[Shizhongru / Stalactite]
The flavor is sweet, and the nature is warm. It primarily treats cough with rebellious Qi ascending (Ke Ni Shang Qi). It brightens the eyes, benefits essence (Jing), calms the five Zang organs (Wu Zang), unblocks all joints (Bai Jie), opens the nine orifices (Jiu Qiao), and promotes lactation. (Taiping Yulan refers to it as "Liugong Ru"). It grows in mountain valleys.
It transforms from rigid rock into softness; milk-like substances seep from rock veins. Steamed like chestnuts, turning yellow; ice accumulates halide crystals. Arranged like goose quills in tubes, interlaced like cicada wings and silk threads. Compared among medicinal stones, how can Immortal Herb (Xian Mao) be counted?
Han Yu's poem mentions: "Milk-like substances intersect rock veins." Wu Pu stated: "It is yellowish-white and hollow inside with passages connecting through." The Book of Tang records: Gao Jifu frequently submitted memorials stating gains and losses, his words sincere and urgent. The Emperor bestowed a dose of Stalactite upon him, saying, "You offer advice as beneficial as medicinal stone (Yao Shi); I repay you with medicinal stone." The Xu Chuanxin Fang states: "A thousand jin of Stalactite is not worth one jin of Immortal Herb (Xian Mao)."
[Nieshi / Alum Stone]
The flavor is sour, and the nature is cold. It primarily treats alternating chills and fever, diarrhea and dysentery, excessive leukorrhea (Bai Wo), yin erosion (genital ulcers), malignant sores, and eye pain. It strengthens sinews, bones, and teeth. After refining and processing, it can be taken orally to lighten the body and prevent aging, thereby extending lifespan. It is also known as "Yuni". It grows in mountain valleys.
Yuni comes from Yuzhe, located on the shady side of Nüchuang Mountain. Cold condenses while heat bakes; wounds are large and pain deep. Used to dye black fabrics, changing colors easily. Refined and taken to regulate the mind, scoffing at those who are thin as leaves, yet secretly attaching themselves to high peaks.
Wu Pu stated: "Alum Stone (Fanshi) is also called Yuze." The Classic of Mountains and Seas records: "Nüchuang Mountain, its shady side has much Nieshi." Huainanzi records: "Use Ni (alum/iron sulfate) to dye black silk." Huang Tingjian said: "In the wilds of Jiangnan, there is a flower. Locals collect its leaves, burn them to ash, and use them to dye purple-black without needing alum. Hence, it was renamed Shanfan Flower."
[Xiaoshi / Nitre]
The flavor is bitter, and the nature is cold. It primarily treats accumulation of heat in the five Zang organs and gastric distension with obstruction. It purges accumulated and knotted food, eliminates the old to generate the new, and dispels pathogenic factors. After refining, it becomes paste-like. Long-term consumption lightens the body. (Taiping Yulan cites it as "Mangxiao" / Mirabilite). It grows in mountain valleys.
Yuanshao from Jingshan excels at washing the stomach. When made, it produces crystalline芒 (mang/nitre crystals); the taste is salty/astringent. Mutual encouragement to add meals. Resolves hangovers after drunkenness, nourishes both Yang Qi and Yin Qi. Wise and sage individuals prefer its treatment.
The Classic of Mountains and Seas records: "On the shady side of Jingshan, there is Yuanshao." Xiao is an alternative character for Xiaoshi (Nitre). Liu Ji's poem writes: "Wash the stomach and purge the intestines, completely removing the root of disease." The Records of the Grand Historian records: "Zuozuo has芒 (crystals/sparkles)." Wang Bao's fu writes: "[Xiaoshi] has flavor." Ancient poetry says: "Above, there is added meal rice." The Book of Songs says: "Having drunk wine until drunk." The Book of Rites states: "Regarding drinking, it nourishes Yang Qi; regarding eating, it nourishes Yin Qi." Huainanzi states: "Yellow corresponds to the Stomach." Wise and sage individuals favor governance (regulation).
