Wind generation after rash refers to the condition where, after the measles rash subsides, both Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi are deficient. Extreme deficiency generates internal heat, and extreme heat stirs up Liver Wind. Symptoms include spasms and convulsions of the hands and feet, staring eyes, stiffness of the neck, opisthotonos (arching of the back like a bow), and foaming at the mouth. This is caused by Spleen deficiency being constrained by Liver Wood. The treatment should focus on calming the Liver and dispersing Wind.
"Rotting Stomach with Macules" occurs due to extreme heat causing blood to move recklessly; when interior heat is extreme and exterior Qi is deficient, macules appear on the skin. Mild cases resemble small sores, while severe cases resemble brocade patterns. Purple-black macules indicate extreme heat leading to stomach rot, with nine out of ten patients dying. For red macules accompanied by irritability and pain, Xijiao Daqing Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Indigo Decoction) is suitable for resolution. If subsequently complicated by Cold Damage (Shanghan), or if purgation was indicated but not used, or sweating was indicated but not performed, heat toxins will steam internally. When the Stomach is affected by heat toxins, macules erupt in the skin. Red macules are treated with Huaban Tang (Macule-Resolving Decoction); black macules indicate stomach rot, with no survivors.
Regarding residual toxins, this is a syndrome of severe blood-heat and heavy toxins. It results either from delayed cooling and resolving, or from excessive use of cold-natured herbs, both representing failures in proper regulation. Alternatively, mistaken use of warming and tonifying herbs, along with pungent, sour, drying, and spicy foods, traps fire and causes stagnation, leaving residual toxins. Since blood-heat and toxin severity do not constitute a deficiency syndrome, using cooling and purging methods restores Qi. This illustrates the principle that "cooling and purging can achieve tonification."
The nose connects with Heaven, which corresponds to the head. The Lung orifice opens at the nose, and the Yangming Stomach Meridian circles the nose and ascends. The brain is the mansion of the Original Spirit (Yuan Shen), and the nose is the orifice of the Mingmen (Gate of Life). If Clear Yang fails to ascend, the head tilts, and the nine orifices become obstructed. During the pre-eruption or early eruption phase of measles, Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) is appropriate. If exterior release is ineffective, Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) should be used urgently. Overuse of sour-astringent herbs will prevent the rash from emerging clearly. Therefore, Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Zisu (Perillae Folium), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Su Ye (Perillae Folium), and Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) are indispensable during the exterior-releasing stage, though dosages must not be excessive. For recurrent eruptions, these exterior-releasing herbs are also needed. Cold-purgative herbs affecting the large intestine should not be overused. Songmaojian (Pinus Massoniana Tips), being extremely cold, is particularly contraindicated; this must be strictly observed. Exterior-releasing stages generally contraindicate extremely cold herbs, except occasionally using Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) as an emergency measure to ensure cold pathogens do not linger after bowel movement. After the rash has fully erupted, local remedies are available for the descending phase, suitable for all regardless of wealth: Pipa Ye (Loquat Leaf), Jingzhuhuang (Bambusa Textilis Caulis), Lvdou (Phaseoli Semen), Zhima (Sesami Semen), and Nuomici (Oryza Sativa Glutinosa) decoction. Regular consumption of these five ingredients ensures safety for children. For excessive phlegm, add Jingzhuli (Bambusa Textilis Juice); for asthma, add Luobuzi (Brassicae Semismae); for excess Stomach Fire, add Shuilugen (Phragmitis Rhizoma); for dark urine and bloody stool, add Baimaogen (Imperatae Rhizoma); for Lung heat with asthma, take together; for hiccups, add Dou Dou (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Fructus); for generalized pruritus, use Sangzhi (Mori Ramulus); for asthma, combine Qiaomai (Fagopyri Esculenti Fructum) and Suzi (Perillae Fructus); for tidal fever, Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) is effective; Dengxincao (Junci Medulla) and Zhuye (Bambusa Leaves) relieve thirst and promote urination. For absence of sweat, add Congbai to induce perspiration; for qi stagnation and phlegm, use Jiezi (Sinapis Semen); for red eyes, use Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Xiakucao (Prunellae Spica); for epistaxis, blow hair ash into the nose. Furthermore, for rashes that fail to emerge and recede, or are prematurely suppressed, this formula saves lives: Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Tiandong (Asparagi Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Chenyi (Bombyx Batryticatus), Gualouren (Trichosanthis Semen), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) taken separately; if not purged but Qi is excess, use Dahuang to smooth Qi; for asthma, add Douding (Stemonae Radix) and Tinglizi (Lepidii Semen); for abdominal pain, add Zhike; for fiery diarrhea, Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) is essential; for cough, combine Suzi and Jinhua (Adenophorae Radix); for sore throat, use Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma) and Shandougen (Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix); this formula brings the dead back to life.
