Secular bone-setters must first use an anesthetic to numb the patient until they feel no pain, before using a sharp knife to cut open the skin and extract bone fragments. If bleeding occurs, stop it with Tao Hua San. If there is slight pain, apply external anesthetic again before filing or sawing to repair and align. If there are defects, fill them with other bones, then apply Xu Jin Dan. Apply Tao Hua San around the incision, and cover the incision with Shou Kou Gao plaster. Only then should one drink light salt water and take Yi Nian Jin. The formulas for internal and external anesthetics can be found in previous sections for use.
