After the orifices are opened, why is the fumigation and washing decoction (Xunxi Tang) used immediately?
The essence and qi of the five zang organs, six fu organs, twelve meridians, and three hundred and sixty collaterals all ascend to the eyes to provide clear vision. Now, since internal and external pathogenic factors have been stagnant and knotted for a long time, the clear yang orifices of the head and eyes naturally become invaded by these pathogenic factors. It is necessary to use fumigation and washing herbs to mobilize the accumulation and stagnation within the contours of the eye; and to promote the free flow of heat knotting within the meridians. There are five major collaterals in the pupil (Tongshen), corresponding to the Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lung, and Kidney; in chronic illness, all five collaterals become diseased. There are also six medium collaterals, corresponding to the Bladder, Large Intestine, Small Intestine, Sanjiao (Triple Burner), Gallbladder, and Pericardium; in chronic illness, all six collaterals become diseased. Fumigation and washing are required to open the hair follicles and eye orifices, allowing pathogenic factors in the meridians to dissipate outward, so that healthy qi can recover.
Since the internal and external orifices are now open, it would be appropriate to use herbs such as Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), [text missing], and Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) to nourish and tonify. Why, then, is this not done, but instead, Qishi Zhou (Goji Berry Porridge) is used?
The most refined essence of the body's qi and blood ascends to the eyes to provide clear vision. In the elderly, both qi and blood are deficient, and the refined essence cannot ascend to the eyes. Consuming Qishi Zhou (Goji Berry Porridge) nourishes Stomach Qi. The Stomach is the source of the five zang and six fu organs and the foundation for developing Shen Ji (spiritual mechanism/vitality). To nourish Jing and Blood, one must first regulate Stomach Qi. Once Stomach Qi is strong, it naturally generates Qi and Blood. When Qi and Blood are sufficient, the refined essence of Qi and Blood naturally ascends to the eyes, resulting in clear vision.
Having used Qishi Zhou (Goji Berry Porridge) to nourish Jing and Blood, why is Zhugan Fu (Pork Liver Preserved Meat) also used?
The Liver is the "son" of the Kidney. Herbs that tonify the Kidney act through the Liver, because the Liver opens into the eyes. Liver Blood nourishes Gallbladder Juice, which in turn nourishes Shengao (the vitreous humor-like substance). Shengao nurtures the Pupil (Tongshen), and Shenshui (ocular fluid) moistens Shengao. The Liver, Gallbladder, Shengao, and Kidney Water are all primarily governed by Liver Blood. Therefore, the *Neijing* states that the eyes can see when they receive Blood. As for Jing generating Qi, Qi generating Shen, Shen generating Ming (clarity), and Ming enabling vision, these terms refer to the Liver, Gallbladder, Shengao, Kidney Water, True Blood, True Qi, and True Jing, not solely to Kidney Water. This demonstrates that the Liver is the root of the Pupil, while the Kidney is the source of Jing and Light.
