Xue Lizhai treated a male patient with generalized pruritus, which later developed into sores oozing fluid. He presented with chills and aversion to cold, rough and wrinkled skin, gradual loss of eyebrows, constipation, and scanty dark urine. This was attributed to Lung Fire (Lung Heat). After four doses of Buxie Xier Tang (Tonify Qi and Drain Ying Decoction), his symptoms gradually subsided. However, he remained fatigued with aversion to cold and scanty clear urine, indicating that the pathogenic factor had departed but the healthy Qi was deficient. He was treated with Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) combined with Huanji San (Skin-Transforming Powder). Over half a year, his Yuan Qi (Original Qi) recovered, and all symptoms resolved. In mid-autumn, he suddenly experienced loose stools and frequent urination, accompanied by fatigue, poor appetite, chills, and heavy body sensation. This was due to Dampness (Damp Evil) taking advantage of the deficiency. Dongyuan Yiwei Tang (Strengthen the Stomach Decoction) was prescribed for two doses, resulting in immediate relief. He continued with the previous medications and was fully recovered after more than three months of regulation.
Another male patient presented with red eyes, generalized pruritus and pain, and white scales appearing upon scratching. This was diagnosed as Yin Deficiency of the Liver and Lung. Due to the mistaken use of drying wind-dispelling agents, he developed a red nose, purplish complexion, and papules on the body that bled when scratched. He was given Shengma Tang (Cimicifuga Decoction) administered with Xieqing Wan (Drain the Green Pill) several times, followed by Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) for several doses. His facial and nasal redness gradually faded, and the papules diminished. Subsequently, Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) was used with added Ginseng Radix [Note: Original text missing character, likely Baizhu or similar], Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), along with Huanji San. Each prescription was taken over a hundred times. Fortunately, being young and compliant with medical advice, he made a full recovery.
A female patient experienced generalized pruritus in the late afternoon. Both internal and external treatments using toxic-clearing and wind-dispelling agents resulted in profuse oozing of pus and fluid. She suffered from morning chills and afternoon fever, resembling Leprosy (Li Feng). She was treated with Buzhong Yiqi Tang added with Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis) and subsequently with Jiawei Xiaoyao San added with Chuanxiong Rhizome, leading to her cure.
Another female patient presented with red palms, pruritus, fever, dizziness, and thirst, worsening in the late afternoon. After taking wind-dispelling and heat-clearing drugs, red marks appeared on her skin, and her menstruation was delayed. Jiawei Xiaoyao San with doubled Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) stopped the fever and relieved the itching. Then, Siwu Tang was used with added Chaihu, Renshen (Ginseng Radix), [missing herb], Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), and Fuling (Poria), which resolved the dizziness and thirst. A further course of Siwu Tang added with Renshen, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling, and Zhizi eliminated the red halos.
A male patient suffered from pruritus that broke into sores resembling Leprosy. After taking Yuxian Dan (Yuxian Pill), he developed fever, thirst, and constipation. His pulse was deep and solid, especially at the right Guan position, indicating Heat accumulation internally. Huanglian Neishu Tang (Coptis Internal Purging Decoction) was first used to promote bowel movement. Then, Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Unblocking the Intestines Powder) without Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) was used to stop the fever and thirst. Finally, Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) healed the sores.
A male patient with Spleen and Kidney Qi Deficiency and Blood Heat experienced generalized pruritus, often preferring hot baths. Later, he developed sores oozing fluid; wind-dispelling medicines aggravated the condition, causing redness or whiteness in lesions and visual disturbances with itching. Huma San (Sesame Seed Powder) and Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) were used first for recovery. The following year, pruritus recurred on both thighs, lower abdomen, neck, and nape. Six Sheng San (Four Generations Powder) and Liuwei Wan cured him again.
A female patient with early menstruation experienced chills, fever, and pruritus triggered by labor or anger. Wind-dispelling and fire-draining medicines caused spontaneous pruritus and fever even without stress, accompanied by phlegm-wheezing and shortness of breath. Phlegm-resolving and Qi-clearing medicines led to fatigue, poor appetite, chest stuffiness, and skin eruptions. Detoxifying medicines caused profuse oozing. Leprosy medicines caused dry mouth and thirst, fear of drinking water, delayed menstruation, and twitching between the eyebrows. After another month, eyebrows fell out, and menstruation became continuous. This was diagnosed as Wind-Heat clashing in the Heart and Liver meridians, where Metal (Lung) could not control Wood (Liver), Wood overacted on Earth (Spleen) failing to control blood, and Liver Fire was hyperactive failing to store blood. Following the classic principle "Water generates Wood," she took Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) in the morning to nourish Kidney Water and generate Liver Blood, and Jiawei Xiaoyao San in the evening to clear Liver Fire and generate Liver Blood. After more than a month, symptoms improved. Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) with Chuanxiong, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) were added. After another month, menstruation lasted ten days. Two months later, it occurred every fifty days. Then, Wuwei Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Extra-Efficacy Powder) with Danggui was taken in the evening for two months, resulting in cycles of forty days. Anger-induced chills/fever and menorrhagia with eyebrow twitching and a surging, rapid, wiry pulse (prominent in Liver/Spleen positions) were treated with Chaihu Zhizi San (Bupleurum and Gardenia Powder) for two doses to calm Liver Fire, and Wuwei Yigong San for two doses to tonify Spleen Qi. Fever ceased immediately, and bleeding stopped. Bazhen Tang with increased Renshen, Baizhu, and Dihuang Wan were used for two months, restoring regular cycles and eyebrow growth. Food stagnation causing abdominal distension/pain was treated with separate purgatives, leading to intractable diarrhea, heavy lower abdomen, and poor intake. Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) delivering Sishen Wan (Four Spirits Pill) stopped diarrhea after several doses. Buzhong Yiqi Tang with increased Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) resolved the heaviness. Later, mental exertion caused fever, indigestion, vomiting of saliva, and rising heat from the umbilicus with hunger-fevers. Liujunzi Tang with Paojiang (Roasted Ginger) was used; thick rice soup provided relief during febrile episodes. After two months, daily use of Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction) and Buzhong Yiqi Tang led to recovery.
In autumn, a female patient had limb pruritus, intermittent chills/fever, severe afternoon fever, bitter taste, craving sour foods, early menstruation, greenish complexion turning red with fever. Strict use of heat-clearing and blood-cooling medicines caused papules and worsened red pruritus. Heat-clearing and detoxifying medicines led to oozing sores. It was diagnosed as Liver-Spleen Blood Deficiency with Dryness. Disbelieving this, she continued treating sores, worsening her condition with fatigue and anorexia. Buzhong Yiqi Tang, occasionally supplemented with Liujunzi Tang and Danggui, slightly restored Yuan Qi. Then, Bazhen Tang with increased Renshen, Baizhu, and reduced Chuanxiong, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), occasionally supplemented with Buzhong Yiqi Tang, gradually improved symptoms. Four Gentlemen Decoction supplemented with Jiawei Xiaoyao San reduced oozing over two months. Sores crusted over after another month. Anger-induced chills/fever, abdominal distension, and poor appetite with severe local lesions were treated with Liujunzi Tang added with Zhizi and Chaihu, primarily using Four Gentlemen Decoction, healing the sores. Anger-induced menorrhagia, fever, thirst, and painful bleeding sores were treated with Chaihu Qinggan San (Bupleurum Liver-Clearing Powder), stopping fever and pain. Four Gentlemen Decothesis promoted crusting. Bazhen Tang with Zhizi and Mudanpi completed the cure.
A female patient with generalized pruritus, oozing sores, fever, crawling sensations, and irregular menstruation was first treated with Shengma Tang delivering Xiayi Wan (Drain One Pill), instantly relieving fever and itching. Jiawei Xiaoyao San regulated menstruation. Huanji Wan healed the sores. Anger-induced continuous menstruation and bone/joint pain were cured by Qinjiao Dihuang Tang (Gentian and Rehmannia Decoction) and Yilao Qufeng Wan (Master Yi’s Wind-Dispelling Pill).
A quiet, depressed female patient with delayed menstruation and generalized pruritus took wind-dispelling and fire-clearing medicines, breaking skin into weeping sores with intensified itching. Xiaofeng San (Wind-Expelling Powder) type medicines caused eyebrow twitching and hair loss. Yuxian San caused ulceration of lesions, cough, fever, decreased food intake, and early menstruation. Diagnosed as Liver-Spleen Depression-Anger with Blood Dryness, exacerbated by previous drugs, she was treated with Si Jun Zi Tang, Chuanxiong, Danggui, Zhizi, and Mudanpi. Food intake improved, and cough stopped after a month. Jiawei Xiaoyao San with Gouteng for twenty-plus doses stopped eyebrow twitching. Removing Gouteng and doubling Renshen, Baizhu, and Danggui healed sores after a month. Bazhen Tang with Zhizi and Mudanpi completed the cure.
A female patient with previous symptoms, oozing sores, fever/thirst, fatigue/chills, and difficult menstruation unhealed for a long time was diagnosed with Liver-Spleen Deficiency and Deficient Heat. Buzhong Yiqi Tang with Zhizi and Chuanxiong gradually restored Yuan Qi. Xiaoyao San healed the sores. Post-recovery Scabies caused generalized pruritus, papules, and oozing pus/blood. Mistaken use of Zuixian San mimicked Wind Syndrome. Bazhen Tang stabilized her. Shiquan Dabu Tang dried the lesions.
A female patient with late-afternoon pruritus, history of asceticism, Liver Depression-Anger, afternoon/internal fever, spontaneous/diaphoresis, amenorrhea, dry mouth/throat was treated with Guipi Tang for slight improvement. Jiawei Xiaoyao San for fifty-plus doses cured her.
A female patient with pruritus/fever worsening in late afternoon, red skin halos, and delayed menstruation was diagnosed with Blood Deficiency with Heat. Xiaoyao Tang with doubled Shudi stopped fever and itching. Siwu Tang with Chaihu, Renshen, [missing herb], Zhi Gancao, and Fuling regulated and cured her.
A female patient with long-term depression and previous symptoms (oozing sores) took Lianqiao Xiaodu San (Forsythia Detoxification Powder), causing anorexia/chest stuffiness. Qingqi Huatan Wan (Clear Qi Resolve Phlegm Pill) caused vomiting phlegm. Qingre Huatan Wan (Clear Heat Resolve Phlegm Pill) caused vexation/fever/chills, [cold/hot limbs - text says 'hot' but context implies cold/exterior constraint], red face, and large weak pulse. This was Spleen-Stomach Deficiency with Deficient Cold repelling Yang Qi outward. Liujunzi Tang with Paojiang improved symptoms and appetite. Siwu Tang aided recovery. Four Gentlemen Decoction (1 qian each) and Siwu Tang (0.5 qian each) completely cured her.
A female patient had itchy palms in autumn with white scales. Labor/anger triggered chills/fever, generalized pruritus, and papules. Treated as Wind Syndrome with Huashe (Flower Snake) internally, Sulfur externally, and Yuxian Dan internally, her heat/thirst worsened, and menstruation stopped. Diagnosed as Spleen-Liver Blood Dryness generating Wind, Jiawei Xiaoyao San reduced heat/thirst. Bazhen Tang, Chaihu, and Zhizi alleviated lesions. Anger-induced fever/costal pain and swelling were treated with Jiawei Xiaoyao San for four doses. Si Jun Zi Tang, Chuanxiong, Danggui, Zhizi, and Mudanpi cured her after six months.
A male patient with generalized pruritus unresponsive to other medicines had a floating, choppy pulse. Treatment focused on Blood-generating herbs with occasional Qi-tonifying herbs for one hundred doses, leading to recovery.
Song Sheng had generalized pruritus, broken sores oozing fluid, and a floating-rapid pulse, caused by Wind-Heat in the Hand-Foot Yangming Meridians. Ren Shen Bai Du San (Ginseng Detoxifying Decoction) combined with Siwu Tang added Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) was taken. Externally, Songxiang (Rosin), Kufan (Alum), and Qingfen (Calomel) mixed in Sesame Oil was applied for over a month, curing him. Another patient with a deep pulse was treated with the above formula plus Dahuang, improving gradually, then stabilized with Ren Shen Bai Du San.
Huang Jinfang treated a monk with abnormal body itch unresponsive to wind-dispelling/detoxifying drugs. Pulse was calm on the left, but the Spleen pulse surged abnormally. He reported tasteless diet and bloating with belching. This was unclear internal Qi with Turbid Evil overflowing into collaterals. Fuling (3 qian), Banxia (2 qian), Muxiang (0.8 fen), Guangpi (0.5 fen), and Chuan Houpo (1 qian) taken twice daily cured him.
