To treat these six types of excessive Qi (excess of the Six Qi), when Wind-Wood is excessive, treat with sweet and cooling substances as the main therapy, assist with bitter and pungent substances, and drain it with sour substances. (This refers to Jueyin Wind-Wood excess, where Wood Qi is hyperactive; one should first tonify what it cannot overcome. When Wood is hyperactive, first tonify Spleen-Earth, then drain Liver-Wood. "Treat with sweet and cooling": Sweet flavor harmonizes Spleen-Earth; cooling nature is used for Spring Wood hyperactivity, employing a sweet-cooling method. "Assist with bitter and pungent": The Spleen suffers from dampness, urgently requiring bitter food to dry it, and pungent food to moisten it. "Drain with sour": Sour flavor drains the hyperactive Qi of Liver-Wood; this is first restoring what it cannot overcome [Spleen], then draining.)
When Heat-Fire is excessive, treat with pungent and cold substances as the main therapy, assist with bitter and salty substances, and drain it with sweet substances. (This is caused by Ministerial Fire reaching the Lungs, causing Lung-Metal disease. Treat with pungent-cold; pungent-cold assists Lung Qi. In Summer, use cold nature to dissipate Fire Qi. "Assist with bitter and salty": The Lung suffers from rebellious Qi, urgently requiring bitter food to drain it; salty substance assists Ministerial Fire, and Spleen prefers salty food. Then use sweet flavor to drain. Using salty to tonify and sweet to drain achieves harmony.)
When Damp-Earth is excessive, treat with salty and hot substances as the main therapy, assist with pungent and sweet substances, and drain it with bitter substances. (Damp excess is Taiyin Damp-Earth disease; Earth is hyperactive while Kidney-Water is pathogenic, and Wood returns to what it cannot overcome. This treatment for Damp excess refers to after Ministerial Fire, where Damp-Heat contend. Salty makes Fire soft and pliable; Kidney is the gate of Stomach, taking the softening nature and taste of salty; Hot nature assists. "Assist with pungent and sweet": Pungent and sweet disperse through sweating to scatter Dampness.)
When Fire is excessive, treat with pungent and cold substances as the main therapy, assist with sweet and salty substances, and drain it with sweet substances. (Same treatment as Heat excess. "Assist with sweet and salty": Assist Spleen-Earth, then use sweet to drain hyperactive Fire.)
When Dryness-Metal is excessive, treat with sour and warm substances as the main therapy, assist with pungent and sweet substances, and drain it with bitter substances. (Dryness arises in Autumn, Liver-Wood is pathogenic; use sour to drain Wood, Autumn usage is warm. "Assist with pungent and sweet": Pungent drains Lung Qi, first restoring what it cannot overcome [Liver], then using sweet to drain Fire-Heat. Use bitter to drain away the disease.)
When Cold-Water is excessive, treat with sweet and hot substances as the main therapy, assist with pungent and sour substances, and drain it with salty substances. (Winter uses hot nature, Taiyin Water transformation; treat with sweet-hot. "Assist with pungent and sour": Sweet assisted by pungent disperses Cold pathogens; Sour increases Metal Qi. Draining with salty: Salty drains Kidney-Water and tonifies Heart. Because Winter uses hot medicine, it aligns with tonifying Fire and draining Water. Among the Six Transformations, only Taiyin Cold-Water does not return to "what it cannot overcome," differing from the previous ones.)
In all these applications, there must first be an Excessive Qi, followed by its Rebounding Qi. The so-called Rebounding Qi is excess. (From old classics) When Wind rebounds, the lower abdomen becomes hard and full, internal urgency and sudden pain occur, trees shake and sand flies, scale-covered creatures do not prosper, Juexin pain occurs, sweating, vomiting, food cannot enter or enters and immediately exits, sinews and bones tremble and dizzy, (muscles twitch), clear cold extremities, severe cases invade the Spleen, causing food obstruction and vomiting. If Chongyang pulse vanishes, death is inevitable and untreatable.
When Heat rebounds, internal restlessness and heat arise, irritability, nasal congestion and sneezing, lower abdominal colic occur, Fire appears like burning, throat dries, diarrhea flows like water but stops intermittently, Qi moves on the left and ascends on the right, cough, skin pain, sudden aphonia, heart pain, depression and fainting with loss of consciousness, shivering aversion to cold, trembling delirium, external heat follows cold, thirst desiring drink, shortness of breath, bone atrophy, diaphragm and intestines obstructed, external edema, hiccups and belching, Red Qi transforms later, Great Heat spreads, shell-covered creatures do not rebound, diseases like febrile rashes, sores, ulcers, acne, hemorrhoids occur, severe cases invade the Lungs, causing cough and nasal sinusitis. If Tianfu pulse vanishes, death is inevitable and untreatable.
When Dampness rebounds, Damp changes rise, body weight and middle-fullness occur, food and drink are not transformed, Yin Qi rebels upward, chest discomfort, phlegm-fluid rises internally, cough and wheezing with sound, heavy rain frequently occurs, scale-covered creatures appear on land, head and neck pain and heaviness, tremors especially severe, vomiting and silent muteness, spitting clear fluid, severe cases invade the Kidneys, orifices leak without limit. If Taixi pulse vanishes, death is inevitable.
When Fire rebounds, Great Heat approaches, dryness and irritability occur, shell-covered creatures are depleted, fright, cough, and epistaxis occur, heart heat and irritability, frequent urination and aversion to wind, rebellious Qi ascends, face like floating dust, eyes blurred, Fire Qi erupts internally, ascending to cause mouth ulcers and vomiting/reversal, blood overflow or bleeding, manifesting as malaria, aversion to cold and chattering teeth, extreme cold turning to heat, throat meridians scorched and dry, thirst drawing fluids, color changing yellow-red, shortness of breath and withered pulse, transforming into water, transmitting into swelling, severe cases invade the Lungs, causing cough and bloody stool. If ChiZe pulse vanishes, death is inevitable.
When Dryness rebounds, Clear Qi rises greatly, trees become gray and dry, hair-covered creatures suffer severely, disease arises in the hypochondrium, Qi returns to the left, frequent sighing, heart pain and fullness, abdominal distension and diarrhea, vomiting bitter fluid, cough and hiccups, vexation, disease in the diaphragm, headache, severe cases invade the Liver, fright and tendon contraction. If Taichong pulse vanishes, death is inevitable.
When Cold rebounds, rebellious Qi ascends, water freezes and rain turns to ice, feather-covered creatures die, Heart and Stomach generate cold, chest discomfort, heart pain and fullness, headache, frequent sadness, occasional vertigo, reduced appetite, lumbar pain, difficulty bending and stretching, ground cracks and ice hardens, sunlight fails to shine, lower abdomen controls testicles, pulling waist and spine, Qi rushes up to the heart, spitting clear fluid, and hiccups/belching, severe cases invade the Heart, frequent forgetfulness and sadness. If Shenmen pulse vanishes, death is inevitable.
