San Yi (Scattered Cataract) presents with a shape scattered like scales or spots, appearing alternately cyan and white within the pupil. The eyelids develop millet-like granules accompanied by ulceration and pain; after being manipulated by a golden needle, vision is restored to clarity. Huan Jing San (Restore Vision Powder) employs Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed), Fu Ling (Poria), Xi Xin (Asarum), and wind-dispelling herbs. Subsequently, Bu Gan San (Tonify Liver Powder) is used, containing Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Mu Zei (Equisetum Hiemale), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Bai Shao (White Peony Root), and Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome).
[Note] San Yi refers to cataracts that protrude from within the pupil, scattering like scales or spots, alternating in color between cyan and white, with millet-like granules forming in the eyelids and causing ulceration, along with pain in the pupil. It is appropriate to first administer Huan Jing San for clearing deficiency and tonifying after the internal cataract has been displaced by a golden needle, and then use Bu Gan San to consolidate the therapeutic effect.
Formula for San Yi Huan Jing San: Ren Shen (1 qian), Wu Wei Zi (0.5 qian), Jie Geng (1 qian), Che Qian Zi (2 qian), Fu Ling (1 qian), Xi Xin (0.5 qian), Fang Feng (2 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains. Strain and take warm after the evening meal.
Formula for San Yi Bu Gan San: Dang Gui (2 qian), Mu Zei (1 qian), Fang Feng (1 qian), Shu Di Huang (2 qian), Bai Shao Yao (1 qian), Chuan Xiong (0.5 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains. Strain and take warm on an empty stomach.
Yan Yue (Crescent Moon) cataract contains the shape of a crescent moon; a bay of white mist grows downward. This is caused by brain wind accumulating heat and pouring down into the eyes, while liver and kidney deficiency leads to impaired vision. Tong Ming San (Illuminate Brightness Powder) contains Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root) and Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), along with Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Bai Fu Ling (White Poria), Xi Xin (Asarum), and Chong Wei Zi (Leonurus Fruit). Zhui Yi Wan (Descend Cataract Pill) uses Shi Jue Ming (Haliotidis Shell), She Xiang (Musk), Qing Yu Dan (Green Carp Gallbladder), Qing Yang Dan (Blue Sheep Gallbladder), Niu Dan (Ox Gallbladder), and Xiong Dan (Bear Gallbladder).
[Note] Yan Yue Neizhang (Internal Obstruction resembling a Crescent Moon) features a bay of white mist in the upper half of the pupil, faintly resembling the shape of a new moon, covering and drooping downward. This arises because brain wind and accumulated heat pour into the eyes, resulting in internal obstruction, which is a syndrome of both liver and kidney exhaustion. It is suitable to administer Tong Ming San and Zhui Yi Wan.
Formula for Yan Yue Tong Ming San: Fang Feng, Huang Qin, Ren Shen, Fu Ling (each 1 qian), Xi Xin (0.5 qian), Chong Wei Zi (2 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains. Strain and take warm after the evening meal.
Formula for Wudan Yan Yue Zhui Yi Wan (Five-Gallbladder Crescent Descending Cataract Pill): Shi Jue Ming (1 liang), She Xiang (a small amount), Qing Yu Dan (7 units), Li Yu Dan (7 units), Qing Yang Dan (7 units), Niu Dan (5 qian), Xiong Dan (1 fen).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder and bind with wheat paste to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 0.5 fen with tea infusion on an empty stomach.
