Shensui pain (Sudden severe eye pain) occurs suddenly. The heat in the eyelids and pain in the eyeball are caused by wind-heat of the Lung and Liver (Zang-Fu organs: Lungs and Liver) attacking upwards. The treatment should use Xigan San (Liver-Washing Powder), which contains Xiaoshao (Mirabilite), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), and Jiegeng (Platycodon Root). Gardenia (Zhizi), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), and Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu) may be added. If the heat is severe, Heishen (Black Ginseng), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), and Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root) can be added. For external application, Shiyandan (Swallow Stone Pill) is suitable.
[Note] The syndrome of Shensui pain appears suddenly in a person who was previously healthy. The eyelid skin feels hot, and the eyeball feels like it is being pierced, causing unbearable pain. This is due to wind-heat of the Lung and Liver attacking the eyes. Cold water washing is contraindicated. It is appropriate to take Jiutiao Xigan San (Wine-Mixed Liver-Washing Powder) internally and apply Shiyandan externally.
Jiutiao Xigan San Formula:
Xiaoshao (Mirabilite), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome, stir-fried), Heishen (Black Ginseng) — equal parts.
For severe heat, add Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root) and Dangguiwei (Tail of Angelica Sinensis).
Grind the above herbs into powder. Take 2–3 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine. Administer twice daily.
Shiyandan (See formula at the end of this volume).
Protruding high eyeballs with swelling and pain are caused by wind-heat and toxic fire rushing upward to the eyes. After acupuncture to reduce heat, use Jiegeng Yin (Platycodon Decoction). The formula contains Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), Chongweizi (Leonurus Fructus), Baishaoyao (White Peony Root, stir-fried), Heishen (Black Ginseng), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), and Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root). For conditioning, use Huanjing Wan (Restore Vision Pill), which contains Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Fuling (Poria), Xixin (Asarum Root), Shanyao (Dioscorea Rhizome), Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Yuanzhi (Polygala Root), and Chongweizi (Leonurus Fructus).
[Note] The syndrome of protruding high eyeballs is caused by wind-fire and toxic heat rushing upward to the eyes, resulting in unbearable pain and swelling/protrusion of the eyeball. Initially, use an acupuncture needle to drain the clear saliva and toxic fluid. Subsequently, administer Tuire Jiegeng Yinzi (Heat-Reducing Platycodon Decoction) and condition with Huanjing Wan for recovery.
Tuire Jiegeng Yinzi Formula:
Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), Chongweizi (Leonurus Fructus), Baishaoyao (White Peony Root, stir-fried), Heishen (Black Ginseng), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) — each 1 qian.
Grind the above herbs into coarse powder. Add two cups of water and decoct until one cup remains. Strain and take warm after meals.
Huanjing Wan Formula:
Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry, 0.5 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Root, 2 liang), Fuling (Poria, 1 liang), Xixin (Asarum Root, 0.5 liang), Shanyao (Dioscorea Rhizome, 1 liang), Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Yuanzhi (Polygala Root), Chongweizi (Leonurus Fructus) — each 2 liang.
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Mix with refined honey to make pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 3 qian on an empty stomach, washed down with tea water.
Leaking tear duct with pus between the eyelids involves either flowing pus or clear saliva. There are no corneal opacities (Yi zhang), and there is no pain. This is caused by wind-heat attacking and Heart fire flaring upward. The treatment should primarily use Zhuye Xiejing Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction for Draining the Meridian). The formula contains Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Qingzhuye (Green Bamboo Leaf), Gancao (Licorice Root, processed), Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Caojueming (Astragalus Gypsum or Bilestone), Chuan Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Baifuling (White Poria), Chi Shaoyao (Red Peony Root), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), Zhiziren (Gardenia Seed, stir-fried), and Chuan Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome).
[Note] The syndrome of leaking tear duct with pus occurs between the eyelids, with either pus or clear saliva flowing out. There are no corneal opacities, and there is no pain. This is due to wind-heat attacking and Heart fire flaring upward. It is appropriate to use Zhuye Xiejing Tang as the primary treatment.
