It presents with internal Heat, swelling, and pain; treatment involves external application of poultices and internal administration of herbs that dispel Wind and clear Fire.
Main Formula: Used for Wind-Heat attacking upward, causing swelling and pain in the face and eyes, and stiffness of the jaw.
Ingredients: Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma) (each 2.5 qian), Danggui Radix (Danggui) (1.5 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (1 qian), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Puerariae Radix (Gegen), Cardamomi Fructus Rotundus (Caodoukou), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix (Ben), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo) (each 4 fen), Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi), Bombyx Batryticatus (Jiangcan) (each 3 fen), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang) (7 fen). External Poultice: Indigo naturalis (Dianqing), Earthworm soil (Qiu Yin Ni) (ground with water), Well-bottom mud. Select any one of these and apply to the affected area.
The syndrome arises from sorrow, overthinking, fright, sadness, or the ingestion of drugs with excessive Heat-Toxin properties. Initially, there is dull pain connecting to the neck, a small lump inside that gradually enlarges, swelling and pain of the gums, alternating chills and fever, and after ulceration, profuse discharge of pus and rotting tissue. The lesion may be on the left or right side, with inability to open the mouth and difficulty in eating. Initially, it is appropriate to use a goose feather dipped in raw Tung oil to induce vomiting, thereby expelling much Phlegm-Heat. Knife and needle incisions are strictly contraindicated. Once ulcerated, exposure to Wind must be avoided, as it often leads to death.
Main Formula: (Suitable to be taken consecutively with Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin) Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (equal parts), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma) (half dose). Decoct these ingredients in water and take orally.
The syndrome results from anger, depression, fright, and accumulated resentment. It belongs to the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian. In the early stage, moxibustion with garlic partitioning should be applied with many moxa cones. Internally, administer Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin added with Xuanshen and Jiegeng.
For robust individuals, employ purgative methods; for the elderly and weak, use tonification and support methods. For those with mental fatigue and frequent anger, with swollen and hard neck and neck, use Ba Zhen Tang added with Chaihu and Xiangfu. For those who overwork their mind, Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang is suitable.

For robust individuals, use purgatives; if treatment is delayed and missed, perforation into the throat leads to death.

In severe cases, treat according to the method for Brain Abscess (Nao Yong); in mild cases, take seven fresh white eggplant stems (Qie Di), weighed equally against fresh Polygoni Multiflori Radix Preparata (He Shou Wu), add half a zhong of water, decoct, and drink. If pus is discharged, take one more dose to close the wound. If fresh materials are unavailable, dried ones may also be used.
