Ocular diseases caused by excessive blood loss, including epistaxis (nosebleed) and hematochezia (blood in stool) in men, as well as metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding) and leukorrhea (vaginal discharge) postpartum in women. Due to excessive blood loss, the eyeballs become painful, accompanied by photophobia (aversion to light), soreness and dryness, weakness of the eyelids, and soreness and pain at the corners of the eyebrows and the Taiyang region (temporal area). The appropriate prescription is Xiong Su San (Perilla and Ligusticum Powder):
Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix) (each 4 fen); Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 5 fen); Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Gui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 6 fen).
Take the above ingredients, add half a zhong (traditional Chinese unit of volume) of water, decoct until seven-tenths remains, and take warm. If nausea occurs and food intake is impaired, add two slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens).
Note: Ocular conditions in women during pregnancy and postpartum differ from those in ordinary people. One must carefully differentiate the syndrome and administer medication appropriately to avoid harming the fetus.
During pregnancy and postpartum, disorders often arise from disharmony of Qi and Blood, leading to upward attack of dryness-fire, stagnation of Yin and Yang, or invasion of Wind pathogen due to deficiency, with evil fire infiltrating. Additionally, emotional depression (Seven Emotions) and the Six Exogenous Pathogens may induce external evils. One should not be rigidly confined to symptoms such as nebula (corneal opacity) or redness and pain. For pregnancy, the principle is only to calm the fetus and clear heat; for postpartum, the principle is only to nourish Ying (nutritive Qi) and disperse stagnation. These two conditions must be distinguished as excess or deficiency. In the Qi level, regulation and dispersion are suitable; in the Blood level, tonification and promotion of circulation are suitable, leading to natural recovery. It is most important to avoid harsh medicines like Xiao Shi (Natrii Sulfas) and Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) that break blood, as well as medicines that drain the Small Intestine. Using dispersing and promoting medicines is acceptable. This is because pregnant women's illnesses are mostly of an excess nature. If a pregnant woman suffers from heat accumulation in the Heart and Spleen, red eyes, thirst and bitterness in the throat and diaphragm, restlessness, and frequent fright, the following is suitable:
Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Host), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Xi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each equal parts).
Decoct the above ingredients in plain water, add one zhong of Zhu Li (Bambusae Succus in Pluma), and take by mixing in a bowl.
If a pregnant woman has internal heat accumulation causing sudden blindness in both eyes, the following is suitable:
Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (each 8 fen); Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (stir-fried with salt water), Chong Wei Zi (Leonuri Fructus) (each 1 qian 2 fen); Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (each 5 fen).
Decoct in water and take hot.
If a pregnant woman contracts external Wind-Cold, suffering from high fever all over the body, blurred vision, and dizziness, the following is suitable:
Zi Su (Perillae Folium), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (charred black), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 1 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5 qian).
Grind the above into powder. Each time take 5 qian, add three slices of ginger and three segments of scallion head, decoct in water, and take warm.
If a pregnant woman suffers from vertigo, blurred vision, and inability to see objects, it is likely due to injury to fetal Qi and upward attack of heat toxin. The following is suitable to take:
