[Chapter 44: External Obstruction of Inverted Cilia and Curled Eyelashes]
At the initial stage of this eye disease, it is caused by heat accumulating in the Liver (Gan) and wind deficiency in the diaphragm. This leads to excessive tearing, itching or pain, and fluctuating symptoms that improve and worsen intermittently. Rubbing the eyes with hands causes the eyelashes to invert and curl, piercing and hiding behind the pupil.
A gritty sensation occurs on the eyeball surface, covered by a white membrane. It is contraindicated to use a lancet for bleeding or cauterization, as this may cause the eyelids to shrink and tighten, making opening and closing difficult. Subsequently, it is advisable to administer Xixin San (Asarum Powder) and Bushen Wan (Kidney-Nourishing Pill), which yield immediate effects.
Poem says:
If wind-heat causes redness and continuous tears,
Opacity grows slowly, filling the vision greenish-black.
Fluctuating symptoms persist for years,
Eyelids shrink tight, hard to open.
Inverted cilia curl like thorns causing grittiness,
Rubbing against the pupil, how can one be at ease?
The physician removes the hair root permanently,
Needling blood from Taiyang (Bladder Meridian) is paramount.
Decoctions eliminate wind and heat,
Pili lance repeatedly applies vermilion decoction.
Xixin San (Asarum Powder)
Ingredients: Asari Radix (Xixin), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Vernoniae Semen (Chongweizi) (each 2 liang); Black Ginseng (Heishen), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Rheum Palmatum Rhizoma et Radix (Dahuang), Antelopis Cornu (Lingyangjiao) (each 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Take 1 qian of the powder, add 1 sheng of water, boil down to 0.5 sheng. Strain and take warm after meals.
Bushen Wan (Kidney-Nourishing Pill)
Ingredients: Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Alisma Rhizoma (Zexie), Dioscoreae Rhizoma Dryum (Ganshanyao), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi), Poria (Fuling), Asari Radix (Xixin), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) (each 1 liang); Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shengdihuang) (3 fen).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 10 pills per dose, swallowed with tea infusion on an empty stomach.
[Chapter 45: External Obstruction of Wind-Induced Ectropion]
At the onset of this eye condition, symptoms fluctuate without fixed timing. It is often due to continuous tearing, generally caused by wind invading the Stomach Qi, accumulation of heat in the Liver and Diaphragm, and toxic stagnation in the eyelids, all leading to the eversion of the eyelid.
It is essential to use a lancet to drain stasis and perform cauterization three to five times. Then, administer Huangqi Tang (Astragalus Decoction), massage with Mofeng Gao (Wind-Massaging Ointment). Applying Bailian Gao (Ampelopsis Ointment) inside the eyelid will lead to recovery.
Poem says:
Generally, wind-heat enters both eyes,
Why does this eye suffer differently?
Toxic wind of the Spleen causes eyelid eversion,
Kidney transmission turns it into a pearl.
If only eyelid eversion, treatment is easy;
Once toxic wind enters the black part, it is hard to remove.
Lightly cauterize with a copper comb, apply wind-massaging medicine,
Apply Ampelopsis ointment inside the eyelid.
