On Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction), Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction), Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), and Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Drink).
On the modification methods of Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), and other formulas.
The Heavenly Master said: The method of "Same Treatment" refers to using the same formula to treat multiple different diseases. For instance, Siwu Tang can treat hematemesis (vomiting blood) and also treat hematochezia (blood in stool); Xiaoyao San can treat Liver Qi Stagnation (Wood Depression) and also treat various types of depression; Liujunzi Tang can treat damage from dietary stagnation and also treat accumulation of phlegm and Qi obstruction. However, although the formula is the same, the dosage ratios differ, and the modifications vary. One cannot rigidly adhere to using one formula for only one disease, nor apply the usage for one disease directly to another. For example, when treating hematemesis, Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong) and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) should be added to Siwu Tang; when treating hematochezia, Sanguisorbae Radix (Diyu) and Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) should be added. Furthermore, when treating Liver Qi Stagnation (Wood Depression), Moutan Cortex (Danpi) and Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi) should be added; when treating Heart Fire Stagnation (Fire Depression), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) should be added; when treating Lung Qi Stagnation (Metal Depression), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) and Perillae Folium (Zisuye) should be added; when treating Spleen Qi Stagnation (Earth Depression), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) and Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu) should be added; when treating Kidney Qi Stagnation (Water Depression), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie) and Polyporus (Fuling) should be added. If there is meat food stagnation, Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha) should be added to Liujunzi Tang; if there is rice food stagnation, Hordei Fructus Germinatus (Maiya) and Aurantii Fructus (Zhike) should be added; if there is wheat food stagnation, Raphani Semen (Luobozhi) should be added. The subtleties of the Same Treatment method are certainly worthy of careful examination.
Master Zhang said: The method of Same Treatment is not limited to the three formulas mentioned above; I will expand upon it. Guipi Tang can treat individuals whose Liver is injured by depression and anger, and it can also treat symptoms of insomnia due to Heart Qi deficiency. Xiao Chaihu Tang can treat the initial stage of Wind-Cold invasion (common cold) and can also harmonize complicated conditions resulting from mishandled Cold Damage (Shanghan). Shen Su Yin can treat invasion by Wind pathogen and can also treat chest stuffiness caused by Qi stagnation. Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang can raise Yang Qi and also tonify Spleen Yin; it aids digestion at the initial stage of injury and expels pathogens after transformation; malaria relies on it to disperse pathogens, and diarrhea relies on it to consolidate the body's resistance and prevent collapse. Sijunzi Tang can tonify insufficient Qi and also drain excessive Fire. There are many such examples, too numerous to enumerate, all depending on one's ability to comprehend deeply.

On Dampness Strike, Heat Stroke, and Cold Strike
The Heavenly Master said: The method of "Different Treatment" refers to employing different treatment methods for the same disease. For instance, a person suffering from Dampness Strike may be treated with the method of "Opening the Ghost Gate" or the method of "Purifying the Clean Mansion." Although both are water-dampness syndromes, why do different treatment methods yield effectiveness? Generally, "Opening the Ghost Gate" refers to opening the pores of the skin and hair; "Purifying the Clean Mansion" refers to promoting urination and defecation. Although the treatment methods differ, the underlying principle remains consistent. What is this consistency? The syndrome of edema originates from the stagnation of Earth Qi (Spleen/Stomach Qi). When Earth Qi stagnates, Water naturally becomes obstructed and fails to flow. "Opening the Ghost Gate" is like digging tributary channels; "Purifying the Clean Mansion" is like dredging the sea mouth. Therefore, although the treatments differ, both are effective. The formulas have been detailed in previous texts, so they are not discussed here. It is hoped that people will understand other Different Treatment methods through this insight.
Master Zhang said: There are many Different Treatment methods, and the Heavenly Master was too brief; I will expand upon them. For example, in cases of Heat Stroke, some use hot dispersing methods, while others use cold resolving methods; in treating Cold Damage, some use Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) and others use Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction). Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Mahuang (Ephedra) have distinct cold and hot properties, yet both are effective. This is because both are dispersing agents. When Wind-Cold initially invades between Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) levels, heat can be dispersed early, and cold can be dispersed later. If Wind-Cold has just invaded the skin and hair and is about to enter the Stomach Meridian, the Wind pathogen is still cold, so Guizhi can be used to disperse with heat. If Wind-Cold has entered Ying and Wei from the skin and hair, the cold transforms into heat. Generally, when Healthy Qi retreats into the Fu organs, the skin and body shell are left to the pathogen's occupation, forming internal heat syndromes; thus, Mahuang can be used to disperse with cold. Although the treatment methods differ, the goal of expelling pathogens is the same, hence both are effective.
For Heat Stroke, some use Xiangru (Moslae Herba) to disperse with heat, while others use Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) to disperse with coolness. They seem different, but they are not. Heat Stroke results from contracting Summer-Heat pathogens in summer. Once the pathogen enters the Zang-Fu organs, it must be expelled and dispersed. Both Xiangru and Qinghao are supreme herbs for dispelling Summer-Heat; although their properties differ in cold and hot nature, their efficacy in expelling pathogens is identical. This is what one should know about Different Treatment. Other Different Treatment methods cannot be arbitrarily generalized from this.
