Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Mix with salt water for administration.
Question 25: What is the cause of red eyes without heat or pain?
Answer: This is Blood Excess syndrome. The meridians belong to Yang, and the collaterals belong to Yin. The meridians govern Qi, and the collaterals govern Blood. When Qi is excessive, it becomes stagnant; when Blood is excessive, the Liver becomes full. This manifests in the eyes, causing redness without heat or pain. This is Blood Excess syndrome. It is appropriate to take Danggui San (Formula seen in Question 11 below).
Question 26: What causes blood to invade the eyeball?
Answer: This is Liver Meridian Deficient Heat syndrome. The Liver opens into the eyes and is the residence of body fluids, as well as the gathering place of the Zong Mai (Major Collaterals). Pathogenic heat invades the Liver Meridian, leading to deficiency and abnormal blood flow, which flows into both eyes. Thus, the eyes become red and the blood invades the eyeball. It is appropriate to use Liaoqiao San (Formula seen in Question 12 below), Shun Gan San (Formula seen in Question 2 below), and Michuan Yujin San.
Michuan Yujin San Formula
Yujin (Curcumae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas) in equal proportions.
Grind these three herbs into powder. Administer mixed with natural juice from peach branches and fresh Rehmanniae Radix. Apply drops to the pupil.
Question 27: What causes chronic blurriness as if something is obstructing vision?
Answer: This is an Excess syndrome. Ying (Nutritive) Qi governs Blood, and Wei (Defensive) Qi governs Qi. The upper part corresponds to Heaven, and the lower part to Earth. The *Neijing* states: Clear Qi is Heaven, Turbid Qi is Earth. Clear Yang moves through the couli (interstices), while Turbid Yin moves into the Zang organs. The Zang organs correspond to the Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lung, and Kidney. Affected by the flow of Wei Qi into the eyes, vision becomes blurry as if obstructed. Use Zhuling Tang (Formula seen in Question 19 below) and Liaoqiao San (Formula seen in Question 12 below).
Question 28: What causes eye pain accompanied by aversion to cold?
Answer: This is a Deficiency syndrome. Wei Qi belongs to Yin but lacks Yang; Ying Qi belongs to Yang but lacks Yin. The classics state: Ying Qi is governed by the Liver, and Wei Qi resides in the Kidney. The Kidney belongs to the North and Water. If Water is attacked by pathogens, the Ying and Wei of one organ are affected, leading to pain and aversion to cold. Use the Secret Recipe Xiehuang San.
Secret Recipe Xiehuang San Formula
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 5 qian, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 5 qian, Puhuang (Pollen Typhae) 5 qian, Yujin (Curcumae Radix) 5 qian, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) 5 qian, Qinpi (Fraxini Cortex) 5 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 5 qian, Huashi (Talcum) 5 qian, Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) 5 qian, Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis) 5 qian, Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) 5 qian, Baixingren (Pruni Semen) 5 qian (each 5 qian), Tonglv (Chalcostyrum) 1 qian, Xingren 7 pieces (washed, skin and tips removed, ground separately).
Cut the herbs. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1.5 zhong of water, decoct until 1 zhong remains. Wash the eyes frequently while warm. Reheat if cooled. Wash at any time.
Question 29: What causes eye pain accompanied by body fever?
Answer: This is Ying Qi Excess syndrome. Ying Qi belongs to Yang and can cause fever; Wei Qi belongs to Yin and can cause chills. Ying and Wei are the pathways of Yin and Yang. In the upper part, they belong to the Heart; in the lower part, to the Liver and Kidney. Eye pain with body fever indicates pathology in the Heart. This is the transformation of Shaoyin Junhuo (Ministerial Fire). It is appropriate to use Secret Recipe Xixin San and Juhua San.
Secret Recipe Xixin San
Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Gancao (Licorice Root), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) in equal proportions.
Cut the herbs. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1.5 zhong of water, decoct until 1 zhong remains. After meals, add a little fresh ginger and mint, decoct together. Strain and take warm.
Secret Recipe Juhua San
Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Gancao (Licorice Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Shijueming (Argonauris Concha) in equal proportions.
Grind these seven herbs into a fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Mix with 1 zhong of water. Tea may also be used. Take after meals or before bed.
Question 30: What causes sudden dimming of vision?
Answer: This is simultaneous deficiency of Ying and Wei Qi. Ying and Wei are the pathways of Yin and Yang and the source of the Heart and Liver. When Ying and Wei flow, Qi and Blood move. If Ying and Wei contend and fail to reach the Wei level, vision will intermittently brighten and suddenly dim. It is appropriate to use Huoxue Jian (Formula seen in Question 3 below) and Ai Jian Wan (Formula seen in Question 10 below).
Question 31: What causes redness starting in the left eye and spreading to the right?
Answer: This is excessive activity of the Yang meridians. The Heart is Yang within Yin, and the Liver is Yin within Yang. Evil heat in the Heart accumulates in the Liver. Liver Qi connects with the Heart, and evil transmits to the root. The left eye belongs to the Taiyang Meridian, and the right eye to the Taiyin Meridian. This indicates excessive activity of the Taiyang Meridian. It is appropriate to use Xixin San (Formula seen in Question 29 below) and Sanhuang Wan (Formula seen in Question 4 below).
Question 32: What causes redness starting in the right eye and spreading to the left?
Answer: This is also excessive activity of the Yang meridians. The eyes have Yang collaterals and Yang meridians, as well as Yin collaterals and Yin meridians. Yin meridians govern Blood. If redness spreads from the right eye to the left, it is due to evil heat in the Liver Meridian and excessive activity of the meridians. It is appropriate to use Xiefei Tang (Formula seen in Question 6 below) and Tui Chi San (Formula seen in Question 2 below).
Question 33: What causes mutual transmission of redness between the left and right eyes?
Answer: This is attack by evil Qi in the Blood, insufficiency of the Lung Zang, manipulation by Wind Evil, and contention of hot Qi. It is appropriate to use Mimenghua San (Formula seen in Question 7 below) and Michuan Zhenzhu Gao.
Michuan Zhenzhu Gao Formula
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 3 liang, Gujingcao (Eriocauli Flos), Gancao (Licorice Root), Muzei (Equiseti Herba), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Caojueming (Vitricum), Chushizi (Euodiae Fructus), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) in equal proportions, Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum) 1 piece.
Grind into powder. Make pills the size of paulownia seeds using refined honey. Take 10 pills per dose, washed down with clear tea.
Question 34: What causes redness with itching and dryness?
Answer: This is attack by Wind Evil. The Liver is the Jueyin Meridian. Wind evil attacks internally and externally, transmitting wind-heat, causing Qi and Blood stagnation and涩 (astringency/stasis). Frequent movement of Qi evil causes itching and dryness. It is appropriate to use Erchu Gao (Formula seen in Question 13 below).
Question 35: What causes redness and ulceration of both eyelids?
Answer: This is caused by Wind-Damp Qi. The eyes are the palace of essence, gathering place of Hun and Po, source of blood vessels, head of Yin and Yang, and source of meridians. Wind evil lodges in the couli, and dampness contends, stopping in the eyelids. Thus, the eyes become red and ulcerated due to dampness. It is appropriate to use Xixin San (Formula seen in Question 29 below), Ai Jian Wan (Formula seen in Question 10 below), and Erchu Gao (Formula seen in Question 13 below).
Question 36: What causes the eyeballs to turn completely yellow?
Answer: This is caused by alcohol toxicity. Sometimes, during thirst, one drinks alcohol like water. Or, fondness for wine allows alcohol qi to invade the limbs, enter the meridians, and flow up and down. This causes blood to surge to the eyes. The damp-heat of alcohol flows into the eyes, turning them yellow. It is appropriate to use Ju Fang Sanhuang Wan (Formula seen in Question 4 below).
Question 37: What causes inability to see far?
Answer: This is injury to Ying Qi among the Zang and Fu organs. The eyes are the external manifestation of the Liver. Wind evil lodges there, weakening the palace of essence. Insufficiency of Liver Qi leads to inability to see far. It is appropriate to use Chan Hua San (Formula seen in Question 12 below) and Yanggan Wan (Formula seen in Question 7 below).
Question 38: What causes annual recurrence of eye disease?
Answer: This condition follows the changes of Heaven and Earth. Shaoyang peaks again after a Jiazi cycle, Yangming peaks again after a Jiazi cycle, Taiyang peaks again after a Jiazi cycle, and Taiyin peaks again after a Jiazi cycle. Sixty days, three hundred sixty days, its qi completes one cycle. Now, if the Taiyang meridian is diseased, it will recur in sixty days next year. It should be purged. If the Taiyang meridian is diseased, only purge the Taiyang Meridian Bladder.
Question 39: What causes inverted eyelashes (trichiasis)?
Answer: This is damage to the Spleen. The Spleen governs muscles. When muscles waste away, food intake decreases. External Wind Evil attacks the couli. Thus, toxin generates in the eyes. It is appropriate to use Ju Fang Shengfeng Tang and Zhuling Tang (Formula seen in Question 9 below).
Ju Fang Shengfeng Tang Formula
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, remove seedlings) 4 liang, Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma, raw) 4 liang, Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, white and good quality, raw, soaked and washed), Gancao (Licorice Root) 2 liang, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 2 liang.
Cut the herbs. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 2 zhong of water and 10 slices of fresh ginger. Decoct until 1 zhong remains. Strain and take warm. Take at any time.
Question 40: What causes leakage of pus from the lacrimal sac (dacryocystitis)?
Answer: This is contention of cold and heat among the five Zang organs and failure of the Kidney. It is appropriate to take Baoguang San.
Baoguang San Formula
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Longdan (Gentianae Radix), Chishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gancao (Licorice Root), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) in equal proportions.
Cut the herbs. Add 1.5 zhong of water, decoct until 1 zhong remains. Strain and take warm after meals.
Question 41: What causes fleshy growth invading the eyeball (pterygium)?
Answer: This is Spleen Excess syndrome. The Spleen is the official of granaries and the residence of muscles. Toxin attacks, and Wind Evil Qi assaults the Lung. The Lung receives Spleen evil and transmits it to the eyes. Thus, fleshy growth invades the eyeball. It is appropriate to use Yanggan Wan (Formula seen in Question 7 below), Sanhuang Wan (Formula seen in Question 4 below), Boyun San (Formula seen in Question 2 below), and Ju Fang Zijin Gao.
Ju Fang Zijin Gao Formula
Zhusha (Cinnabaris, ground separately), Ruxiang (Olibanum, ground separately), Pengsha (Borax, ground separately), Chishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) each 2 liang (washed), Xionghuang (Realgar) 2 qian (water-ground), Shexiang (Moschus, half liang, ground separately), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 5 qian.
Grind into fine powder. Mix with the ground medicines. Grind again. Make pills the size of soap pods using refined honey. Use one pill per application. Place in a clean cup, soak in boiling water. Wash the eyes in a draft-free place. Close eyes for a short time when medicine cools. Wait two to three hours, reheat, and wash again as before. One packet can be used 3-5 times. Do not wash in copper or iron vessels. Do not wash if eyes are violently red or if the pupil is damaged.
Question 42: What causes frequent red spots in the eyes?
Answer: Wind evil injures the Liver. Governing wind, if Hu (blurry/dizzy), it injures the eyes causing dimness and redness. Muscle deficiency heat causes evil Qi to affect the Liver, resulting in chronic eye disease that does not heal.
