The fontanelle of an infant forms a pit, termed "Fontanel Depression" (Xian Xian). This occurs due to heat within the Zang-Fu organs, causing irritability, thirst, and excessive drinking, which leads to diarrhea. Consequently, Qi and Blood become deficient and fail to ascend to nourish the brain marrow, resulting in the fontanelle being sunken like a pit and unable to fill flatly. It is appropriate to use the skull of a yellow dog, roasted until charred and ground into powder, mixed with egg white for topical application.
Failure of hair growth in infants is due to insufficient congenital Qi and Blood, which cannot nourish the hair. It is appropriate to use Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gan Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Rou Cong Rong (Cistanches Herba), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) each at 1 liang, and Hu Fen (Cerussa) at 5 qian. These are ground into powder, formed into pills the size of millet seeds using honey, taken with Black Bean Decoction (ten pills per dose). Externally, 20-30 pills are ground with liquid and applied to the scalp to promote hair growth.
Failure of teeth eruption in infants is because teeth are the culmination of bones, nourished by marrow. Insufficient congenital Qi fails to充盈 (fill) the marrow, thus teeth do not erupt for a long time. It is appropriate to use Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Gan Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) each at 1 liang, Chen Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) at 5 qian, and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) at 3 qian. Ground into powder, take 5 fen mixed with warm water. Externally, apply the powder directly to the gums and rub with fingers, twice daily.
Infantile weakness of the head and neck indicates the collapse of the Tian Zhu Gu (Tianzhu Bone, referring to the upper cervical spine). It is appropriate to use Bai Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus) (remove head, feet, and hairs, stir-fried), ground into powder. Take 5 fen per dose, mixed with Bo He Tang (Menthae Haplocalycis Decoction), three times daily. Externally, use 3 Mu Bie Zi (Strychni Semen) and 30 Bi Ma Zi (Ricini Semen), all shelled and ground evenly. First, hold the infant's head and massage the neck until warm, then apply the paste.
Infantile oral weakness and inability to speak result from maternal fright during pregnancy, where Fright Qi invades the Xin Bao Luo (Pericardium Collateral), causing instability of the infant's Shen (Spirit) and obstruction of the tongue root. It is appropriate to use Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (remove heart), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix) (processed), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 2 qian), Ru Xiang (Olibanum) (de-oiled), and Chen Sha (Cinnabar) (water-ground, each 1 qian). Ground into powder, form pills the size of hemp seeds using honey, taken with Mi Yin (Rice Drink, ten pills per dose), three times daily. If the child cannot speak by age three, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) (formula see under Foot Weakness section below) should be used, adding Lu Rong (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum) and Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) to form pills for administration.
Infantile hand weakness refers to lack of strength in the hands, preventing movement. It is appropriate to use Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) each at 5 qian. Ground into powder, form pills the size of Euryales Semen using honey, dissolved in Jing Jie Tang (Schizonepetae Decoction) for administration.
