Grass, trees, wind, Suixing (Jupiter), hair-bearing animals (mammals), thunder, and lightning all correspond to the Wood element.
The category of the East is governed by Jueyin (Liver meridian/Wind qi). In the four seasons, it governs Spring; its transformation governs the First Qi (from Great Cold to Spring Equinox); in the Eight Trigrams, it is Zhen; in the Nine Palaces, it is the Third Palace; in the heavens, it corresponds to Suixing (Jupiter); the heavenly transformation manifests as Wind, with a climate that is warm and mild. The transformation of insects produces hair-bearing animals, such as lions and Qilin (mythical horned beasts). Products of the earth have a sour taste and green color. Earthly products correspond to heavenly stars and wind omens: during auspicious times, following the season reveals auspicious signs; during inauspicious times, following the season reveals ominous signs; during auspicious times, following the season reveals auspicious signs. All these Eastern things correspond to the Wood element, i.e., Wind-Wood and the warm and mild climate of Spring.

When wind spreads and all things begin to grow, the sky becomes dim, great winds break and pull apart, and the distant climate appears as pale yellow dust; the four seasonal energies display blue misty radiance, fragrant flowers flourish and become lush. Their productive transformation has a sour taste, vitality is vigorous, and grass and trees thrive. If the Heavenly Main Qi is excessive, wind prevails alone, rain nourishment is deficient, Earth qi follows Wood qi, Wood does not control Earth, Earth fails to transform into Rain Qi which is suppressed by strong wind. Thus, heavy wind accompanies rain, representing mutual overcoming. If the Qi matches Heavenly Virtue, Suixing (Jupiter) is bright and prosperous, blue misty radiance often appears, pale qi is visible from afar, hair-bearing animals transform, meaning rare beasts appear together auspiciously, earth produces Lingzhi (spiritual mushroom), forests grow strange trees, wild areas have famous herbs, all combining with Wood Virtue.

The correct energy of the East is Spring, without killing commands, harmonious qi frequently unfolds, flowers bloom charmingly. Thunder strikes in mid-spring, lightning flashes, rainbows appear according to time. Following it brings prosperity to all transformations; opposing it brings disaster. Days and hours belong to Jia and Yi, trigrams include Zhen and Xun. If Suixing (Jupiter) loses its degree, the year suffers great famine, people suffer many diseases. Observing Suixing (Jupiter): if small, people's disaster arrives; if large, the ruler is sage, the state is safe, people have blessings, celebrating harmony with the star's moist brightness, white body, quietness, moving on the right path, meaning upright nature. Moving on the right path means the ruler's heart is upright; moving on the wrong path means the ruler's heart is wicked. Slow movement indicates double blessing; speed or loss of position indicates emptiness.
