Zhai Lizhi was accustomed to drinking alcohol. He developed nodules all over his body; scratching them produced white scales, with symptoms being more severe on the upper body. His face and eyes were swollen and ulcerated, with scabs forming at Chengjiang (CV24). His eyes were red and tearing, and the pulse at the left Guan position was surging, rapid, and forceful. Some treated it as Leprosy (Lifeng), resulting in profuse discharge of pus. This was caused by Liver Fire and Damp-Toxin. A single dose of Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) added with Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) resolved all symptoms completely after four doses. However, a patch of cyan-white nebula appeared in each eye, which also belonged to Liver Fire. After two more doses, the nebula disappeared, and he was cured using Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill).
A scholar developed nodules on his body, accompanied by intermittent red halos, aversion to cold, and fever. After taking medicines for Leprosy, his eyebrows fell out and tendons became contracted. Later, the nodules gradually ulcerated, with high fever occurring in the late afternoon. The Liver pulse was wiry and surging, while other pulses were rapid but deficient. This indicated Blood Deficiency and Wind-Heat in the Liver Meridian. Initially, Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) was combined with Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction), adding Danpi (Moutan Cortex) and Jiuchao Hei Zhi (Wine-fried and Charred Gardeniae Fructus). Subsequently, Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) was administered with Renshen (Ginseng Root), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis). After two months of treatment, the sores healed completely, and his eyebrows gradually regrew. The condition recurred due to anger, and he was cured using Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), and Muzei (Equiseti Herba). Later, fatigue-induced fever occurred, and mistakenly using cold-natured medicines caused intermittent itching and evening red halos. In the morning, Bushen Yiqi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) was given with Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), and Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma); in the afternoon, Jiaban Bawei Wan (Modified Eight-Ingredient Pill) was used, leading to recovery. After consuming roasted or fried foods, the nodules reappeared with turbid urine, and the Guan pulse was slippery, large, and forceful. Bushen Yiqi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) added with Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) resolved all symptoms.
A man developed nodules in autumn, which gradually elevated over two months with red halos, and black blood discharged after another month. This was caused by Wind-Heat and Blood Deficiency. Jiwei Qianghuo Tang (Nine-Ingredient Notopterygium Decoction) was used first; once the Wind-Heat subsided, Bushen Yiqi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) was used to cure him. Due to sexual indiscretion, night sweats, evening fever, dry mouth, expectoration, fatigue, and reluctance to speak occurred. Bushen Yiqi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) and Jiaban Bawei Wan (Modified Eight-Ingredient Pill) brought about a rapid cure.
A woman had nodules all over her body with itching. Applying toxic-drawing ointments caused ulcers with weeping, accompanied by chills, fever, hypochondriac pain, dysuria, and irregular menstruation. Taking wind-dispelling agents led to emaciation and poor appetite. This was Liver Fire causing Blood Dryness generating Wind. Previous medicines further damaged Liver Blood. Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) was administered for over twenty doses, followed by Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) for another twenty doses, gradually resolving symptoms. Finally, Liuhuang Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) was used for regulation and recovery. Many such cases have resulted in death due to the use of wind-dispelling medicines.
A man suffered from intermittent nodules that itched into ulcers with profuse pus. Chills and fever were present. Qianghuo Danggui San (Notopterygium and Angelica Powder) stopped the itching, and Yi Lao Qufeng Wan (Master Yi’s Wind-Dispelling Pill) prevented recurrence. After drinking distilled spirits, red halos appeared, along with urinary and fecal retention, mouth and tongue sores, heat, thirst, and restlessness. Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Unblocking the Interior and Exterior Powder) restored normal bowel and bladder function. However, due to dry mouth, fatigue, and anorexia, Qiwei Baizhu San (Seven-Ingredient Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) without Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) was used for four doses, curing him.
A man had widespread nodular itching, worsening with exertion. Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) were used as sovereign herbs, assisted by Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Chao Qin (Fried Scutellariae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root), leading to recovery. Subsequent use of Bushen Yiqi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) prevented recurrence.
A man suffered from nodules, itching, and fever, with weak constitution and qi. His breath from the mouth and nose was hot, and he preferred cold drinks, indicating External Pathogens. Xiaofeng San (Wind-Dispersing Powder) for two doses resolved the external pathogens. For subsequent fatigue and poor appetite, Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root), and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) strengthened the Spleen. Bushen Yiqi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) without Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), plus Fuling (Poria) and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), cured him.
A man had nodules mostly on the buttocks and legs, with severe itching upon exertion and yellow urine. Taking Baidu San (Defeat Toxin Powder) and Scutellaria/Coptis formulas caused local pain and insomnia. This was Spleen Qi Sinking. Bushen Yiqi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) added with Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), and Chaohei Huangbai (Charred Phellodendri Cortex) cured him. Generally, diseases that are normal during the day but fatigued in the late afternoon, worsened by labor, and normal in the morning, indicate Yuan Qi (Primal Qi) Deficiency, requiring tonification with the aforementioned formula.
A man had dark-colored, itchy nodules discharging black blood, worsening from late afternoon to night, with legs swelling by day and subsiding by night. This was attributed to Qi and Blood Deficiency with Heat. Bushen Yiqi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) was taken in the morning, and Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) in the evening, leading to recovery.
A scholar developed generalized itching and nodules after examinations. This was due to Labor injuring Yuan Qi (Primal Qi), internal blazing of Yin Fire, and autumn cold constricting the pores, trapping internal heat. Bushen Yiqi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) added with Fuling (Poria), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) cured him. Upon relapse due to overwork, he listened to others and took wind-dispelling and toxin-defeating medicines, resembling Leprosy. Fever, thirst, fatigue, and anorexia ensued. Bushen Yiqi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with doubled Renshen (Ginseng Root), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), plus Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), and Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), cured him.
A woman had widespread nodules with fever and itching. Internal use of toxin-defeating and wind-dispelling medicines, combined with external application of corrosive agents, caused ulcers with weeping pus, emaciation, reduced appetite, chills, fever, thirst for cold drinks, floating and rapid pulse that felt choppy upon pressure. This indicated repeated injury to Yuan Qi (Primal Qi). Qiwei Baizhu San (Seven-Ingredient Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) for several doses stopped the thirst and improved appetite. Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) added with Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Danpi (Moutan Cortex) dried the pus. Liujun Zi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) with Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), and Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) promoted wound contraction. Continued use of Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Danpi (Moutan Cortex) completed the cure.
A woman developed chills, fever, and red halos due to anger. Wind-dispelling medicines induced nodules. Scarification released blood, causing local swelling, fever, and headache. Both internal and external treatments used wind-dispelling agents, resulting in weeping pus. Consumption of Huashe Jiu (Flower Snake Wine) worsened symptoms, adding evening fever, irritability, thirst, insomnia, and a surging pulse that felt empty upon pressure. This was Blood Loss causing Irritability. Bu Xue Danggui Tang (Tonify Blood Danggui Decoction) provided slight relief. Six Gentlemen Decoction with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) for several doses enabled sleep. For fatigue, dizziness, and poor appetite, Bushen Yiqi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) added with Manjingzi (Vitexis Fructus) helped slightly. Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) with Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), with doubled Renshen (Ginseng Root) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), for over thirty doses allowed walking. Full recovery occurred after another month.
A woman with a quick temper and frequent anger had irregular menstruation, internal heat, bitter taste, and itchy nodules. Toxin-defeating medicines caused weeping pus, heat, thirst, dizziness, and worsening in the late afternoon. Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) gradually improved the condition. Severe anger later caused flooding menstruation and tearing eyes. Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) added with Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) cured her within a few doses. Over a year later, white spots enlarged on the left foot, arm, and wrist, with scratching producing white scales, internal heat, night sweats, and bi-monthly menstruation. Anger triggered various symptoms: chills/headache, anorexia/vomiting, chest/breast distension, abdominal pain, hematuria, dysuria, or leukorrhea. These were manifestations of Liver Wood overacting on Spleen Earth, with Yuan Qi (Primal Qi) Deficiency causing variable symptoms. Bushen Yiqi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) added with Chaohei Shanzhi (Charred Gardeniae Fructus) and Jia Wei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction) for half a year cured her. Subsequent anger caused red halos; treating as wind disease and using Yuxian Dan (Immortal Immortality Pill) for nodules led to red swelling, itching, pus, and external corrosives. Chills, fever, thirst, and consumption of Huma (Sesame Seed) and Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix) worsened the condition. Generalized itching, eyebrow loss, weeping pus, cough, fever, and bi-monthly menses were treated with Liujun Zi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Danpi (Moutan Cortex) for a month. Heat and thirst subsided slightly, appetite remained low. Another month of medication eased the cough. Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) added with Danpi (Moutan Cortex) for over twenty doses dried the lesions and regularized menstruation. Food stagnation causing diarrhea and anorexia was treated with Liujun Zi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction), gradually restoring diet. Anger-induced fever, thirst, lesion pain, and continuous menstruation were managed with Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). Complete recovery was achieved with Liujun Zi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction).
A twenty-year-old woman had early or delayed menstruation. Anger caused red halos or nodules lasting six to seven days. Wind-dispelling medicines caused itching, thirst, ulcers, and weeping pus. It was stated: "This is Liver Fire generating Wind; continuing this medicine will cause tendon contraction." She did not heed this advice and later developed hand contractures. Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) and Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) for a month significantly reduced heat and thirst. Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) was added for another month, reducing pus. Four Gentlemen Decoction with Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Danpi (Moutan Cortex) for over twenty doses restored finger mobility. Anger-induced fever and continuous menstruation, with restless twitching during sleep, were treated with Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) added with Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), leading to recovery. Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), and Danpi (Moutan Cortex) formed scabs. Removing Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis) for regulation allowed Yuan Qi (Primal Qi) restoration and drying of scabs.
A woman often suffered from urticarial itching. Anger-induced fever transformed it into nodules with severe swelling. Zhizi Qinggan San (Gardenia Clearing Liver Powder) cured it. Later, anger caused moving red halos, self-scarification releasing purple blood, bone-deep itching, burning heat resembling Leprosy. Wind-dispelling medicines failed. Danggui Buxue Tang (Danggui Tonifying Blood Decoction) for four doses stopped the heat. Shengyu Tang (Holy Salvation Decoction) and Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) completed the cure.
A woman had nodules resembling Erysipelas, with variable itching and pain, ulcerating upon scratching with weeping pus, fever, thirst, irritability, dizziness, and worsening in the late afternoon. This was Blood Deficiency with Internal Heat. Danggui Yin (Danggui Drink) added with Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) cured her.
Another woman with similar symptoms had limb pain, unclear head/eyes, spontaneous and night sweats, irregular menstruation, abdominal pain, poor appetite, and fatigue. Ren Shen Jingjie San (Ginseng and Schizonepeta Powder) followed by Xiao Yao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) cured her.
A woman developed nodules, chills, and fever due to indignation. This was Liver Fire. Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) cured her. Subsequent bitter taste, hypochondriac pain, and dysuria were fully resolved with the same formula.
A woman with similar symptoms had fever and nighttime delirium. This was Heat in the Blood Level. Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) stabilized her. Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) added with Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Danpi (Moutan Cortex) reduced fever, and Xiao Yao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) completed the cure.
A woman often had nodules with occasional itching. Xiaofeng San (Wind-Dispersing Powder) caused ulcers upon scratching, with persistent itching spreading to the head and face. Qianghuo Danggui San (Notopterygium and Angelica Powder) stopped the itching immediately. Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) cleared the heat. Danggui Yin (Danggui Drink) healed the sores. Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) with Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) prevented recurrence.
