This formula is also known as Ganjie Tang (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction), named Rusheng Tang (Like-Sage Decoction) by Emperor Renzong of Song. It consists of Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction) plus Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 1 liang). *Jingui Yaolue* indicates its use for Lung Abscess (Fei Yong), characterized by cough, chest fullness, aversion to cold with shivering, rapid pulse, dry throat, occasional expectoration of turbid saliva with a foul odor, and long-standing expectoration of pus resembling rice porridge; administration promotes the expulsion of pus and blood. It is also used to treat Blood Bi (Blood Stasis Obstruction).
Cheng Wuji stated that when Yang pathogenic factors transmit to the Shaoyin channel, causing sore throat due to pathogenic heat, Gancao Tang suffices for recovery. If sore throat results from the struggle between Cold and Heat, and Gancao Tang proves ineffective, administer Jiegeng... Heqizi Pi (Pericarpium Arecae Semen, 2 qian) decocted, strained, and drunk clear, named Heqizi San (Areca Peel Powder), treating aphonia (loss of voice). ○ For cough with rebellious Qi, add Chenpi (Tangerine Peel). ○ For phlegm-cough, add Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus). ○ For alcohol toxicity, add Gegen (Puerariae Radix). ○ For shortness of breath, add Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix). ○ For expectoration of pus and blood, add Ziwan (Asternis Radix). ○ For epidemic toxin swelling, add Shuniuzi (Arctii Fructus) and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma). ○ For cough with thirst, add Wubeizi (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus). ○ For vomiting, add Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma). ○ For red eyes, add Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Dahuang. ○ For chest fullness and diaphragmatic obstruction, add Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus). ○ For insomnia, add Zhizi. ○ For epigastric stuffiness, add Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus). ○ For skin pain, add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix). ○ For facial and ocular edema, add Fuling (Poria). ○ For sore throat, add Shuniuzi and Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam). ○ For Lung Flaccidity (Fei Wei), add Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini), which can replenish Qi. ○ For eruption of macules/rashes, add Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) and Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba). ○ For inability to speak, add Banxia.
