Question 63. What is the cause of the disease characterized by closing the eyes? Answer: "Ming" (closing eyes/tearing) implies flowing. When wind pathogen invades the eyes, vision becomes dim; due to insufficiency of essence and fluids, the eyes often feel itchy, and cold tears flow incessantly, thus forming this condition. It is appropriate to use Danggui San (Angelica Decoction) (formula see Question 11 below) and Aijian Wan (Mugwort Paste Pill) (formula see Question 10 below).
Question 64. What is the cause of eyes constantly oozing pus? Answer: The eyes are the masters of the five zang organs, the splendor of the six fu organs, and the pathways for body fluids. When wind pathogen lodges in both eyes, cold tears attack each other, causing internal damage to the pupil, thus resulting in this affliction. It is appropriate to use Jiujing Wan (Eye-Saving Pill) and Hupo Gao (Amber Ointment) (formulas see Question 19 below).
Question 65. What is the cause of women experiencing strabismus or oblique vision? Answer: This is caused by the attacking and clashing of yin and yang pathogens, manifesting internally in the eyes. There is partial deficiency of the zang-fu organs and disharmony of yin and yang. It may occur once or twice a day. It is appropriate to use Jiujing Wan (Eye-Saving Pill) (formula see Question 19 below).
Question 66. What is the cause of the eyes appearing unequal in size? Answer: The eyes are the gathering place of the essence of the zang-fu organs and the source of blood vessels. When wind pathogen invades the eyes and impacts the meridians, muscles become obstructed and astringent, and qi and blood stagnate. Thus, the two eyes become uneven in size, forming this appearance. It is appropriate to use Shengfeng San (Wind-Dispelling Powder) (formula see Question 39 below).
Question 67. What is the cause of the eyes changing color between green/blue and red? Answer: This is due to evil heat impacting the liver, attacking the interior of the five zang organs, and ascending to the eyes. This causes the pupil to ulcerate and leak fluid, pouring into the meridians externally. Consequently, the color varies between blue/green, red, yellow, or black, changing unpredictably. It is appropriate to use Yanggan Wan (Sheep Liver Pill) (formula see Question 7 below), Sanhuang Wan (Three-Yellow Pill) (formula see Question 4 below), and Sanbai San (Three-White Powder) (formula see Question 60 below).
Question 68. What is the cause of persistent pain after acupuncture, cutting, or removal of nebulae in eye diseases? Answer: The eyes are the sprouts of the meridians, the essence of the five zang organs, and the pathways of the meridians. After surgical injury, if pain persists and bleeding is irregular, it is appropriate to use Mudan Jian (Peony Paste) (formula see Question 42 below) and Sanbai San (Three-White Powder) (formula see Question 60 below).
Question 69. What is the cause of excessive ocular discharge and tearing? Answer: This results from heat accumulating in the meridians, caused by excessive consumption of fried and roasted foods, leading to abundant eye discharge (discharge) and tears. It is appropriate to use Xixin San (Heart-Washing Powder) (formula see Question 29 below) and Liaoqiao San (Forsythia Powder) (formula see Question 12 below).
Question 70. What is the cause of constant tearing from the eyes? Answer: This is due to deficiency in the liver meridian. The classics state: "When the liver is deficient, its root withers," thus causing incessant flow of cold tears. It is appropriate to use Xixin San (Heart-Washing Powder) (formula see Question 29 below) and Yanggan Wan (Sheep Liver Pill) (formula see Question 7 below). Additionally, there are two other explanations: one states that incessant cold tears in the elderly are due to joint deficiency of essence and blood, suitable for using the secret formula Hujiao Wan (Pepper Pill); another states that those with head wind disease who frequently shed cold tears should use the prescription by Scholar Xu. One formula treats incessant cold tears in the elderly.
Hujiao Wan (Pepper Pill): Use only pepper ground into powder. Melt yellow wax and form pills the size of mung beans. Take 5–7 pills per dose, administered after meals with clear tea water.
Baizhu San Formula (Scholar Xu's Prescription):
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Juemingzi (Cassiae Semen) (each 5 qian).
Juhua San Formula (Chrysanthemum Powder):
Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (equal parts).
Grind all into fine powder. Form pills with refined honey, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, administered after meals with plain boiled water.
Question 71. What is the cause of eye injury from blows or foreign objects? Answer: This is caused by blood stasis pooling in the upper body and attacking the eyes. The blood vessels should be dispersed to resolve stasis. It is appropriate to use Yujin San (Curcuma Powder) (formula see Question 26 below), Xiehuang San (Crab Roe Powder) (formula see Question 28 below), Lingyangjiao San (Antelope Horn Powder), and Wutui San (Five-Shedding Powder).
Lingyangjiao San Formula (Antelope Horn Powder):
Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Chuan Shengma ( Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) (each 10 liang), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), Juemingzi (Cassiae Semen) (each 20 liang).
Grind into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with rice drink. For children, take half a qian, three times daily.
Wutui San Formula (Five-Shedding Powder):
Shetui (Bombyx Batryticatus), Fenghuangtui (Galli Ovi Testa - chicken eggshell), Rentu (Onychia Humanum - fingernail), Futui (Bombyx Batryticatus - silkworm skin/shed), Chantu (Mantis Oötheca - mantis egg case) (equal parts, burned to ash, ground finely, mixed uniformly, and ground again for a hundred times).
Make into an extremely fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, eaten with pig liver. Time is not restricted; take three times daily.
Question 72. What is the cause of nebulae in the eyes that move unpredictably? Answer: This is a disorder of the blood. The heart generates blood, and the liver stores blood. When the liver receives blood, vision is possible. Therefore, treating eye diseases requires treating the blood. Wulingzhi enters the liver meridian and is most suitable for use in Mingmu Lingzhi Wan (Vision-Clearing Wulingzhi Pill).
Mingmu Lingzhi Wan (Vision-Clearing Wulingzhi Pill):
Wulingzhi (Trogopterori Faeces) (2 liang), Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix Praeparata) (1.5 liang, processed and peeled), Moyao (Myrrha), Ruxiang (Olibanum) (each 2 liang).
Grind into fine powder. Add drops of water to form pills the size of marbles. Take one pill per dose, ground down with ginger wine and swallowed.
