/Dark Palace). Gazing until vision fails, waking from dreams with soul dissipated, asking where the divine pupil is.
This condition manifests as both left and right scleras turning pink-blue or deep azure. Although currently harmless, the source is distant and long-lasting, with no foreseeable end. This is because the natural color of Metal is white, but it is steamed and oppressed by Wind-Wood, causing green qi to wander out, forcing its way into the Qi Wheel (Sclera). Green and white mix and blend, resulting in a blue-green hue. Wood, though controlled by Metal, can still cause harm; especially when the host is weak and the thief strong, how can it not act violently? Furthermore, wind generates water movement, and Yi-Gui share the same source (Liver and Kidney); thus, the pupil must suffer size abnormalities. If the pupil size is normal but slightly blue and dry, it is due to latent deficiency-fire in the upper diaphragm combined with slight damp-heat in the Spleen and Lung collaterals. This is common in autumn, commonly called "Rice Awl Eye." Some children have scleras slightly turning green, corneas slightly white, with a red ring between black and white like a belt; this is Heart Fire invading Lung Metal, with Metal-Wood conflict. Because the patient has been ill for a long time and overdosed on medication, Liver pathogenic factors become depressed and unable to舒展 (smoothly flow), moving erratically, internally injuring Yuan Qi. Once Yuan Qi is deficient, Liver pathogens become entrenched. This is what is meant by "Yin Re" (Excessive Heat), which becomes hyperactive and insults Metal. Metal represents military imagery; if it cannot win, it loses opportunity. The eyes display the true colors of the Five Elements. With Metal and Wood opposing each other and mixed winds acting, the color that should be green turns white, and the color that should be white turns green. If abdominal distension and undigested stool diarrhea occur, Wood-Fire will invade Spleen-Earth, inevitably leading to Gan Shi (Childhood Malnutrition/Food Stagnation). Additionally, middle-aged people with severe Spleen-Kidney decline cannot nourish and transform, causing Wood to lose spring-like vitality. They may see objects like smoke, trees, clouds, and forests, or have pupils uneven in height, with turbid color like mud, and red bands embracing the Feng Lun (Cornea/Iris) and tying them. Coupled with frequent internal fatigue and external infections, variations of Jue Syndrome (Cold Extremities/Rebellious Qi) exist that cannot be fully described by pen and ink. Generally, using Hua Guo He Huan Wan (Flower and Fruit Joyful Union Pill) taken over a year will allow black and white to return to their original colors. My commentary states: "Yin" means excess or overflow. "Yin Re" refers to damp-heat soaking and overflowing, likely referring to the mother. Because the mother has heat pathogens, the child inherits her Qi endowment, and the heat transmits inward. "Fan Ke" (Reverse Restriction) implies that originally Zheng Qi (Righteous Qi) restricts Xie Qi (Pathogenic Qi); when Xie Qi is strong, it harms Zheng Qi. As in the above case, if Metal could overcome Wood, how could Liver pathogens enter the Lungs? It is because Metal is deficient and Wood is hyperactive, violating the rule of restriction. It is like using a small knife to chop a large tree; the tree remains unharmed while the knife breaks first. Ni Shi wrote about diseases of Yin Re Fan Ke: "Jueyin Wood conceives Zi Fire; Zi uses excess to overcome, disaster arises from reverse restriction, so Liver suffers restriction and the eyes also fall ill." From this theory, the one generating Wood is Fire, and the one overcoming Wood is also Fire. Does the Heart have sizes, and does Fire divide into Jun Huo (Ministerial Fire) and Xiang Huo (Monarchial Fire)? Readers should clarify their minds and comprehend this, naturally turning anger into laughter.
