The Si Tian (Heavenly Ruler) Qi, the term "Si" implies presiding and uprightness; "Si Zhi" means presiding over upright Qi and attending to the Heavenly Dao. The Left and Right Jian Qi (Intermittent Qi) follow the upright position of the Si Tian, subordinate to it, and attend to the Heavenly Way. This Qi that appears intermittently according to the voids of Heaven is called "Jian Qi," meaning the intrinsic Qi acts intermittently as Heaven's temporal voids arise. Because it is the transformation commanded by the Si Tian, it is named Jian Qi. Thus, its relationship with the Heavenly Dao includes: Xiang De (harmony), Bu Xiang De (conflict), Bing Hua (co-transformation), Sheng Tian Ling Er Bu Hua (overcoming the Heavenly Command without transforming), Xian Yu Tian Ling (arriving before the Heavenly Command), Hou Yu Tian Ling (arriving after the Heavenly Command), Lai Zao Qu Zao (early arrival and early departure), Lai Wan Qu Wan (late arrival and late departure), Lai Zao Qu Wan (early arrival and late departure), Lai Wan Qu Zao (late arrival and early departure), Ju Tian Ling Er Bu Lai (fearing the Heavenly Command and not arriving), Zuo Ying You Bu Ying (Left responds but Right does not), You Ying Zuo Bu Ying (Right responds but Left does not), Zuo You Ju Ying (both respond), Zuo You Ju Bu Ying (neither responds), Cong Nan Zheng (following the Southern Upright), or Cong Bei Zheng (following the Northern Upright). Since the Heavenly Commands are not uniform, although predetermined, one must meticulously investigate them. To determine whether the Ji Nian (Year Cycle) Heavenly Commands transform or not, they are described below.
The Six Qi of Tian Yuan are Jue Yin, Shao Yin, Tai Yin, Shao Yang, Yang Ming, and Tai Yang. Jue Yin corresponds to the cycles of Si and Hai years; Shao Yin to Zi and Wu years; Tai Yin to Chou and Wei years; Shao Yang to Yin and Shen years; Yang Ming to Mao and You years; Tai Yang to Chen and Xu years. This is the number of cycles determined by the rotation of Yin and Yang, thus ending and beginning again in a loop.
Jue Yin belongs to Wood. Its command is Wind; its nature is warm; its virtue is harmony; its sorrow manifests as breaking and tearing; its excess manifests as snapping and falling; its reversal manifests as turbulent anger; its transformation number is 3x8=24; its insects are Hairy Ones (mammals); its zang organ is the Liver; its disease involves tremors, vertigo, and tendon cramping; its color is Green; its taste is Sour; its odor is Fishy; it nourishes tendons; its sensory organ is the Eye; it corresponds to Spring; its star is Suixing (Jupiter); its movement affects the Left Hypochondrium; its image is the Azure Dragon; its pulse is Wiry and long; its trigram is Zhen; its direction is Yin-Mao; its grain is Greenish; its fruit is Plum; its animal is Chicken; its disaster is falling; its disaster palace is Palace 3; its spirit is Hun; its fluid is Tears; it governs Si-Hai years; its Yun (Five Movements) combines with Ding-Ren years.
Shao Yin belongs to Sovereign Fire. Its command is Heat; its nature is warm; its virtue is benevolence; its change is oppressive steaming; its excess is severe heat; its reversal is stifling heat; its transformation number is 2x7=14; its insects are Feathered Ones (birds); its zang organ is the Heart; its disease involves fright and palpitations; its color is Red; its taste is Bitter; its odor is Scorched; it nourishes vessels; its sensory organ is the Tongue; it corresponds to Summer; its star is Huoxing (Mars, red and small); its movement affects the Center of the Chest; its image is the Vermilion Bird; its pulse is Surging and large; its trigram is Li; its direction is Si-Wu; its grain is Reddish; its fruit is Apricot; its animal is Sheep; its disaster is vexatious heat; its disaster palace is Palace 9; its spirit is Shen (groaning/distress); its fluid is Sweat; it governs Zi-Wu years; its Yun combines with Wu-Gui years. Shao Yin Sovereign Fire holds a prestigious name and does not dominate the Five Movements.
Tai Yin belongs to Earth. Its command is Rain; its nature is moist; its virtue is slackness/calmness; its change is dusty haze; its excess is continuous heavy rain; its reversal is drizzle; its transformation number is 5; its insects are Naked Ones (humans); its zang organ is the Spleen; its disease involves fullness, belching, and jaundice; its color is Yellow; its taste is Sweet; its odor is Fragrant; it nourishes flesh; its sensory organ is the Lips; it corresponds to Late Summer; its star is Zhensxing (Saturn); its movement affects the Umbilicus; its image is Gouchen (Central Earth symbol); its pulse is Slow; its trigram is Kun; its direction is Chen-Xu-Chou-Wei; its grain is Yellowish; its fruit is Date; its animal is Ox; its disaster is dimness/obscurity; its disaster palace is Palace 5; its spirit is Yi (thought/intellect); its fluid is Saliva; it governs Chou-Wei years; its Yun combines with Jia-Ji years.
Shao Yang belongs to Minister Fire. Its command is Hot Weather; its nature is flaming; its virtue is fierce; its change is boiling; its excess is melting stone; its reversal is flowing metal; its transformation number is 2x7=14; its insects are Winged Ones; its zang organ is the Pericardium; its disease involves mania and epilepsy; its color is Red; its taste is Bitter; its odor is Scorched; it nourishes Blood; its sensory organ is the Tongue; it corresponds to Summer; its star is Huoxing (Mars); its movement affects the Laogong acupoint on the palm; its image is the Vermilion Bird; its pulse is Hook-like; its trigram is Li; its direction is Si-Wu; its grain is Reddish; its fruit is Apricot; its animal is Sheep; its disaster is burning/scorching; its disaster palace is Palace 9; its spirit is Xi (joy); its fluid is Sweat; it governs Yin-Shen years; its Yun combines with Wu-Gui years.
Yang Ming belongs to Metal. Its command is Dryness; its nature is cool; its virtue is肃降 (descending/clearing); its change is austere killing; its excess is withering; its reversal is falling; its transformation number is 4x9=36; its insects are Armored Ones (shelled insects); its zang organ is the Lung; its disease involves wheezing, coughing, nasal congestion, and sneezing; its color is White; its taste is Pungent; its odor is Fishy; it nourishes skin and hair; its sensory organ is the Nose; it corresponds to Autumn; its star is Taibai (Venus); its movement affects the Right Hypochondrium; its image is the White Tiger; its pulse is Hair-like (floating/rough); its trigram is Dui; its direction is Shen-You; its grain is Whitish; its fruit is Peach; its animal is Horse; its disaster is frost and dew; its disaster palace is Palace 7; its spirit is Po; its fluid is Nasal Mucus; it governs Mao-You years; its Yun combines with Yi-Geng years.
Tai Yang belongs to Water. Its command is Cold; its nature is cool; its virtue is chilling; its change is biting cold; its excess is fine snow/rain; its reversal is hail; its transformation number is 1x6=6; its insects are Scaled Ones (fish/reptiles); its zang organ is the Kidney; its disease involves flaccidity and cold limbs; its color is Black; its taste is Salty; its odor is Putrid; it nourishes bones; its sensory organ is the Ear; it corresponds to Winter; its star is Chenxing (Mercury); its movement affects the lower abdomen; its image is the Black Tortoise; its pulse is Stone-like (deep); its trigram is Kan; its direction is Hai-Zi; its grain is Blackish; its fruit is Chestnut; its animal is Pig; its disaster is frost and snow; its disaster palace is Palace 1; its spirit is Jingzhi (essence/will); its fluid is Spittle; it governs Chen-Xu years; its Yun combines with Bing-Xin years.
Why does Jue Yin govern Si-Hai years? Because Jue Yin is Wood, and Wood is born in Hai, so it primarily governs Hai; it counter-governs Si. Although Mao is the proper position for Wood, because Yangming Metal is the counter-governor, it follows the principle of "following the birth place and complying with governance."
Why does Shao Yin govern Zi-Wu years? Because Shao Yin is Sovereign Fire. Due to its high status, it correctly occupies the Southern Li position, primarily governing Wu and counter-governing Zi.
Why does Tai Yin govern Chou-Wei years? Because Tai Yin is Earth. Earth governs the Central Palace and is associated with the Kun trigram. Kun is located in the Southwest, corresponding to Wei. Thus, it primarily governs Wei and counter-governs Chou.
Why does Shao Yang govern Yin-Shen years? Because Shao Yang is Minister Fire, which is subordinate to Sovereign Fire. Although Wu is the position of Fire, it is occupied by Sovereign Fire. Since Fire is born in Yin, it primarily governs Yin and counter-governs Shen.
Why does Yang Ming govern Mao-You years? Because Yang Ming is Metal, and You is the Western Metal position. Thus, it primarily governs You and counter-governs Mao.
Why does Tai Yang govern Chen-Xu years? Because Tai Yang is Water. Although Water is at Zi, it counter-governs with Sovereign Fire. Water returns to Earth. Liu Wu (Six Wus) is at the Heavenly Gate, which is Xu; Liu Si (Six Sis) is at the Earthly Door, which is Chen. Therefore, Water returns to Earth use, primarily governing Xu and counter-governing Chen.
Regarding the transformation numbers: Why is Wind/Wood 3x8? Why is Heat/Fire 2x7? Why is Rain/Earth 5? Why is Dryness/Metal 4x9? Why is Cold/Water 1x6? These are the Numbers of the Five Elements, each having Generation and Completion numbers. The Generation numbers are Water 1, Fire 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5. The Completion numbers are obtained by adding 5 to the generation numbers: Water 6, Fire 7, Wood 8, Metal 9, Earth 10. Why does Earth have no completion number? Because Earth prospers in the four seasons and does not occupy a single cardinal direction. Also, when the number reaches ten, the cycle restarts from five. There are nine palaces in Heaven, so it cannot reach ten; it returns at nine.
How are Generation, Completion, Primary, and Counter transformations explained? They arise from the Root (Ben) and complete via the Branch (Biao). Primary transformation is the Root; Counter transformation is the Branch. Jue Yin primarily transforms at Hai (Wind 3, Root/Generation number); it counter-transforms at Si (Wind 8, Branch/Completion number). Shao Yin primarily transforms at Wu (Heat 2, Root); it counter-transforms at Zi (Heat 7, Branch). Tai Yin primarily transforms at Wei and counter-transforms at Chou (Rain 5); Earth has no completion number, so only the generation number applies. Shao Yang primarily transforms at Yin (Fire 2, Root); it counter-transforms at Shen (Fire 7, Branch). Yang Ming primarily transforms at You (Dryness 4, Root); it counter-transforms at Mao (Dryness 9, Branch). Tai Yang primarily transforms at Xu (Cold 1, Root); it counter-transforms at Chen (Cold 6, Branch). Thus, the Root follows the Generation number, and the Branch follows the Completion number. The Primary command represents the substance of transformation, while the Counter command represents the emptiness/virtual aspect.
The Left and Right Jian Qi follow the Si Tian. For example, if Jue Yin is Si Tian, the Left is Shao Yin and the Right is Tai Yang. If Shao Yin is Si Tian, the Left is Tai Yin and the Right is Jue Yin. If Tai Yin is Si Tian, the Left is Shao Yang and the Right is Shao Yin. If Shao Yang is Si Tian, the Left is Yang Ming and the Right is Tai Yin. If Yang Ming is Si Tian, the Left is Tai Yang and the Right is Shao Yang. If Tai Yang is Si Tian, the Left is Jue Yin and the Right is Yang Ming. Here, "front" is Left and "back" is Right. If governed by the Northern Upright, Left is West and Right is East. If governed by the Southern Upright, Left is East and Right is West. Generally, Wood, Fire, Metal, and Water Yun govern via the Northern Upright, while only Earth Yun governs via the Southern Upright.
The Si Tian command, along with the Zai Quan (In Earth) and Da Yun (Great Movement), jointly governs the year. The Left and Right Jian Qi do not function this way. The Left Jian Qi governs the first three Qi periods (Initial, Second, Third), corresponding to Wood, Sovereign Fire, and Minister Fire. The Right Jian Qi governs the last three Qi periods (Fourth, Fifth, Final), corresponding to Earth, Metal, and Water.
When do Jian Qi arrive or not arrive? For instance, if Shao Yang (Minister Fire) is Si Tian, the Left Jian Qi sees Yang Ming (Metal). Metal avoids Fire, so it does not arrive. However, if the Minister Fire counter-transforms due to a heavenly void, or if a Water Yun occurs, it may slightly arrive. Otherwise, it does not arrive. All others arrive. If Shao Yin is Si Tian, the Left Jian Qi sees Tai Yin (Earth). Tai Yin fears the Initial Wood Qi, so it arrives late. Why? Because it enters the Second Qi period only after the Wood Qi retreats, hence the late arrival. This method applies to all other cases.
The Left Jian Qi governs earlier, and the Right Jian Qi governs later. They arrive if they are in harmony with Si Tian. The sequence has rules described later. If Jian Qi overcomes Si Tian, it arrives; if Si Tian overcomes Jian Qi, it does not arrive. The timing also follows the Primary/Counter transformation rules. The Left Jian Qi follows the Yang遁 (Yang escape) pattern within the bureau, harmonizing with Heaven and arriving with the Zhi Fu (Direct Deity). How to verify? For example, in a Zi year, Shao Yin is Si Tian. The Left Jian Qi is Tai Yin (Earth), which governs Palace 5. When Jia Zi enters Palace 5, it arrives. In a Chou year, Tai Yin is Si Tian. The Left Jian Qi is Shao Yang (Minister Fire), which governs Palace 9. When Jia Zi rotates to Chou and enters the Li Palace, Shao Yang arrives. These two examples illustrate how to apply this to all other cases carefully.
