At the beginning of pregnancy, the meridians close internally to nurture and sustain the fetal origin. The qi of the stomach and intestines becomes obstructed and stagnant, dispersing into the upper jiao (upper burner) and diaphragm. Rebellious qi rushes upward, causing food and drink to be vomited immediately upon ingestion. This occurs because the meridians of the uterus connect to the opening of the stomach.
When the scent of food triggers the uprising of essence and qi, one develops an aversion to smelling food, a preference for sour and salty tastes, fatigue in the four limbs, a tendency to sleep much and rise little, and a general state of listlessness and lassitude. This condition is called Ezu (Morning Sickness/Nausea of Pregnancy) (commonly referred to as "sick with child"). For mild cases, simply providing whatever food the patient desires, allowing them to eat at will, will lead to recovery. For severe cases, Wufu Tang (Wu Yao and Aconite Decoction) is appropriate. If phlegm and water are vomited, Shanju Tang (Ginseng and Tangerine Peel Decoction) is indicated. If the spleen and stomach are weak, Yigong San (Yi Gong Powder) is suitable. If phlegm-saliva is abundant and obstructive, Banxia Fuling Tang (Pinellia and Poria Decoction) should be used. If clear fluid is vomited accompanied by aversion to cold and fever, Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) is appropriate. Alternatively, if the body is obese and Ezu is present, phlegm-dampness is likely excessive; Jiawei Liujun Tang (Modified Six Gentlemen Decoction) is recommended. If the body is thin and Ezu is present, fire-heat is likely abundant; Jiawei Wendan Tang (Modified Warm Gallbladder Decoction) is recommended. If food stagnation causes distension and fullness in the chest and epigastrium, Hezhong Yin (Harmonize the Middle Drink) is suitable. If there is distension and fullness in the chest and back, Qinlian Banxia Tang (Scutellaria, Coptis, and Pinellia Decoction) is indicated. If there is abdominal pain, Hewei Yin (Harmonize the Stomach Drink) is appropriate. If violent anger causes rebellious qi, forcing fetal qi upward and resulting in vomiting, Jiegan Jian (Liver-Relieving Decoction) should be used.
