The four limbs feel cold. By evening, there is mental restlessness and fatigue. At this time, add a small amount of salt and decoct together. This may be Cold Damage (Shanghan) affecting the Yin meridians, with cold reversal in the hands and feet. Or there may be fright from deficiency during sleep, and continuous sweating from deficiency. The pulse is fine and rapid, the complexion is bluish, and there is vomiting with counterflow qi. In such cases, it is more appropriate to add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) for simultaneous decoction. The dosage adjustments depend on the specific situation at hand.
(Pili San) (Formula 22) Treats excessive Yin qi blocking Yang qi, characterized by irritability without desire to drink water.
One and a half taels of Pao Shu Fuzi (Prepared Aconite), taken out after being thoroughly processed, baked in cold ash until dry, with skin and umbilicus removed, then ground into coarse powder. One large qian of Zhen La Cha (True Lapsang Souchong Tea), finely ground and mixed evenly with the Fuzi powder. Divide into two doses. For each dose, use one zhan of water, decoct until six-tenths remains. Just before completion, add half a spoonful of honey. Allow to cool to warm temperature and take. Shortly thereafter, irritability ceases, sleep is achieved, and upon sweating, the disease resolves.
(Huoyan San) (Formula 23) Treats severe adverse conditions in Cold Damage.
Bo Shang Liu Huang (Imported Sulphur), Hei Fuzi (Black Aconite, peeled and used raw), Xin La Cha (New Year's Wax Tea) (each one tael, ground into fine powder).
First, mix the medicine with one sheng of good wine, dividing it into five large new bowls. Place on fire and swirl until the liquid evaporates to dryness. Cover with tiles. Under each bowl, burn a fist-sized piece of cooked Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium). Cover with tile, ensuring no direct flame touches the bowl. Continue until smoke dissipates. Scrape off the residue when cooled, grind finely again, and store in a porcelain container. Take two qian per dose, with one zhan of wine, decocting together until seven-tenths remains. Flames may rise; do not be alarmed. For Yin Du (Yin Toxin) Cold Damage, symptoms include cold limbs, deep and fine pulse, vomiting or diarrhea, heat and irritability in the five centers (palms, soles, and chest), and hardness/knotting in the chest. Or if Fu Yang (Hidden Yang) turns inward, preventing swallowing of soup or water, or absence of pulse. Take one dose first. If vomiting occurs, administer another dose. Subsequently, warmth in the heart indicates recovery. If pathogens have penetrated to the zang-fu organs while the exterior syndrome remains unresolved, presenting with high fever and surging-large pulse, immediately use exterior-releasing medicines. If the exterior is resolved, fever subsides, sleep is obtained, and general sweating occurs, then Tiao Qi Tang San can be used. If two doses of this medicine yield no effect, the condition is considered untreatable.
(Dansha Wan) (Formula 24) Treats critical and malignant manifestations where Yin and Yang Er Du (Two Poisons) of Cold Damage are mutually latent.
Bo Shang Liu Huang (Imported Sulphur), Shui Yin (Mercury), Tai Yin Shi (Taiyin Stone), Tai Yang Shi (Taiyang Stone), Xuan Jing Shi (Xuanjing Stone) (each one tael, ground), Xiao Shi (Niter/Saltpeter) (half tael).
Grind all ingredients into powder. Use an oil-free dingzi (small cauldron), apply moderate heat, add the powders, and stir until uniform and grayish. Grind until fine as flour.
Soak Zheng Bing (Steamed Bread Dough) in fresh Ginger Juice to form pills, sized like mung beans. Take five pills per dose, administered with Long Nao (Borneol), Niu Huang (Calculus Bovis), Ginger juice, and Honey Water to suppress irritability. For Yang Du (Yang Toxin), administer with Jujube Decoction. For Yin Du (Yin Toxin), administer with Ren Tang (Perilla Leaf Decoction). Do not process in damp or dark places.
