This text describes the symptoms, etiology, and treatment methods for two types of eye diseases.
First Condition: When this eye disease first occurs, the eyes appear hazy and dim, without redness or pain, and there is no membrane (翳膜) inside. This is caused by Kidney deficiency and exhaustion, and insufficient Liver Qi. The patient frequently sees various shapes of "flowers" (visual disturbances) before their eyes, which may be black, white, yellow, or green. Patients with this condition must strictly avoid sexual intercourse; if they read small print at night, they risk losing their sight. Initially, it may be difficult to distinguish the shape of an object, which may later progress to Qing Mang (severe visual impairment or blindness). It is urgent to tonify and regulate the Five Zang Organs to allow the condition to recede quickly. It is suitable to take Bu Gan San (Liver-Tonifying Powder) and Shan Yao Wan (Dioscorea Pill), which will produce immediate results.
Poem:
Vision is hazy and distant objects are unclear;
No redness or pain, the black pupil remains clear.
Lower body cold, Liver deficient, Yuan Qi depleted,
Various flower-like shapes appear before the eyes.
At this time, decline sexual activities;
Pause work in calligraphy, painting, and tailoring.
This is not a forced interpretation by physicians,
But follows the regulations set by ancient sages.
Sometimes one object is seen as two,
The mind is filled with delusions and fright.
Urgently take Che Qian Wan and its powder,
To prevent eventual progression to Qing Mang.
Bu Gan San (Liver-Tonifying Powder)
Ingredients: Ling Yang Jiao (Antelope Horn), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root) (each 2 liang); Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed), Ren Shen (Ginseng), Fu Ling (Poria), Xi Xin (Asarum), Hei Shen (Black Ginseng), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) (each 3.5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Take 1 qian after meals, mixed with rice water.
Shan Yao Wan (Dioscorea Pill)
Ingredients: Gan Shan Yao (Dried Dioscorea Rhizome), Gan Di Huang (Dried Rehmannia Root), Ren Shen (Ginseng), Fu Ling (Poria), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome) (each 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 10 pills on an empty stomach with tea.
Second Condition: When this eye disease first occurs, it suddenly manifests with redness, tearing, and the formation of membranes. These symptoms may subside, gather, or disperse. The condition is mild initially, but if it persists for one or two years and gradually worsens, it leads to blood stasis obscuring the eyes. Praying to spirits or ghosts is useless; this disease is caused by Liver labor and heat, where toxic wind enters the brain and eyes. Upon feeling ill, use eye drops for care; do not apply moxibustion or cauterization to the head and face. One can take Xie Gan Tang (Liver-Draining Decoction), Qing Xiang Zi Wan (Celosia Seed Pill), and apply Zhu Sha Jian (Cinnabar Fritillary) to the eyes for immediate results.
Poem:
Labor and mental strain bring redness and pain;
The pupil fears light, tears hard to open.
Sometimes it flares up, sometimes it subsides;
Resentful ghosts and seeking gods become the root of disaster.
Suddenly membranes appear, yet it is still manageable;
Know that it is the expulsion of Heat from the Liver and Diaphragm.
Urgently seek decoctions to remove the cause first;
Do not let the root remain within the Zang Organs.
When one eye first becomes diseased,
Do not let the other eye deviate from the pattern.
If passed lightly this year,
Next year it should turn dangerous repeatedly.
Qing Xiang Zi pills must be taken;
Bilean (scalpel) and double eyelids involve blood connection;
Apply Cinnabar medicine to the eyes;
Only avoid cauterizing the head, and it will be easy to cure.
Xie Gan Tang (Liver-Draining Decoction)
Ingredients: Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Mang Xiao (Mirabilite) (each 1 liang); Jie Geng (Platycodon Root) (1 liang).

Zhu Sha Jian (Cinnabar Fritillary)
