Wang Tao of the Tang Dynasty stated: In recent years, there have been patients suffering from "Tianxing Faban Chuang" (Heavenly Epidemic Erythema and Pustules), where rashes cover the head, face, and entire body within a very short time. The condition resembles a fire burn, with pustules containing white serous fluid; they rupture and regenerate continuously. Without treatment, death occurs within a few days. After recovery, the scars remain dark and take a year to fade. This is caused by malignant toxic qi. It can be treated by washing the affected area with water boiled with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) using cotton cloth. Boiling it in wine yields better results, but the patient may experience unbearable restlessness and pain. He also recorded: During the Jianwu era of the Eastern Han Dynasty, when the Nanyang army campaigned against the Lu tribes, this disease was initially called "Lu Chuang" (Barbarian Sore). Physicians deliberated on treatments and recommended applying high-quality honey to the sores and wiping them multiple times with honey-decocted Shengma. (From *Waitai Miyao*)
Miao Zhongchun treated the daughter of Gu Fengchang, who suffered from "Ziyun Feng" (Purple Cloud Wind, a type of erythematous pruritic skin condition) on her arm. He used powder from Xixiancao (Siegesbeckiae Herba), Can'erzi (Xanthii Fructus), and Xionghuang (Realgar), mixed with pure lacquer to form pills. Some suspected the toxicity of lacquer and strongly opposed it. Nevertheless, the cure was ultimately achieved with this medicine. (To prepare the lacquer pill, raw crab yellow is stirred into the lacquer, liquefying it for medicinal use. From *Guang Biji*)
A woman suffered from erythema with itching. Her pulse was floating and rapid. She took two doses of Renshen Baidu San (Ginseng Detoxification Powder), which slightly alleviated her symptoms. Subsequently, she took Xiaofeng San (Wind-Dispersing Powder) for four doses, stabilizing her condition. Finally, she recovered after taking Chaihu Qinggan San (Bupleurum Liver-Clearing Powder).
Another woman suffered from erythema with itching and pain, accompanied by constipation and a deep, solid pulse. She was treated with Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), and Huaihua (Sophorae Flos), which relieved her constipation. She then took Siwu Erlian Tang (Four Substances with Two Coptis Decoction), leading to the healing of the sores.

A man suffered from erythema with red-purple lesions and pain, fever preferring cold, and a deep, solid pulse. His symptoms receded dramatically after one dose of Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Universal Salvation Powder). He then recovered after taking Jingfang Baidu San (Schizonepeta and Saposhnikovia Detoxification Powder) added with Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) for four doses.
Lu Shiming, a Juren degree holder, developed chest erythema due to overexertion during his journey to the metropolitan examination. His lesions were red and painful, accompanied by headache, fever, fatigue, poor appetite, alternating loose stools and constipation, and dark, difficult urination. This indicated damage to Yuanqi (Primary Qi) from labor, causing deficient fire to move internally. He was administered Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). His symptoms receded dramatically after one dose, he recovered after two doses, and fully stabilized after several more doses.
A fourteen-year-old maiden, whose Tianmi (Menstruation) had not yet begun, developed red patches on her body with itching and pain. Her left Guan pulse was wiry and rapid, indicating Liver Fire and Blood Heat. She was treated with Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), and Danpi (Moutan Cortex), resulting in a cure. If caused by anger, the same prescription is appropriate.
A man presented with red halos on his face that occasionally swelled, similarly affecting his arms and hands. Scratching produced white scales. After taking medicines for Leprosy (Dafengbing), he experienced internal heat and fatigue, with a large and deficient pulse. This indicated deficiency of Yuanqi (Primary Qi) and further injury to Yin Blood. He recovered using Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) and Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction).
A woman’s body resembled Dansu (Erysipelas). Scratching broke the skin like in Leprosy, accompanied by fever, thirst, dizziness, and worsening symptoms in the late afternoon. This belonged to Wind-Fire and Blood Dryness in the Liver Meridian. She recovered using Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder).
Another woman’s body resembled Dansu (Erysipelas). Scratching caused oozing, accompanied by fever, thirst, dizziness, and worsening symptoms in the late afternoon. She recovered using Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) added with fried Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium). She later recovered using Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Danpi (Moutan Cortex).
A woman suffered from the aforementioned condition and mistakenly took medicines for Leprosy (Dafengbing). Her skin broke and wept fluid, causing irritability, thirst, and dizziness. Although resembling Wind Syndrome, her six pulses were surging and rapid, heavily affecting the Heart, Liver, and Spleen. It was determined that "Wind arises from Fire"; this was caused by anger stirring Liver Fire, leading to Blood Dryness generating Wind, rather than true Wind Syndrome. She was given Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) and Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) to clear Liver Fire, nourish Spleen Blood, and generate Kidney Water, resulting in a cure.
A woman suffered from the aforementioned condition, with non-healing broken sores from scratching, poor appetite, and fatigue. This indicated Liver and Spleen deficiency with Yin Deficiency generating Empty Heat. She first took Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) added with Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and fried Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), gradually restoring her Yuanqi (Primary Qi). She then took Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), curing the sores.
A woman suffered from Chiyou Feng (Red Wandering Wind, a migratory erythema). She had evening fever and severe itching. She used herbs to clear Liver Fire and nourish Blood. Disbelieving this, she took medicines for Leprosy (Dafengbing), resulting in arm pain and tendon contraction. She then took phlegm-resolving and Qi-regulating herbs, leading to flaccidity and weakness in all four limbs. Another woman with the same condition took wind-dispersing herbs multiple times and washed with decoctions, resulting in abdominal distension and death.
A young woman had early menstruation, preceded by red halos, slight swelling, and itching. Anger exacerbated the redness and itching. Taking wind-dispersing herbs caused further swelling at the site. Phlebotomy released much purple blood, yet the itching intensified. The diagnosis was Liver Fire and Blood Dryness, worsened by wind herbs injuring the Blood. She first took Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) to clear Liver Fire and benefit Liver Blood, reducing redness and swelling. She then took Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) to nourish Kidney Water and generate Liver Wood, taking over fifty doses of each to recover. Later, due to anger, her menstruation did not stop, accompanied by fever, thirst, and red itching at the lesion site. She first took Jiawei Xiao Chaihu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction) for two doses, stopping all symptoms. She then took Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) to stabilize.
