Pediatric smallpox lesions invading the eyes manifest as redness, swelling, difficulty in opening the eyes, tearing with a gritty sensation, and pain. If prolonged, silver-colored nebulae (cloudy opacities on the cornea) may form. This condition arises from residual heat in the Liver meridian rushing upward to the eyes. Treatment should employ Honghua San (Safflower Decoction), composed of: Gancao (Licorice Root), Dangguiwei (Tail of Angelica Sinensis Root), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root Prepared by Steaming), Chishao (Red Peony Root), Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Zicao (Arnebia Root), and Honghua (Safflower).
[Note] The syndrome of pediatric smallpox invading the eyes occurs when, during the course of smallpox, toxic lesions enter the eyes, causing redness, swelling, difficulty in opening, photophobia, tearing, and pain. Over time, silver-colored nebulae develop.
This is caused by residual heat in the Liver meridian attacking the pupil after the resolution of smallpox. It is appropriate to use Honghua San (Safflower Decoction) to clear heat and dissipate blood stasis, allowing the syndrome to resolve spontaneously.
Honghua San (Safflower Decoction) Formula:
Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Dangguiwei (Caulis et Radix Angelicae Sinensis caudex), Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Chishao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Dahuang (Rhizoma et Radix Rhei), Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Zicao (Radix Arnebiae), Honghua (Flos Carthami) (each 5 fen).
Grind the above herbs into coarse powder. Use ten stalks of Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus Medulla) and ten leaves of Zhuye (Leaf of Bambusa Tuldoides) as guides. Add one and a half cups of water, decoct until five fen remains, remove the dregs, and take warm after meals, away from food intake.
Lulu Zhuanguan (Rotating Eye Syndrome) results from hyperactive Liver Wind, causing the eyeballs to rotate incessantly, resembling the turning of a windlass. Mild cases present with strabismus (deviation of the pupil); severe cases present with ectropion or reversal of the pupil. In the initial stage, Gouteng Yin (Uncaria Decoction) is indicated, composed of: Gouteng (Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis), Quanxie (Scorpio), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae). Later, Tiandong Yin (Asparagus Decoction) should be administered, composed of: Chifuling (Poria Cocos with Red Cortex), Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Tiandong (Tuber Asparagi), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Chongweizi (Fructus Chorisporae Bungei), and Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae).
[Note] The syndrome of Lulu Zhuanguan (Rotating Eye Syndrome) is due to excessive accumulation of Wind pathogen in the Liver meridian, causing the eyeballs of both eyes to rotate不定ly, similar to a windlass. Mild cases involve deviation of the pupil; severe cases involve reversal of the pupil. Initially, Gouteng Yin (Uncaria Decoction) is suitable to disperse Wind pathogen; once stabilized, Tiandong Yin (Asparagus Decoction) is used for regulation and recovery.
Gouteng Yin (Uncaria Decoction) Formula:
Gouteng (Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis, 5 fen), Quanxie (Scorpio, stir-fried to remove toxicity, 1 qian), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) (each 7 fen), Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, 3 fen), Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae, 7 fen), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, stir-fried, 1.2 qian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, 3 fen).
Grind the above herbs into coarse powder. Add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, remove the dregs, and take at any time.
Tiandong Yin (Asparagus Decoction) Formula:
Chifuling (Poria Cocos with Red Cortex, 7 fen), Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii, 7 fen), Tiandong (Tuber Asparagi, 1 qian), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis, 5 fen), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 7 fen), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, 1 qian), Chongweizi (Fructus Chorisporae Bungei, 1 qian), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, 5 fen).
Grind the above herbs into coarse powder. Add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, remove the dregs, and take warm after meals.
