Jiyin Dihuang Wan (Yin-Nourishing Rehmannia Pill): Based on Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill from the Golden Cabinet), with added Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry) and Lurong (Deer Antler). Fuzi (Aconite Root) and Wuweizi are each used in an amount of two liang, while the remaining herbs are each used in one liang. It treats cold deficiency of the Kidney manifesting as dark complexion, deafness, weakness and softness of the feet and knees, and difficult urination.
Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill, from Qianjin Yi Fang): Composed of Dihuang (Rehmannia Root), Fuling (Poria), Xuanshen (Scrophularia Root), each five liang; Shuyu (Dioscorea Rhizome), Shanzhuyu (Cornus Fruit), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome), Shaoyao (Peony Root), each four liang; and Fuzi (Aconite Root), three liang. Total nine ingredients. This formula is also known as Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill), which is Zhongjing's Shen Qi Pill with Fuzi and Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) removed by Qian Yithai. It treats insufficiency of the Kidney Meridian causing fever, thirst, stranguria (dysuria with obstruction), qi stagnation, dizziness and vertigo of the head and eyes, blurred vision, deafness, dry throat, tongue pain, loose teeth, weakness and flaccidity of the waist and legs, spontaneous sweating, night sweats, hematochezia (blood in stool), various bleeding disorders, aphonia, water overflowing to transform into phlegm, and heat due to blood deficiency. Its merits cannot be fully described.
Jisheng Shenqi Wan (Sheng's Kidney Qi Pill): Based on Zhongjing's Shen Qi Pill, with Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed) and Niuxi (Achyranthes Root) added. Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root) is used in four liang, Fuling in three liang, Fuzi in five qian, and the remaining herbs in one liang each. Niuxi serves as the Jun Herb (Monarch Herb). This is the revised version by Xue Xinpu (Xue Ji). It treats lung and kidney deficiency causing heavy sensation in the waist and swollen feet, difficult urination, or abdominal swelling, edema of the four limbs, or panting and urgency with profuse phlegm. The effect is miraculous. This syndrome often arises from spleen and stomach weakness and improper treatment, leading to injury of Yuan Qi (Original Qi); only this medicine can rescue it.
Modified Bajun Wan Plus Formula: Based on Modified Bajun Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill), with Lu Jiao (Deer Horn) and Chenxiang (Aquilaria Wood) added (each of the eight ingredients one liang); Chenxiang and Guigui (Cassia Bark) are each five qian. It treats Sanxiao (Three Wasting-Thirst syndromes, akin to diabetes mellitus) in severe cases. For severe weakness, Fuzi may be added.
Bushen Wan (Kidney-Tonifying Pill): Based on Zhongjing's Shen Qi Pill, with Wuweizi added to tonify the water and fire of the left and right Kidneys simultaneously.
Mingmu Dihuang Wan (Bright-Eye Rehmannia Pill): Based on Liuwei Dihuang Wan, with Shengdi (Raw Rehmannia Root), Dangguiwei (Tail of Angelica Sinensis Root), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), and Wuweizi added. It treats liver and stomach yang deficiency with yin weakness and flaming up of deficient fire, causing blurred vision or even dry and astringent eyes.
Dazao Wan (Great Creation Pill): Based on Liuwei Dihuang Wan, removing Danpi (Moutan Cortex) and Zexie, adding Niuxi, Duzhong (Eucommia Bark), Rongzhu (Cistanche Stem), Yuanzhi (Polygala Root), Shichangpu (Acorus Rhizome), Huixiang (Fennel Fruit), Ba Ji (Morinda Root), Gouqi (Goji Berry), Wuweizi, and Chushizi (Cudrania Fruit). Each herb is ground into fine powder, mixed with jujube flesh and refined honey, and made into pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 50-70 pills per dose, on an empty stomach, with warm wine or salted water decoction. It treats spleen and kidney deficiency-cold, poor appetite, sallow complexion, spermatorrhea, and leukorrhea. It also treats depletion of True Qi and emaciation of the body.
Huan Shao Dan (Return to Youth Elixir): Uses Shudi, Shanzhuyu, Gan Shanyao (Dried Yam), plus Wuweizi, Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Danggui, Rongzhu, Gouqi, Gan Juhua (Chrysanthemum Flower), and Ba Ji, all in equal proportions. Ground into powder and made into pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 70-80 pills per dose, on an empty stomach, with plain water decoction. It treats deficiency of the Three Yin Meridians of the Foot, flaming up of deficient fire causing dilated pupils, unclear or blurred vision, photophobia, or sudden hallucinations. Its efficacy is similar to Huan Shao Dan.
