In general, regarding the descent and ascent of the Six Qi (Wind, Heat, Fire, Dampness, Dryness, Cold), if their positions are correct, there will be signs when their qi arrives. The prosperity or decline, reversal or smoothness, and auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of the qi are all reflected in the variations of the images of the Five Planets (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth stars). Predictions of solar and lunar climates and celestial phenomena all originate from the climatic divination of the Si Tian (Presiding Heaven) qi.
Or the qi has arrived but the star is not visible, or the qi has not arrived but the star appears first; or it deviates from its orbit and leaves its position, or it comes early or late; or it should be grand but instead becomes small, or it should be dim but instead becomes bright; or the qi should manifest but only one star is seen when there are two, or the qi corresponds but the star does not respond, or it should be seen but is not; or it is that the sun or moon deviates from its orbit, or the sun or moon shines too brightly, or the sun or moon is dim; or it appears simultaneously with the climate, or different stars attach to each other, or a star aligns with the moon but is disturbed by abnormal qi; or they pass through the same degree, or invade the Moon's Horn, or two stars punish each other causing one star to shrink, or two stars' radiance shoots at each other. All these govern omens of auspiciousness or inauspiciousness. Human affairs below correspond to heavenly phenomena above, and the fulfillment is obvious. The changes of all things, diseases of the people, seasonal terms, and disasters or blessings yet to come are all described here. This chapter assumes:
Suppose Shaoyin Junhuo (Ministerial Fire of the Heart Pericardium/Mingmen) presides over Heaven, corresponding to bright and blazing stars (such as Yinghuo/Fire Star) in the heavens. If it appears bright and majestic, this indicates the status of Ministerial Fire in Heaven. If it is not visible, why is that? Unless it is a year of excessive Water Yun (Water Movement), invisibility is an inauspicious omen. Except in years of excessive Water, if not seen in Heaven, it should be seen on Earth during the time when Earth uses its qi, specifically after the middle of the year. If it is not seen during these two appropriate times, it is also considered inauspicious. Or if it appears alongside the Five Planets, it signifies the monarch losing political authority; if it is beside the Metal Star (Venus), and the Metal Star is large and bright while the blazing star is dim and small, it signifies an omen of rebellion by military generals or ministers. Furthermore, such a blazing star resembles Yinghuo (Mars) and is red; even if small like Mars but without flashing brilliance, originally red and small/bright, this is normal. If the Water Star (Mercury) or Wood Star (Jupiter) approaches it, there must be an omen of impending rebellion in the phase. If it is close to Fire or Earth, it also signifies non-submission. Therefore, the Five Planets must not compete for brilliance with this blazing star; all signify non-submission. Additionally, if this blazing star appears as two, it is not due to Yinghuo approaching. They are similar in size and indistinguishable, signifying a new ruler yet to emerge replacing the current era.
Similarly, if the Baiqi Star (Venus) sometimes appears as two, identical in size and indistinguishable, and close to each other, one is the Baiqi Star, and the other is the Gejia Star (star symbolizing war). Their appearance signifies a great battle. Similarly, if Yinghuo (Mars) sometimes appears as two, identical in size and indistinguishable, close within degrees, one is Yinghuo, and the other is the Kangji Star. Their appearance signifies a severe drought. If they retreat, grace extends to Chenxing (Mercury). Or if Chenxing sometimes appears as two, identical in size and indistinguishable, close within degrees, one is the Water Star, and the other is named Linze Star. Their appearance signifies heavy rain. When this star falls and scatters, it signifies heavy snow. Also, if Suxing (Jupiter) sometimes appears as two, similar in size and radiance, close within degrees, one is named the Wood Star, and the other is named the Qiangkou Star. Their appearance signifies victory for bandits, fulfilling within half a year. Also, if Zhenxing (Saturn) sometimes appears as two, very similar in size and radiance, close within degrees, one is named the Earth Star, and the other is named the Linyu Star. Their appearance signifies neighboring countries invading borders, fulfilling in the following year. These are inauspicious signs caused by the assistance of the Six Qi.
It is also said, what does it mean when Baiqi resembles Laoren Star? That is, in a year where Metal presides in Heaven, appearing in the North, i.e., seen in Autumn, resembling Baiqi, distant rather than close. Seeing it means autumn cool policies do not implement ruthless killing, signifying national longevity. In a year where Wood presides in Heaven, Jingxing appears in the East, half-moon sized with radiance, signifying the emergence of a wise ruler. Where Water presides in Heaven, Xianshi Star appears, resembling Chenxing, blue-white light without glare, smaller than Chenxing and distant, signifying a worthy person living in seclusion in the wild without fame. Also, where Fire presides in Heaven, Wenli Star appears. This star has four above and two below, the lower two forming the body of the Dipper, extremely small and red. Seeing it signifies a great plague across the world, with half dying. If treated with emetics only on the Spring Equinox, illness can be avoided. Also, in a year where Fire presides in Heaven, Tianyu Star appears, large, with yellow-red qi attaching intermittently for three hours. Seeing it signifies widespread contagious plague. Treatment with medicine before the Spring Equinox via sweating (diaphoresis) resolves it in three stages. Cooling the upper and tonifying the lower without haste. Also, where Wood presides in Heaven, Maotou Star appears, large with radiance growing long. This star must not scatter; if it scatters, locusts will infest the world in the third year, devouring crops. Also, in a year where Metal presides in Heaven, Baiqi is close to Shixing. Shixing resembles Zongxing but is small, dim with white qi attached inside, representing Fu Shi (hidden corpse) qi. It signifies millions killed and blood flowing for thousands of miles. Yinghuo must not approach Shixing either, meaning corpses are left exposed in the fields. Also, where Earth presides in Heaven, or in the Quan (Subterranean) year, Jiaose Star appears, resembling Zhenxing but smaller and in a different degree. Seeing it signifies global abundance. Also, in a year where Earth presides in Heaven, a large star appears in the South, large, yellow-white, flashing radiance, named Zhanghuang Star. Seeing it for several nights, possibly making sounds and scattering, turning into red qi then fading to yellow, the next day the sky has no wind or clouds, turns yellow, and the sun becomes dim. This is named Tianyu Qi. It signifies a global plague causing household extinction. Seeing it allows treatment with emetics and diaphoresis to prevent illness. If one contracts this disease, emetics and purgatives are used, avoiding warming tonification.
In a year where Fire presides in Heaven, seeing red in the month is normal upon initial appearance. If the red persists until Wu-Wei hours (noon to afternoon), it signifies severe drought. If Fire invades the Moon's Horn, it signifies drought; if Water invades the Moon's Horn, it signifies heavy rain. If the sky is cloudy and dim from sunrise until Chen-Si hours (morning) without clouds, it signifies disaster to the ruler. If the full moon is red and dim, it signifies disaster to the Empress. If Baiqi suddenly turns red, strong winds follow the next day. If black qi in the Big Dipper flows south across the Milky Way to Nanji, it signifies heavy rain. If a large star appears in the Northeast in a Metal Heaven year, large with radiance, with a small star below and faint white qi in the Well constellation, named Huixing (Comet), it signifies civil strife. In a Wood Heaven year, if Suxing loses its degree and drifts north towards the Big Dipper near Xuanxiao, moving east-west left-right seemingly shaking, it signifies national destruction, people's disaster, and military victory within twelve years. Also, between 1-3 AM (Zi-Chou hours), seeing an image like sunrise in the East with high red qi covering the East, followed by two large stars emerging at dawn still visible at Chen hour (7-9 AM), named Jingxing, signifies national disaster and agricultural unemployment. If Baiqi appears in the East early in Yang years (named Qiming/Dawn Star) and in the West evening in Yin years (named Baiqi), failing to follow time/degree rules signifies civil strife and loss of governance. White qi like an overturned boat at sunrise signifies a bloody凶 year and people's disease. Clouds at dusk changing shape into dragons/tigers or geese signify treacherous rebellion. Stars visible in daylight signify non-submission. Five Planets out of degree signify auspicious/inauspicious events.
In a Wood Yun year where Wood presides in Heaven, Suxing should appear large and bright. If Wood Yun matches Heaven and Wood is deficient, receiving excess Metal, Baiqi becomes large and bright. If Baiqi shares the degree with Suxing, Suxing shrinks, and Baiqi dominates closely. Seven years later, the world suffers Wind-Dryness diseases. Treat with bitter-hot, assisted by sour-neutral. In a Fire Yun year where Fire presides in Heaven, Fire matches Heaven, Wood retaliates excessively, Yinghuo appears greatly. If Chenxing shares degree, Yinghuo hides and shrinks. Three years later, the world suffers Cold-Heat diseases. Treat with sweet-warm, assisted by bitter-hot. In a Earth Yun year where Earth presides in Heaven, Earth matches Heaven, Water wins excessively, Zhenxing appears greatly. If Suxing shares degree with Earth, Zhenxing shrinks, Suxing shines closely. Eight years later, the world suffers Wind-Dampness diseases. Treat with pungent-cool, assisted by sweet-warm. In a Metal Yun year where Metal presides in Heaven, Metal is deficient, Fire wins excessively, Baiqi appears greatly. If Yinghuo shares degree, Baiqi shrinks, Yinghuo shines closely. Six years later, the world suffers Restlessness-Dryness diseases. Treat with salty-cold, assisted by pungent-cool. In a Water Yun year where Water presides in Heaven, Water is deficient, Earth wins excessively, Chenxing appears greatly. If Zhenxing shares degree, Chenxing shrinks, Zhenxing shines closely. Six years later, the world suffers Cold-Warm diseases. Treat with sour-neutral, assisted by salty-cold. The years of disease are calculated from the generating numbers combined. Wood punished by Metal is seven years (Wood 3 + Metal 4 = 7). Diseases are Wind-Dryness (Metal/Wood); punish Metal excess, restore Wood deficiency. Fire punished by Water is three years (Water 1 + Fire 2 = 3). Diseases are Cold-Heat (Water/Fire); punish Water excess, restore Fire deficiency. Earth punished by Wood is eight years (Wood 3 + Earth 5 = 8). Diseases are Wind-Dampness (Wood/Earth); punish Wood excess, restore Earth deficiency. Metal punished by Fire is six years (Fire 2 + Metal 4 = 6). Diseases are Restlessness-Dryness (Fire/Metal); punish Fire excess, restore Metal deficiency. Water punished by Earth is six years (Water 1 + Earth 5 = 6). Diseases are Cold-Dampness (Water/Earth); punish Earth excess, restore Water deficiency. In years of Victory-Retribution, if stars are not in the same degree and do not overcome each other, these diseases do not occur. If only Victory-Retribution occurs without stars hiding each other, there is no such disaster.
