Song on Adhesion of Eyelids to the Cornea: The upper and lower eyelids adhere to the cornea, accompanied by excessive discharge, itching, and pain. This condition arises from an excess of wind-damp-heat pathogens in the Spleen and Stomach. The formula used is Juhua Tongsheng San (Chrysanthemum Purging-Decoction), composed of Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huashi (Talcum), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), with additional Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), and Manjingzi (Viticis Fructus).
[Note] The syndrome of eyelids adhering to the cornea presents with sores inside the eyelids, discharge, tearing, itching, and pain, causing the eyelids to stick together and making it difficult to open them. This is due to the exuberance of wind-damp-heat pathogens in the Spleen and Stomach, combining to attack upwards. It is appropriate to use Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Wind-Protection Universal-Preserving Decoction) added with Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), and Manjingzi (Viticis Fructus) to disperse wind-pathogens externally and clear pathogenic heat internally.
Formula for Juhua Tongsheng San (Chrysanthemum Purging-Decoction):
Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (5 fen) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (steamed with wine, 5 fen) Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (1 qian) Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (stir-fried, 5 fen) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (raw, 1.5 qian)
Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica) (5 fen) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (5 fen) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (1 qian) Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (5 fen) Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (5 fen) Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (5 fen) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (1 qian)
Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) (stir-fried until black, 1 qian) Huashi (Talcum) (2 qian) Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) (5 fen) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (5 fen) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (stir-fried, 5 fen)
Additionally: Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Manjingzi (Viticis Fructus), each 5 fen.
Grind the above into a coarse powder. Add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains. Strain and take warm after meals.
Song on Floating Jade Nebula Covering the Pupil: The syndrome of floating jade nebula covering the pupil is sometimes painful; wind-heat rushes to the brain, obscuring the pupil. Treatment should employ Xidao Tongsheng San (Knife-Washing Universal-Preserving Decoction) added with Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Jili (Tribuli Fructus), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Mu Zei (Equiseti Hiemalis Herba), Cao Jueming (Cassiae Semen), Chan Tui (Cicadae Periostracum), Manjingzi (Viticis Fructus), and Qingxiangzi (Vernoniae Semen).
[Note] In the syndrome of floating jade nebula covering the pupil, at the onset, there may be pain. A jade-colored nebula appears on the cornea, covering the pupil. This is caused by extreme heat in the Liver channel, with wind-heat rushing to the brain. It is appropriate to use Xidao San (Knife-Washing Powder) to dispel wind-heat and eliminate the nebula.
Formula for Xidao San (Knife-Washing Powder):
This is Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Wind-Protection Universal-Preserving Decoction) added with Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Jili (Tribuli Fructus), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Mu Zei (Equiseti Hiemalis Herba), Cao Jueming (Cassiae Semen), Chan Tui (Cicadae Periostracum), Manjingzi (Viticis Fructus), and Qingxiangzi (Vernoniae Semen), each 1 qian.
Song on Membrane Entering the Water Wheel (Cornea/Pupil): After the healing of eye sores, a membrane enters the water wheel (cornea/pupil area). The scar from the sore does not disappear, and a nebula gradually forms and invades the water wheel. This is due to deficiency-heat in the Lung and Liver, combined with dryness in the Large Intestine. If left untreated for a long time, it will damage the pupil spirit. Treatment should employ Retie Yin (Heat-Retreating Decoction), composed of Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Chongwei Zi (Leonuri Fructus), Heishen (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma or Scrophulariae Radix variant), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix).
[Note] "Membrane entering the water wheel" originates from sores on the white and black parts of the eye. After healing, the scar remains, and a nebula gradually forms, invading the water wheel. This is caused by accumulated heat in the Liver channel, dryness and stagnation in the Large Intestine, and rebellious pathogenic heat rising upwards. It is appropriate to use Retie Yin Zi (Heat-Retreating Decoction) to clear and descend the heat.
Formula for Retie Yin Zi (Heat-Retreating Decoction):
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian) Chongwei Zi (Leonuri Fructus) (2 qian) Heishen (Black Ginseng/Scrophularia) (1 qian) Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (2 qian) Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (5 fen)
Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (2 qian) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (2 qian)
Grind the above into a coarse powder. Add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains. Strain and take warm after meals.
