This text describes two types of pediatric eye disorders.
The first is "External Obstruction with Proliferation in the Eyelid of Children" (Xiao'er Jianzhong Shengzhui Waizhang). At the initial stage, this condition arises from heat accumulation and stagnation in the Spleen and Stomach rising to the eyelids, causing fleshy growths. Initially small as hemp seeds, over three to five years they grow larger, eventually rubbing against and obscuring the pupil, accompanied by redness, dryness, and tearing. Treatment requires hooking and cutting to remove blood stasis, followed by moxibustion or cautery. Internally, it is appropriate to take Souwei San (Stomach-Searching Powder) and Bugan Wan (Liver-Nourishing Pill), and externally apply Zengqing Gao (Azurite Ointment), which yields immediate results.
Poem:
Though proliferations in children's eyelids are rare, physicians must know them first.
Initially small as a hemp seed, day by day it grows longer, hanging down like a bean or pearl.
Cutting and cauterizing are necessary to drain blood stasis; one must carefully consider the decoctions and pills.
If encountering noble and delicate children, applying medicine requires miraculous and unique prescriptions.
Souwei San (Stomach-Searching Powder)
Ingredients: Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Heishen (Ginseng Radix Rubra), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (equal parts).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into powder. Take one qian of the powder with one cup of water, boil until reduced to half a cup, strain, and take warm after meals.
Bugan Wan (Liver-Nourishing Pill)
Ingredients: Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Ben (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (each 1 liang), Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus) (2 liang), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (each 1.5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take ten pills on an empty stomach with tea.
Zengqing Gao (Azurite Ointment)
Ingredients: Zengqing (Azurite) (1 liang), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum) (a small amount), Zhusha (Cinnabaris), Runtouxiang (Olibanum), Hupo (Electrum), Zhenzhu (Margarita) (each 1 fen).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, as smooth as flour. Mix with butter/ghee to form an ointment. Apply to the eyes every night after dark.
The second type is "External Obstruction due to Malnutrition Eye Disease in Children" (Xiao'er Gan Yan Waizhang). At the onset, this is often caused by heat in the brain, sores on the head, prolonged duration of Nyctalopia (Que Mu), or hidden effects from diarrhea and dysentery. Symptoms include pain, tearing, difficulty opening the eyes, heat in the chest/diaphragm area, and invasion of Liver Wind. Initially, there is intermittent itching and dryness. The child may bite eyebrows, scratch nails, and rub the nose, leading to the formation of corneal opacities (Yi). Manifestations include redness, swelling, pain, tearing, difficulty opening eyes, stiffness in the diaphragm, white membranes covering the entire eye, photophobia, lying face down, and reluctance to lift the head. This disease should not be treated with cauterization on the head and face, as it may damage the eyes. It is especially contraindicated to arbitrarily apply eye drops. It is appropriate to take Shagan San (Malnutrition-Eliminating Powder) and Tuiyi Wan (Opacity-Removing Pill), which yield immediate results.
Poem:
Where does childhood malnutrition eye disease come from? Brain heat and Liver wind bring disaster.
Perhaps due to diarrhea and dysentery secretly affecting the upper body, or prolonged nyctalopia acting as a medium.
Initially, frequent closing of eyes with itching and dryness; deep illness brings opacities, swelling, and difficulty opening.
Hands scratching hair and rubbing the nose, afraid of light, head not lifted.
Inept measures lead to cauterization of the head and face, suffering pain in vain, truly lamentable.
Quacks do not understand, lightly applying drops, piercing wound scars causes discomfort.
Want to know the path to recovery? Medication clears it like wind rolling away fog.
Shagan San (Malnutrition-Eliminating Powder)
Ingredients: Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum), Muli (Concha Ostreae) (each 2 liang), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Each morning on an empty stomach, take one qian mixed with rice soup.
Tuiyi Wan (Opacity-Removing Pill)
Ingredients: Heishen (Ginseng Radix Rubra), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Fuling (Poria), Shijueming (Concha Arcae), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) (each 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take ten pills on an empty stomach with tea.
