Xue Lizhai treated a pregnant woman who was weeping for no reason, which was cured by using Dazao Tang (Jujube Decoction). When the condition recurred later, it was cured by using Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) with added Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) and Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus).
Chen Liangfu said: The wife of Mr. Zheng Huqing, an elder in my hometown, Huang Shi, was four to five months pregnant. During the day, she appeared miserable and sorrowful, shedding tears several times, as if possessed by spirits. Both physicians and shamans were consulted, but to no avail. Chen Liangfu was fourteen years old at the time, studying Confucian classics. Upon hearing of this case, seeing Zheng Huqing in a panic without a solution, Chen Liangfu informed Mr. Guan Botong, stating that his ancestors had mentioned this condition, named Zangzao Beishang (Visceral Dryness and Sorrow), which could not be cured without Dazao Tang (Jujube Decoction). Zheng Huqing borrowed the prescription, was very pleased upon seeing it, administered the medicine according to the syndrome, and was cured after one dose. (From *Liangfang*.)
Xue Lizhai treated a pregnant woman suffering from heart pain (not true Xin Tong/Heart Pain), accompanied by vexatious heat and thirst, which was cured by using Baizhu San (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Powder). Later, due to food stagnation, the pain returned, with distension and fullness in the chest and abdomen, and tenderness upon pressure, caused by dietary accumulation. Ren Shen Yangwei Tang (Ginseng Stomach-Nourishing Decoction) was used; after administration, there was no tenderness upon pressure. This indicated injury to the Spleen and Stomach, so Liu Junzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) was used to tonify them, resulting in recovery.
A pregnant woman suffered from pain in the heart and abdomen, distension in the chest and hypochondrium, acid regurgitation, and loss of appetite, indicating Qi stagnation in the Liver and Spleen. Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) with Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), and Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) cured the condition. Later, due to anger, the pain persisted, fetal movement occurred, appetite was lost, complexion was greenish-yellow, the Liver pulse was wiry and tight, and the Spleen pulse was wiry and long, indicating Liver Qi invading the Earth (Spleen/Stomach). Liu Junzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) cured the condition.
A pregnant woman suffered from pain in the heart and abdomen, fetal Qi attacking upward, expectoration of phlegm, nausea, and reduced food intake, indicating Spleen deficiency with Qi stagnation generating Phlegm. Liu Junzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) with Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) was used; various symptoms gradually subsided, and food intake increased. Subsequently, Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) with Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) stabilized the condition. Later, due to anger, Qi distension occurred in both hypochondria, pain in the Zhongwan (CV12) area, aversion to cold, and vomiting. Liu Junzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) with Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) was used, curing the patient after one dose.
Zhu Danxi treated Lady Sun, who, due to attending a recent funeral, was exposed to foul miasma injuring the fetus. She suffered from abdominal pain so severe that her hand could not touch the area, fever, and lack of appetite. The treatment required calming the fetus and resolving Qi stagnation. Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) 2 qian, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) each 2 qian, Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1.5 qian, Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) 0.5 qian, and Zhi Gancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 0.4 fen were used. With three zhen of water, two large slices of Zhugen (Ramie Root) were decocted first until reduced to two zhen. The Zhugen was removed, and the other herbs were added, decocted until reduced to one zhen, and taken hot, resulting in complete recovery.
Wu Yang treated the aunt of Wang Boyu. The aunt suffered from urgent pain in the lower abdomen, facial itching, and aversion to cold. Physician Lu Wan diagnosed it as Zhuantong Bao (Fetal Distortion/Cystocele). Wu Yang said: Incorrect, this is a Yin Syndrome. The patient's relative said: If the disease originated internally, your words are indeed correct. Mr. Lu left in indignation, saying sternly: Dr. Wu will kill your aunt. Wu Yang immediately moxa-ed the Qihai (CV6) acupoint and administered Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction). Soon, the illness subsided, leaving Mr. Lu speechless. (From *Taihan Ji*.)
