This text discusses two types of pediatric eye disorders: strabismus (Tongjing) and measles/chickenpox affecting the eyes.
The first condition is "Pediatric Strabismus with External Obstruction." When the eye disease initially occurs, it is usually caused by accidental blows to the head, face, or temples, or by falling and being crushed. This causes the child's Liver to be affected by Wind-stroke due to fright, leading to strabismus (eyes turning inward). It is appropriate to administer Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill), Xijiao Yinzi (Rhinoceros Horn Decoction), and Tongding Shinan San (Top-Penetrating Shinan Powder), which yield immediate results.
The poem states:
When a child suffers from strabismus,
They wish to look west but end up looking east.
Vibration in the brain causes the eyeballs to turn abnormally;
This indicates the Liver has been affected by internal Wind-stroke due to fright.
Frequently grind and take Calculus Bovis and Rhinoceros Horn;
Grind Shinan Herb finely and insufflate into the nose.
The nursing mother must observe dietary restrictions;
After several days, the original appearance will be restored.
[Niuhuang Wan / Calculus Bovis Pill]
Ingredients: Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang), Bai Fuzi (Aconitum Kusnezoffii Radix Praeparatum), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), Ganxie (Dry Scorpion), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 1 fen); Baimangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (2 fen); Huoxiang (Agastache Rugosa Herba) (5 qian); Zhusha (Cinnabar), Shexiang (Moschus) (each a small amount).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take three pills before sleep, washed down with Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction). The nursing mother should avoid damp-heat inducing foods, wheat products, and pork. Children may also dissolve and take the powder.
[Xijiao Yinzi / Rhinoceros Horn Decoction]
Ingredients: Xijiao (Rhinoceros Cornu) (1 liang); Shegan (Belamcanda Rhizome), Caolongdan (Gentiana Scabra Root) (each 5 qian); Gouteng (Uncaria Rhynchophylla Ramulus cum Uncis), Huangqin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root) (each 5 fen); Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (2 liang); Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 1 fen); Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) (2 fen).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Take one qian of the powder with one cup of water, decoct until reduced to half a cup. Strain and take warm after meals.
[Tongding Shinan San / Top-Penetrating Shinan Powder]
Ingredients: Shinan Ye (Rhododendri Daurici Folium) (1 liang); Lilvhuang (Veratrum Nigrum Rhizome) (3 fen); Gudia (Cucumis Melo Seed) (5-7 pieces).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Use an amount roughly the size of a rice grain each time, twice daily. The effect is optimal when the medicinal power penetrates to the top of the head.
The second condition is "Measles/Chickenpox Affecting the Eyes with External Obstruction." This eye disorder affects children regardless of age, provided they have previously suffered from measles or chickenpox (Banchuang). During the eruption of the sores, if one feels the pathogen entering the eyes, rest and strict dietary/lifestyle precautions are necessary immediately. If dietary restrictions and care are not observed, pain, tearing, redness, dryness, photophobia (difficulty opening eyes), swelling, and hardness will occur. An opacity resembling silver color may appear. This is due to Heat-Fire residing in the Liver, rushing upward into the eyes, causing stagnation and toxicity in the Liver and Diaphragm, resulting in visual obstruction. It is suitable to wash the eyes with Qinpi Tang (Eucommia Bark Decoction), followed by taking Lianggan Wan (Cool-Liver Pill). One should not use a sickle-like tool to clean out blood, nor apply drops or pick at the eyes, as this may damage the eye. Once the pain subsides, apply opacities-resolving drops.
The poem states:
Every child must inevitably suffer from measles/chickenpox in their lifetime.
Heat-Fire penetrates the Liver and rushes to the upper eyelid;
Difficulty opening eyes, swelling, hardness, and photophobia prevail.
Eye pain and opacities appearing like silver;
Do not forcibly touch with hands, lest crying causes rupture.
Protect diligently according to the timing.
Frequently wash with Eucommia Bark decoction;
Medication should induce slight sweating.
If the patient follows this prescription,
They will enjoy clear vision for life.
[Qinpi Tang / Eucommia Bark Decoction]
Ingredients: Qinpi (Eucommiae Cortex) (2 liang); Qinjiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Radix), Xixin (Asarum Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 1 liang); Gancao (Licorice Root) (5 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Take one qian of the powder with one cup of water, boil for three to five boils. Wash the eyes while hot for immediate effect.
[Lianggan Wan / Cool-Liver Pill]
Ingredients: Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (2 liang); Huangqin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root), Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus), Heishen (Polygoni Multiflori Radix Preparata), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (each 1 liang); Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria) (each 1.5 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take ten pills on an empty stomach, washed down with tea.
