[Ban Miao (Earth Bee)]
Flavor: Pungent. Nature: Neutral. Indications: Treats chronic deafness, cough with adverse qi flow (Ni Qi), and toxic vapors (Du Wa Si). It extracts thorns and induces sweating. Habitat: Grows in river valleys.
Mingyi Bielu (Records of Famous Physicians) states: Also known as Tu Feng (Earth Bee). It grows in the Bear Ear Mountain and Ke regions, or within human dwellings.
Commentary: Shuowen Jiezi states: "KT" (a character representing a type of bee), also known as KT Luo and Pu Lu, is a fine-waisted earth bee. Some write it as Luo Luo; Luo means Luo. Guangya states: Tu Feng is [missing character]. Erya states: Earth bee. Mao Shi (Book of Songs) states: The mingling (caterpillar) has young, which the Luo Luo carries. The Commentary states: Luo Luo is Pu Lu. Liji (Book of Rites) states: Governance is like Pu Lu (transforming quickly). Zheng Xuan notes: Pu Lu is Guo Luo, referring to the earth bee. Fangyan states: Among bees, the small ones are called [missing character], or You Tui. Shuowen Jiezi does not contain the character [missing character]; it might be the character "Yi" (physician/heal).
[Wu Gong (Centipede)]
Flavor: Pungent. Nature: Warm. Indications: Treats Gui Zhu (a contagious chronic consumptive disease), Gu Du (poison from venomous insects), and neutralizes poisons from various snakes, fleas (Zao, likely a variant for Zao/Flea), and fish. It kills ghostly entities, old spirits, and treats warm malaria (Wen Nue). It expels the Three Worms (San Chong, general term for intestinal parasites). Habitat: Grows in river valleys. (Taiping Yulan cites: Also known as Zhi Zhang. Daguan Bencao lists it under the entry for Shui Zhi).
Mingyi Bielu states: It grows in Jiangnan of the Great Wu region. Those with red heads and feet are of good quality.
Commentary: Erya states: Qu (maggot/larva) is Wu Gong (Centipede).
[Shui Zhi (Leech)]
Flavor: Salty. Nature: Neutral. Indications: Expels evil blood (E Xue) and stasis blood (Yu Xue); treats amenorrhea (Yue Bi; Taiping Yulan reads Shui Bi, meaning urinary retention); breaks up blood masses (Xue Jia) and accumulations; treats infertility; and promotes urination (Li Shui Dao). Habitat: Grows in ponds and marshes.
Mingyi Bielu states: Also known as [missing character], also known as Zhi Zhang. Grows in Lei Ze. Harvested in the fifth and sixth lunar months, and dried in the sun.
Commentary: Shuowen Jiezi states: Zhi is Ji; [missing character] is Zhi [missing character], which is Zhi Zhang. Erya states: Zhi Ji. Guo Pu notes: Currently, people in Jiangdong call the leeches in water that enter human flesh "Ji." Regarding Zhi [missing character] and Zhi Zhang, Guo Pu states: Details are unclear. According to Mingyi Bielu, it is simply Zhi (Leech).
