When the pulse of the Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin (Shoujueyin Xinbao Jing, 手厥阴心包经) moves vigorously, it results in palpitations and violent beating of the heart. The collateral vessel of the Stomach is named Xuli (虚里, Epigastric Pulse Point), which penetrates the diaphragm, connects with the Lungs, and emerges below the left breast; its pulsation can shake the clothing. If there is deficiency accompanied by phlegm, pulsation occurs; followed by a burst of heat after a short while, this characterizes the pulse manifestation of Zhengchong (怔忡, Palpitation). The above describes the pulse of Zhengchong.
The pulse of Jingji (惊悸, Fright and Palpitation) must present as Jiedai Mai (结代脉, Intermittent Pulse), where the Cun Kou (寸口, Radial Artery at the wrist) pulse appears both moving and weak. "Moving" indicates Fright, while "weak" indicates Palpitation. The pathology resides in the Heart and Gallbladder, and the pulse must appear large and agitated. In cases of Fright, the pulse stops and then resumes; the patient's eyes do not rotate freely, and they are unable to exhale fully. The above describes the pulse of Fright.
Fear causes the pulse to sink, as Fear injures the Kidney Qi, resulting in a sinking pulse. The person feels terrified, and the pulse shape resembles feeling along a silk thread, continuous yet fine and soft; the complexion is pale, indicating depletion of Qi and Blood. The above describes the pulse of Fear.
