If there is a nebula (corneal opacity) in the eye, it must be accompanied by itching or a sensation of stuffiness. Why is this?
This is because the nebular membranes and stagnation accumulated in the deficient orifices are all active and turning outward, while the obstruction of Wind pathogen at the hair follicles has been opened. This indicates that the Healthy Qi (Zheng Qi) is driving out the Pathogenic factors, which cannot be contained within the meridians, naturally resulting in itching and a feeling of oppression. Decocting this medicine, soaking a green silk cloth in it, and wiping the eyes will cause the toxic vapors to dissipate externally. The meridians will become hollow and free of stagnation, and clear vision will recover spontaneously. This is what is meant by "Clear Yang ascends, Turbid Yin descends."
In the elderly, the Yang Qi is weak, making it easy for pathogenic factors to ascend and enter the empty orifices. A mild infection results in external obstructions (exogenous eye diseases), while a severe infection leads to internal obstructions (endogenous eye diseases). External obstructions remain covered and bound for a long time, while internal obstructions become increasingly blocked with blood stasis over time. Consequently, the previously deficient meridians become filled with excess pathogens, and the previously unobstructed meridians become blocked. Previously, Goji Berry Porridge was used to nourish Essence and Blood, and Pork Liver Fries were used to tonify the Liver and Kidneys. This allows the Clear and Bright Qi from the Zang-Fu organs and the Twelve Meridians to ascend to the eyes. At this stage, the Divine Light (Shen Guang) is weak and cannot project outward. It is necessary to use Yinshen Dan (Spirit-Guiding Pill) to guide it, so that the essence gradually recovers and the Divine Light naturally emerges. This is the wonderful application of Yinshen Dan.
Why was Xunxi Tang (Fumigation and Washing Decoction) used initially to open the hair follicles, and Sai Kong Qing (Fake Azurite) chosen for the final treatment?
Eating Goji Berry porridge nourishes Stomach Qi. The Stomach generates Qi and Blood; once Qi and Blood are generated, the meridians become active. Eating pork liver opens the Liver orifice, allowing the brightness of the Kidney meridian to flow freely. By this time, Healthy Qi has recovered and pathogenic factors have retreated. The Yin turbidity, filth, and heat-toxin accumulated in the meridians flow out constantly, manifesting as ocular discharge (rheum) and tears, indicating that the cloud-like nebula is dissolving. When Fire is excessive, the rheum becomes thick and forms a nebula; when Fire subsides, the formed nebula disperses into thin rheum. If the rheum and saliva are sticky and muddy inside the eye causing discomfort, or if there is photophobia (aversion to light), one must frequently wash the eyes with Sai Kong Qing to resolve heat, disperse rheum and tears, and cure the disease even in cases of photophobia. After the curative effect is achieved, Jiawei Dihuang Wan (Modified Rehmannia Pill) and other formulas should be used to consolidate the root.
Jiawei Dihuang Wan (Nourishes Yin, consolidates Essence, and brightens the eyes; it is neither cold nor hot, a balanced formula suitable for long-term use to prolong life.)
Huai Dihuang / Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (8 liang) Fuling / Poria (mixed with milk and sun-dried) Shanzhanyu / Fructus Corni (washed with wine and dried) Shanyao / Rhizoma Dioscoreae (each 4 liang) Zexie / Rhizoma Alismatis (3 liang) Juhua / Flos Chrysanthemi (3 liang) Gouqizi / Fructus Lycii (6 liang, dried) Danpi / Cortex Moutan (3 liang, washed with wine and stir-fried) Liaowuweizi / Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis (dried 2.5 liang) Bilibi / Spina Gleditsiae Sinensis (stir-fried, thorns removed, 3 liang)
Except for Dihuang paste which is added separately, the remaining herbs are ground into fine powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds.
Take 3-4 qian each time on an empty stomach, washed down with light salt water. For severe deficiency, add one Zijheche / Placenta Humana (Human Placenta) to the Dihuang Wan. Wash clean with wine, place in a porcelain jar, cook until soft with wine and water, mash into a paste, or dry and grind into powder to add to the pills. Take Tianwang Buxin Dan (Emperor of Heaven's Tonic for the Heart Pill) in the evening. Taking these two formulas morning and evening will yield effects over time. Currently, treating eye diseases often focuses on tonifying the Kidney, neglecting the Heart. However, the Heart belongs to Ministerial Fire (Jun Huo).
