Xue Lizhai treated a male patient whose face was red and who felt thirsty. He frequently developed small sores on his face accompanied by itching. After taking wind-dispelling herbs, red rashes appeared all over his body. After drinking Baihuashe Jiu (White Flower Snake Wine), the red halos became more severe.
Following full-body Bianci (scarification therapy) and taking Xiaofeng San (Wind-Dispersing Powder), he developed fever and thirst, drinking water incessantly. Xue Lizhai diagnosed this as Liver channel blood deficiency with wind-heat, and prescribed Zhizi Qinggan San (Gardenia Decoction to Clear the Liver) along with Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) decocted and taken orally. The fever and thirst gradually ceased, and the sores began to scab. Subsequently, using Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) and Dihuang Wan, the scabs gradually fell off. After another month or so, the sores healed gradually.
Another male patient had acne on his face and occasionally developed small sores. After taking Xiaofeng San, the sores worsened. After taking Yuxian Dan (Immortal Meeting Pill), he experienced generalized redness and itching. Continuing to take the previous medications led to fever and swelling.
After another ten-plus days of medication, the sores ulcerated and oozed fluid, leaving him emaciated with visible bones. Initially, using Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), and Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), four doses resulted in slight improvement in appetite. Then, using Bazhen Tang, he recovered after several doses.
A third male patient had a preference for rich foods, roasted items, strong wine, and spicy substances. He developed generalized sores that were intensely itchy. Taking Xiaofeng San-like formulas caused red halos to appear. Following scarification bleeding, the itching intensified. Applying detoxifying agents resulted in individual sores weeping pus and serum, with eyebrows gradually falling out and redness/itching worsening. This was attributed to accumulated heat in the Spleen channel damaging the blood. Initially, Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhino Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) added with Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) was used. As the weeping stopped, Bazhen Tang added with Shanzhi (Gardenia Fruit) and Danpi (Moutan Cortex) was administered, leading to eyebrow regrowth. Due to improper diet causing chest and abdominal distension, poor appetite, and occasional hematochezia, Wuyi Yigong San (Five Agents Extraordinary Efficacy Powder) added with Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) was used to restore appetite, followed by Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) to stop the bleeding. Finally, Yigong San added with Danggui and Danpi was used to achieve recovery.
A fourth female patient had an irritable temperament and frequent anger, with early menstruation. She suffered from sores that were red and itchy; scratching them caused continuous oozing of pus. Taking wind-dispelling herbs worsened the sores. Drinking Huashe Jiu (Flower Snake Wine) led to convulsions in the four limbs and loss of eyebrows. Initially, Chaihu Qinggan San (Bupleurum Decoction to Clear the Liver) added with Gouteng (Uncaria Ramulus) was given for several doses. Then, Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) added with Gouteng was used, leading to gradual improvement of various symptoms. Finally, Yilao Qufeng Wan (Yilao Wind-Dispersing Pill) brought stability.
A fifth female patient, aged fourteen, had a bean-sized mass at her soft wrist area, half embedded in the flesh, appearing reddish-purple and extremely painful. Various medicines were ineffective. A practitioner used four taels of mercury and one sheet of white paper, kneaded until soft, dipped in mercury, and rubbed the lesion. It fell off naturally after three days, resulting in a cure (from *Li Lou Guaizheng*).
Zhu Danxi treated Lady Zhu, in her thirties, who had long suffered from Yin Zhen (urticaria/hives). Her body felt numb and her complexion was purplish. He prescribed Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Universal Rescue Powder) added with Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), ground into an extremely fine powder. One qian per dose was decocted in one and a half cups of water with ginger juice (made pungent) and drunk hot.
Wang Shishan treated a man over sixty years old, who was thin with a sallow-purple complexion. He often experienced generalized itching at night; scratching produced a sensation of steaming heat, and the skin and muscles raised like bean grains. When the itching stopped, the heat dissipated, and the raised lumps subsided. Physicians had used Wuyao Shunqi San (Aucklandia Smooth Qi Powder) and Shengma Heshi San (Cimicifuga Harmonizing Qi Powder) without effect. Upon diagnosis, the pulse was found to be fine, soggy, and slightly rapid. Wang stated: "This is blood deficiency with blood heat." The previous use of qi-smoothing and blood-harmonizing agents was unjust punishment and inappropriate treatment. He then prescribed Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Baijili (Tribuli Fructus), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix), and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) decocted and taken orally. Recovery occurred after one month.
An elderly patient suffered from rash, which was slightly red, itchy, and accompanied by fever. Ren Shen Baidu San (Ginseng Rescue the Collapsed Powder) was used; slight improvement occurred after two doses. Full recovery was achieved with Buzhong Yiqi Tang added with Huangqin and Shanzhi.
A female patient experienced generalized itching, worse in autumn and winter. Her pulse was floating and rapid. This was diagnosed as wind pathogen lodging in the skin, named Xue Feng (Blood Wind). She drank Xiaofeng San and applied Shechuangzi San (Cnidium Seed Powder) externally, resulting in slight relief. Subsequently, Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) added with Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) cured her after several doses. Another female patient suffered similarly, worse in summer, with a surging-large pulse, treated with Heshouwu San (Polygoni Multiflori Powder). Another female patient had red macules with itching; scratching caused ulceration and chronic weeping. Internal administration of Danggui Yin (Angelica Drink) and external application of Shechuangzi San both led to recovery. Yet another female patient did not respond to various medicines but recovered after several doses of Sisheng San (Four Freshness Powder). Generally, women have deficient constitutions; when wind pathogen lodges in the skin, white rashes form. When cold-dampness lodges in the muscles and stagnates to generate heat, red rashes form. Although the colors differ, the treatment methods are similar. Whenever sweating occurs, one should not lie exposed outdoors or bathe. The classic states: "Exposure to dampness after sweating generates acnes and prickly heat." Leigong said: "For generalized wind rashes, mix raw Cebaiye (Platycladi Cacumen) with wine." This has been verified repeatedly.
