The flesh at the root of the infant's tongue swells and protrudes in layers, appearing short and resembling a tongue; this condition is named Chong She (Double Tongue). It is appropriate to soak Huangbai End (Phellodendron Bark Powder) in Kuzhuli (Bamboo Sap from Bitter Bamboo) and apply it to the tongue, which will resolve the swelling. If ineffective, Puhuang End (Polygonatum Pollen Powder) may be sprinkled on it.
The tip of the infant's tongue swells and fills the mouth, or becomes stiff like wood and unable to move; this condition is named Mu She (Wood Tongue). It is appropriate to decoct Bohe Ye (Mint Leaf) and Xi Cha Ye (Fine Tea Leaf) together, leave them exposed overnight, wrap the mixture in a blue silk cloth around a chopstick, and use it to dab the medicine onto the affected area. Alternatively, remove the shell from Bimazi (Castor Seed), take the flesh, pound it into a paste, dip a paper twist into the oil extracted from castor seeds, ignite it, extinguish the flame, and smoke the affected area with the smoke until the swelling subsides. If there are protrusions under the tongue resembling Lougu (Ants) or Wo Can (Cocoon-like swellings), urgently pierce the swollen protrusion with a Bian Stone (Lithotherapeutic Tool) to release blood, then apply Fudi Mo (Soot from Cauldron Bottom) mixed with salt and vinegar, or mixed with Jinghua Shui (Well Water drawn at dawn), or simply brush on Puhuang End (Polygonatum Pollen Powder); the swelling will naturally recede.
The infant extends the tongue, moving it back and forth like a snake; this condition is named Nong She (Playing Tongue). The tongue is the sprout of the Heart; when the Heart is tranquil, the tongue is still; when the Heart is disturbed, the tongue moves chaotically. Heat accumulated in the Heart and Spleen causes Playing Tongue. For mild cases, Dengxin Cao (Juncus Effusus Decoction) should be taken as a soup; for severe cases, Huanglian Tang (Coptis Decoction) should be given frequently.
Infantile night crying that does not cease has four causes: Cold, Heat, Fright, and Stagnation. In Cold patterns, the Spleen Qi is deficient and cold, with Yin flourishing at night, causing abdominal pain, cyanotic complexion, cold hands and feet, crying while bending the waist, and loss of appetite for milk; Gouteng Yin (Uncaria Decoction) is appropriate. In Heat patterns, Heart Fire causes irritability, red face, reddish urine, hot mouth, and warm abdomen, with crying while lying on the back, improving upon seeing lamp light; for severe cases, Shengmai San (Generate the Pulse Powder) is appropriate (see the section on Frightful Crying after the formulas). In Stagnation patterns, excessive feeding leads to food stagnation and pain; if there is excess pathogenic factor without deficiency and the abdomen rejects pressure, Xiaoshi Wan (Digestive Pill) is appropriate. If crying occurs due to diarrhea and refusal to nurse, it indicates Spleen-Stomach Deficiency; Liushen San (Six Deities Powder) is appropriate. If vomiting and diarrhea alternate with refusal to nurse, it indicates Spleen-Stomach Deficient Cold; Wu Junzi Jian (Five Gentlemen Decoction) is appropriate. If undigested stool, poor intake, abdominal distension, and crying occur, it indicates Spleen Qi Deficiency; Wuyi Yigong San (Five Ingredients Extraordinary Merit Powder) is appropriate.
