[Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix)]
The flavor is sweet, the nature is warm, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats severe wind-induced dizziness and headache. It addresses aversion to wind and invasion by wind pathogens. It treats blindness or inability to see. When wind moves throughout the body, causing bone and joint pain with fullness and vexation, long-term consumption makes the body feel light and agile. It is also known as Tongyun. It grows in mountains, rivers, and marshes.
[Buyang (Pollen Typhae)]
(The plant morphology) The forked tails and forked heads are distinct without any concealment. (Aroma) It scents fragrant like Coriandri Fructus (Xianghui), and its flower chambers gather tightly like Asari Herba (Luoluo - *Note: Context implies a plant with tight flower clusters, likely referring to the structure of Typha*). (Texture) Beautifully compared to coral, hard like earthworms. (Efficacy) It eliminates thirty-six types of wind pathogens, making divine vision bright and piercing.
Famous physicians say: The forked tail variety causes chronic diseases, while the forked head variety causes madness. The Analects states, "I have no secrets from you." Su Song says: In May, small white flowers bloom. They gather in the center to form large chambers, resembling the flowers of Anethum graveolens (Shiluo). The seeds resemble those of Coriandrum sativum (Huxu). Li Shizhen says: The tender shoots are pungent, sweet, and fragrant; people at that time called them Shanhucai (Coral Vegetable). Tao Hongjing says: Those with joints hard like earthworm heads are of good quality. Ri Huazi says: It treats thirty-six kinds of wind disorders. Lu You's poem reads, "Bright divine light shines on the beam at dusk."
[Xiangpu (Typhae Stamen/Pollen)]
The flavor is sweet, the nature is neutral. It primarily treats cold and heat conditions in the heart, abdomen, and bladder. It promotes urination, stops bleeding, and resolves blood stasis. Long-term consumption makes the body light, benefits qi and strength, and extends life, akin to immortals. It grows in ponds and marshes.
(The plant morphology) Green like smoke, drawing sword-like inflorescences unevenly; near the extreme shores and distant sandbars. The stem ends embrace in a ring, while the pollen drifts down. A handful holds blooming fragrance, radiating brilliance like gold dust. Below remain the white cattail shoots, containing fragrance among vegetables.
Lu Guimeng's poem reads, "Suddenly drawing sword-like greens unevenly." Zhou Zhen's ode reads, "Near the extreme shores, relying on the distant sandbars." Su Song says: In summer, stems emerge from dense leaves. Flowers embrace the stem ends. The pollen within the flowers is fine like gold dust. The center enters underground, appearing white. Eating it is sweet and crisp. Jiang Fang's ode reads, "Wearing the embracing earrings." Xie Huilian's ode reads, "Drifting with the wind." The Book of Songs states, "What are the vegetables? They are shoots and cattails."
The flavor is sweet, the nature is neutral. It primarily treats evil qi in the five zang organs and below the heart. It treats foul breath and rotting odor in the mouth. It strengthens teeth, clarifies vision, and sharpens hearing. Long-term consumption makes the body light and resistant to aging. It is also known as Sui. It grows in ponds and marshes.
(The plant morphology) Emerging from water with a downy appearance, growing densely in early spring. Plump and red-floating, fat congealing like white jade. Lotus flowers distributed east and west, dragonflies flying high and low. (Efficacy) First attacking heart evil, miraculously transforming foul odors into wonders.
Su Song says: In early spring, tender leaves emerge; when coming out of the water, they appear red and white and downy. Xie Tiao's poem reads, "Leisurely interspersed with autumn lotuses." Yao He's poem reads, "East and west sharing beautiful shadows connected." Xue Hui's poem reads, "Dragonflies chasing high and low." The Xunzi states, "I first attack their evil hearts." The Zhuangzi states, "Transforming rotten and foul into miraculous and wonderful."
