The third month of pregnancy is called "Shi Bao" (Beginning of the Fetal Sac). At this time, the fetus has not yet formed a fixed shape and transforms according to what it sees. If one wishes for a boy, one may handle bows and arrows; if one wishes for a girl, one may play with pearls and gems. To desire a virtuous child skilled in discussing poetry and books, [the mother] should frequently discuss poetry and books. To desire a dignified and serious child, [the mother] should speak upright words and perform upright deeds. This is the principle of external images influencing internal感应 (sensation/resonance). During this month, the Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture or moxibustion on this meridian is contraindicated. The Pericardium connects to the Heart. One should avoid sorrow, excessive thinking, or fright, lest these emotions disturb the qi of this month, as excessive Fire in the Heart Meridian easily leads to miscarriage. If vomiting persists and food intake is reduced, Yi Qing Wan (Suppressing Blue Pill) is indicated. (It must be started before the completion of the third month).
Yi Qing Wan (Suppressing Blue Pill)

Grind into powder, bind with rice paste into pills the size of mung beans. Take 3-4 fen per dose, gradually increasing to 7-8 fen, taken down with decoction prepared from Ban Xia Tang (see above).
In the fourth month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Water to form blood vessels. The diet should include rice and fish, which is said to promote abundant Qi and Blood, to unblock the ears and eyes, and to circulate through the meridians. During this month, the San Jiao Meridian of Hand-Shaoyang nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture or moxibustion on this meridian is contraindicated. Internally connecting to the San Jiao, at this stage the fetus's Six Fu Organs are smoothly formed. One should keep the body quiet and the mind harmonious, and regulate the diet. If there is fatigue with restlessness, bitter taste in the mouth, headache, weakness in the legs, or edema, An Tai He Qi San (Pill for Calming the Fetus and Harmonizing Qi) should be administered urgently.

In the fifth month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Fire to form its Qi. Sleep should begin late; bathing and washing clothes should be done; living quarters should be deep/secluded, and clothing thick. The diet should include rice and millet, and broths of cattle and sheep, with the five flavors balanced. This is called nourishing Qi to stabilize the Five Zang Organs. During this month, the Spleen Meridian of Foot-Taiyin nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture or moxibustion on this meridian is contraindicated. At this stage, the fetus's four limbs are fully formed. One should avoid extreme hunger or fullness, avoid dry and roasted/hot foods, and avoid excessive labor. If the fetal growth causes abdominal heaviness and restlessness during sleep, Yang Tai Yin (Decoction for Nourishing the Fetus) is indicated.
