Postpartum headache is mostly caused by blood deficiency. The symptoms present as lighter in the morning and heavier at night, with pain occurring intermittently. Although pain may occur at the vertex (the top of the head where the Taiyang meridian travels), the supraorbital ridge does not hurt. It should not be treated as an external contraction. The appropriate treatment is Xiongui Tang (Cnidium and Angelica Decoction) added with Jingjie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike, 2 qian), or Yulu San (Jade Dew Powder). If the headache is due to wind-cold, there are no intervals of relief, and the supraorbital ridge also hurts. Although it belongs to wind-cold syndrome, the appropriate treatment is Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, 1 qian). If convulsions of the hands and feet, teeth grinding, headache accompanied by dizziness and fainting occur, urgent treatment is especially required. First, administer Jiajian Siwu Tang (Modified Four Substances Decoction), followed by Qinjiao Tang (Gentiana Macrophylla Decoction). If headache is accompanied by vomiting and inability to eat, this indicates fire flaming upward due to blood deficiency. It is appropriate to use Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, heart removed) and Juhong (Pomelo Peel, red part) decocted in water for administration. If vomiting stops but the headache persists, add Tiandong (Asparagus Tuber, heart removed).
