Various spasms and rigidity, accumulation of retained fluids, chest and epigastric stuffiness with obstruction and abdominal fullness, cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea, heaviness of the body, edema with muscles soft as mud that do not rebound upon pressure—all these belong to Dampness (Shi). (The Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian belongs to Wet Earth, corresponding to the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach.)
(Regarding "Various Spasms and Rigidity")
Various spasms and rigidity: Refers to sinews becoming tense, stiff, and lacking flexibility. This is because the nature of Earth is quiet. Yin spasm manifests as flaccid; Yang spasm manifests as rigid. When hyperactivity reaches its extreme, it causes harm, requiring a controlling force to balance it; thus, when Dampness becomes excessive, it may paradoxically assume Wind-like characteristics to self-regulate. However, this assumed transformation is a false image (deficiency pattern), and is not actually Wind pathogen.
(Regarding "Accumulation of Retained Fluids")
Accumulation of retained fluids (Ji Yin): Refers to water fluids stagnating and accumulating without dispersing. Water dissipates when meeting Dryness but fails to digest when meeting Dampness, thereby forming accumulated fluids. This occurs because Wet Earth causes obstruction and lack of free flow.
(Regarding "Stagnation" or "Pi Syndrome")
Stagnation (Pi): Homophonous with "Pi" (obstruction), meaning lack of smoothness and unimpeded flow. It refers to the blockage of the channels through which Spirit, Ying-Wei (Defensive and Nutritive Qi), Blood, Qi, and Body Fluids circulate in and out, resulting in Pi syndrome.
(Regarding "Obstruction" or "Ge Syndrome")
Obstruction (Ge): Refers to blockage. It denotes the isolation between the Intestines and Stomach, leading to a loss of normal transmission and transformation functions.
(Regarding "Epigastric Fullness" or "Zhong Man")
Epigastric Fullness (Zhong Man): Caused by Dampness leading to fluid accumulation, stagnation, and obstruction. Since Earth governs the physical form and is located centrally, it results in central (epigastric) fullness.
(Regarding "Cholera-like Vomiting and Diarrhea")
Cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea: Dampness causes fluid retention, stagnation, and obstruction, disrupting normal transmission and transformation; thus, in severe cases, it leads to cholera-like vomiting and purging!
(Regarding "Heaviness of the Body")
Heaviness of the body: Light and clear Qi ascends to form Heaven, while heavy and turbid Qi descends to form Earth. Therefore, when disease arises from Wet Earth, bodily heaviness is an expected manifestation.
(Regarding "Edema")
Edema, with muscles soft as mud that do not rebound upon pressure: This resembles the imagery of mud. When Earth Qi is excessively wet, it turns into mud. As a pathogenic factor of Dampness, it causes accumulated fluids, Pi syndrome, Ge syndrome, epigastric fullness, cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea, and bodily heaviness; thus, in severe cases, it leads to edema.
Various fevers, mental confusion (Mao), sudden aphonia, dizziness and stupor, restlessness and mania, cursing and shouting, fright and terror, edema with pain and soreness, rebellious Qi rushing upward, trembling and shivering as if losing spiritual control, sneezing, vomiting, sores and ulcers, throat bi (obstruction), tinnitus and deafness, violent vomiting with inability to ingest food, blurred vision. Sudden violent diarrhea, [text missing/symbol], sudden onset of disease or sudden death—all these belong to Fire (Huo). (The Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian relates to Ministerial Fire, corresponding to the Qi of the Pericardium and Sanjiao.)
