This is Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with Dangguiwe (Tail of Angelica Sinensis Root), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), plus Baishao (White Peony Root), Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root), and Sumu (Sappan Wood), used to treat hemoptysis (coughing up blood) and hematemesis (vomiting blood).
This is Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), and Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), used to treat conditions arising from dampness prevalent in the seventh and eighth lunar months.
According to Five Elements theory, the child element (Water) can strengthen the mother element (Metal), leading to excessive heat; when damp-heat combines, it inevitably overacts upon Geng Metal (Large Intestine), causing coldness, thereby rescuing Dry Metal. If Dry Metal is invaded by damp-heat pathogens, it severs the source of Cold Water's generation.
Kidney deficiency leading to severe exacerbation of Wei syndrome (flaccidity syndrome) and Jue syndrome (cold extremities/counterflow qi) manifests as flaccidity and paralysis below the waist, inability to move, abnormal gait, and tilting of both feet. This formula is indicated for such conditions.
It treats women suffering from illness where diet remains normal, yet they experience vexatious heat, inability to lie down, and instead must lean forward to breathe. This condition is named "Zhuanbao" (displacement of the bladder), resulting in urinary retention. This occurs because the bladder ligaments are twisted, thus causing this situation. Urination becoming smooth indicates recovery. Cui Shi named this formula Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia), treating Hongxiangjiao (foot-leg qi disease/gouty arthritis) ascending to the lower abdomen with numbness. Qianjin Fang (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) uses it to treat deficiency-fatigue insufficiency, thirst with desire to drink, lumbar pain, and hypogastric tension. Later practitioners use it to treat Mingmen fire decline failing to warm Earth (Spleen/Stomach), resulting in Spleen-Stomach weakness, poor appetite, loose stools, umbilical and abdominal pain, and frequent nocturia.
Ingredients: Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) (eight liang), Shanzhuyu (Fructus Corni), Shuyu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) (each four liang), Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis), Fuling (Sclerotium Poriae), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan) (each three liang), Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) (quantities unspecified).
The above eight ingredients are powdered, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take fifteen pills with wine, increasing to twenty pills, taken twice daily. Jiegu treated severe Shenxiao (Kidney Wasting-Thirst) using modified formulas adding Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) and Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata).
Zhang Zhongjing stated that for long-term use, remove Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) and add Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae). Yao Gong stated to add Wuweizi (three liang) and Rongrong (Cibotii Rhizoma) (four liang). Zhang Wenzhong stated Wuweizi (each four liang). Zhouhou Fang (Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies) stated Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) (four liang), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) and Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis) (each one liang), and the remaining ingredients each two liang. Xue Xinpu used this formula to treat Kidney Water insufficiency with deficient fire flaming upward, manifesting as fever with thirst, sores on the mouth and tongue, or gum ulceration, sore throat, emaciation, and night sweats; in these cases, Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae) (four liang) was used. Wang Yugong used Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae) (...
