General Discussion on Eye Diseases
There are seventy-two types of symptoms in eye diseases; treatment must investigate the root cause. Generally, redness indicates Heat (Re), whiteness indicates Cold (Han), itching indicates Wind (Feng), and dryness/astringency indicates the action of toxic vapors (Du Wa). If caused by Wind, disperse it; if by Heat, cool it; if by Cold, warm and tonify it; if by Qi stagnation, regulate and smooth it. One must absolutely avoid using knives, needles, or cutting points. Occasional cures are merely luck; otherwise, it may become a lifelong affliction. It is also inadvisable to overuse cold-natured medicines, as this may freeze the blood, causing coagulation and stasis, thereby forming chronic diseases. Medicines should be prescribed according to the patient's age and the deficiency or excess of their constitution. Patients with Kidney Deficiency (Shen Xu) may also suffer from lackluster eyes or the formation of corneal opacities (Yi); warming the Lower Yuan (Xia Yuan) and benefiting Kidney Water (Shen Shui) will lead to self-healing. Treatment for people in the North differs from that in the South. People in the North suffer from eye diseases most frequently, all due to exposure to wind and sand during the day and sleeping on heated kang beds at night, where the two energies steam each other; thus, treatment often employs cold medicines. This is because the innate endowment of Northerners differs originally from Southerners. Treating women differs from men, as some medicines may damage the fetus or induce abortion, so these must be excluded. Angelica Sinensis (Danggui) should be the principal herb, as it can invigorate Blood (Huo Xue). Other herbs are added according to specific symptoms. Children’s eye diseases differ from adults’, usually stemming from Fetal Toxin (Tai Du). This results from the mother consuming excessive hot-natured foods during conception; even after one hundred days or one week, it remains fetal toxin. Those who develop eye issues between ages one and two have likely enjoyed fried, roasted, or pungent (Wu Xin) hot foods, causing toxins to accumulate in the Five Zang Organs, which then attack and manifest. For children, eye diseases present as Excess (Shi) rather than Deficiency (Xu), and Heat rather than Cold. When encountering a child with eye disease, one must absolutely avoid blowing medicine into or dropping it into the eyes, lest the unstable Qi and Blood damage the eyes. Only Baidu San (Poison-Resolving Powder) should be used. If, following smallpox or chickenpox, toxic vapors stagnate in the Heart and Liver meridians, unable to vent, and attack the eyes, damaging the pupil, there is no fixed method of treatment.
Universal Prescription for Eye Diseases
Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Ganju (Chrysanthemi Flos), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Bencao (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Ruxiang (Olibanum), Moyao (Myrrha) — each 1 qian; Quanxie (Scorpio) — 3 pieces.
Decoct in 2 bowls of water until 1 bowl remains. Take on an empty stomach. For any eye disease from onset up to ten days, taking 2–3 doses urgently will invariably bring immediate cure. Arbitrary modifications rarely yield results. (From *Mifang Jiyuan*)
Stars Rising in the Eye
Take fresh water chestnuts (Biqi), crush them, sprinkle the juice onto paper to form a powder, wait for it to dry, scrape off the powder, and apply to the affected area. (Ancient Formula)
Miraculous Eye-Washing Formula (Collected by Daoist Zhang Daoren from the Daoist Canon, intended to benefit all directions; effective for blindness, earth-pathogen invasion, cloudy vision, wind-eye, fiery-eye, and blurred vision; long-term washing restores clarity.)
Use Piao Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) 6 qian, Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex) 1 liang (raw). Decoct in plain water. On designated dates, wash the eyes dozens of times while hot.
Dates: 5th of the 1st month, 2nd of the 2nd, 3rd of the 3rd, 9th of the 4th, 5th of the 5th, 4th of the 6th, 3rd of the 7th, 19th of the 8th, 12th of the 9th, 12th of the 10th, 4th of the 11th, 4th of the 12th. Leap months follow the current month.
These are auspicious star days, representing universal illumination. This formula is worth a thousand gold and has been tested repeatedly with success. Source: (*Daozang*)
Sheep Liver Pill (Treats insufficiency of the Liver Meridian in both men and women, wind-heat attacking the head and eyes, causing dim vision, photophobia, corneal opacities, and congenital blindness.)
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 1 liang (powdered); Yangzi Gan (Ovis Felis Hepat) 1 piece (remove membrane).
Grind thoroughly and mix with the Huanglian powder to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Swallow 14 pills with warm fermented rice water after each meal. Complete five courses for recovery. Formerly, Cui Chengyuan saved a death-row prisoner who later died. Cui himself suffered from cataracts for over a year. Sitting alone at midnight, he heard crickets chirping below the steps and asked why. The voice replied, "I am the prisoner you once saved, here specifically to repay your kindness." He then revealed this formula. After Cui took it, his sight was restored within a few days. (From Liu Yuxi's *Chuanxin Fang*)
Corneal Opacity in Eyes
Hao Yanxiao (Sal Nitratis) 1 liang (melted in a copper vessel), Huangdan (Minii Oxidum Rubrum) (sublimated/purified), Pian Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum) — each 2 fen.
Stir-fry rapidly with a copper spoon, store in a jar. Apply a tiny amount to the eye; the effect is miraculous. Scholar Zhu from Kezhou suddenly lost his sight. He worshipped Heaven morning and evening, and a deity transmitted this formula in a dream. (Zhang Sanfeng's Immortal Formula)
Eye Drops (High-quality drops from the capital, capable of treating seventy-two eye diseases)
Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) and Xiongdan (Ursi Fel) — each 1 fen. Process cleanly and grind to an extremely fine powder. Apply in the early morning like viewing stars; if one lowers their head, the efficacy is lost. Even ten-year blindness can be cured.
Seventy-Two Types of Eye Diseases
Cut open one Sheep Gallbladder (Yangdan), insert 1 qian of honey, tie tightly with thread, knead evenly with both hands, boil briefly in plain water, remove immediately, and soak in cold water for half a day. Pour out the liquid.
Bright-Eye Powder
Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) combined with Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma); Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Ganju (Chrysanthemi Flos); Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus); Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Mimenghua (Principis Flos).
Grind each ingredient separately into fine powder in equal parts. Take 3 qian per dose, washed down only with tea. I advise you to take one dose daily; your pupils will see the ends of the earth from close range. (From *Wanbing Huichun*)
Blurred Vision
Decoct chrysanthemum in urine of a healthy young boy (Tongbian); wash several times until healed. (From *Yuanjitang Kanshi*)
Removing Corneal Opacity
Ruren (Buckthorn Fruit) 2 liang, remove oil; add Pengsha (Borax) 1 qian, Shexiang (Moschus) 2 fen. Grind uniformly and store. Excellent for removing opacities. (From *Bencao*)
Redness and Swelling
Soak Huhuanglian (Coptidis Chinensis Rhizoma) in human milk and apply to the eye; for children, apply to the sole of the foot. (Ancient Formula)
Sudden Onset of Pain and Swelling
First, take a piece of blue cloth, wet it with water, wash it, and let it dry. Separately, use ginger juice and Baijian (Alumen) powder to dip the cloth and rub it on the eyelids. Close the eyes for a moment; tearing will occur, and pain will cease. (From *Mifang Jiyuan*)
Brighten Eyes and Tonify Kidney (Also treats bone and tendon pain)
Small red jujubes 12 pieces (wash in cold water, remove stems); Ganzhou Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus) 3 qian; Xiaomaliaodou (Vigna angularis var. nipponica) 4 qian.
Decoct in 2 bowls of water until half remains. Eat together with the decoction on an empty stomach in the morning. For brightening eyes specifically, use Gouqizi 3 qian and 7 chrysanthemum flowers (remove stems), taken with plain boiled water every morning. Long-term use can restore sight in congenital blindness. (From *Mifang Jiyuan*)
Congenital Blindness (Qingmang)
Male rat gallbladder (rat gallbladders are smallest and break easily if startled) and carp gallbladder — 2 of each. Mix evenly and drip into the eye; immediate effect. (From *Shenghui Fang*)
Liver Deficiency Night Blindness (Que Mu)
Huangla (Beeswax) as needed, melt and pour out; mix with Ge Fen (Concha Tridacnae) appropriately. Cut off 2 qian each time. Slice 2 liang of pig liver, insert the medicine inside, tie tightly with hemp rope. Cook in 1 bowl of water in a clay pot. Steam the eyes while hot. When warm enough, eat the liver along with the medicine. Twice daily, continue until stable. Effective.
Childhood Night Blindness
One castrated sheep liver, do not wash. Slice open with a bamboo knife, insert a handful of Gujingcao (Essciae Spica), cook in a clay pot. Eat daily; repeatedly effective. Avoid ironware.
Filament Entering the Eye
Crush Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma). Block the right nostril if the left eye is affected, and the left nostril if the right eye is affected; highly effective. Alternatively, make small pills from wood comb dirt and place them at the corner of the eye; the filament will exit.
Tobacco Ash in the Eye
Common in children and smokers. Washing with other liquids increases pain and leads to blindness unless stopped. Must use loose hair or tassel threads to gently rub the eye until healed. (Manuscript Copy)
Dust and Sand in the Eye
Take one live dung beetle (Qianglang). Hold its mandibles above the eye and wave/shadow it; the dust will exit. (Recorded by Mr. Xu)
Wheat Awn in the Eye
Decoct barley water to wash the eye; the awn will exit. (From *Danfang Quanjí*)
Trauma to the Eye (If the eyeball protrudes, press it back in urgently)
Take a slice of raw pork. Sprinkle Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Chishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum) powder onto the meat and apply as a patch. Expel toxic blood to heal. (From *Danfang Jiyuan*)
