This condition, at its initial onset, presents with sudden redness and dryness of the eyes, tearing, pain, and itching. The symptoms extend to the area around the pupil (Yinbai), and the cornea gradually develops nebulae (cloudy opacities). A red membrane droops down, directly covering the eyeball. This obstruction resembles the color of clouds and rosy mist.
The most suitable treatment is to use a sickle to wash out and release blood, followed by moxibustion and cauterization before and after, applying Qingliang Jian (Cooling Decoction) as eye drops, and administering Lingyangjiao Yinzi (Antelope Horn Decoction), which will lead to recovery.
The poem states:
The cornea is covered from above downwards; it is known that the Zang-Fu organs have been invaded by pathogenic factors. Heat qi attacks upward, causing stagnation within the Liver; the eyeball is covered like clouds and rosy mist.
Stasis in the upper eyelid must be completely removed; the efficacy of the decoction in promoting circulation is not inferior. After a brief pause, apply cooling medicines again; other herbs may be added or subtracted according to circumstances.
Qingliang Jian (Cooling Decoction)
Nao (Borneol), Ni Fen (Calomel), Ma Ya Xiao (Sodium Nitrate), Qin Pi (Cortex Fraxini) (each 1 liang), Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis) (each 3 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into powder and refine them to an extremely fine consistency. Soak the herbs in two bowls of water for two days, then decoct to obtain two large cups of liquid. Filter out the dregs, boil for three to five more boils, and store in a lidded porcelain container. Add Borneol separately and mix well.
Seal tightly to prevent dust entry. Apply to the eyes when used, with immediate effect.
Lingyangjiao Yinzi (Antelope Horn Decoction)
Ling Yang Jiao (Cornu Saigae Tataricae) (1 liang 5 qian), Huang Qi (Radix Astragali) (2 liang), Chong Wei Zi (Fructus Viticis Exaltatae) (2 liang), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), Tian Men Dong (Radix Asparagi), Hei Shen (Radix Panacis Nigrifoliae), Zhi Mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Jie Geng (Radix Platycodonis) (each 1 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Take one qian of the powder with one cup of water, decoct until half a cup remains, remove the dregs, and take warm after meals.
At the initial stage of this condition, red vessels gradually appear from the upper region and rush onto the eyeball. This is caused by heat accumulation in the San Jiao (Triple Burner) attacking the Liver and Diaphragm, leading to heat stagnation. If treatment is delayed even slightly, it may damage the eyes later. It is appropriate to administer Xijiao Yinzi (Rhinoceros Horn Decoction), followed by applying Moyi Gao (Nebula-Rubbing Ointment), which will lead to recovery.
The poem states:
With deep-rooted red vessels, one naturally feels a gradual rushing sensation from the inner canthus. Heat accumulation in the San Jiao becomes a disaster; to treat it, first ensure the decoction promotes flow.
For floating and large pulses, hook-cutting and cauterization are necessary; frequent medication application will resolve it. Avoid sour, salty, and hot foods, and abstain from sexual intercourse; be cautious as if following a master's precepts.
Xijiao Yinzi (Rhinoceros Horn Decoction)
Xi Jiao (Horn Rhinocerotis), Ling Yang Jiao (Cornu Saigae Tataricae), Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Fu Ling (Poria), Zhi Mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae) (each 1 liang), Jie Geng (Radix Platycodonis), Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) (each 2 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Take one qian of the powder with one cup of water, decoct until half a cup remains, remove the dregs, and take warm after meals.
Moyi Gao (Nebula-Rubbing Ointment)
Shi Jue Ming (Concha Haliotidis), Shui Jing (Quartz), Zhu Sha (Cinnabar), Nao (Borneol), Zhen Zhu Mo (Margarita Pulvis) (each 1 fen), Hu Po (Amber) (2 fen).
Grind the above ingredients into powder, refining them to a flour-like consistency. Then add Su You (Butyrum) to form an ointment. Apply to the eyes every night after dark, with immediate effect.
