Zi Hezi treated a fifteen-year-old girl who suffered from damp tinea (damp-type fungal infection) between her thighs, extending three to four cun in length down to her knees. When the itching occurred, scratching or applying hot water and fire provided no relief; when the itching subsided, yellow fluid would exude, accompanied by unbearable pain. Treatments such as moxibustion, fumigation, and washing, along with herbs like Sulfur (Liu Huang), Sophora Root Bark (Ku Shen), Bombyx Batryticatus (Jiang Can), and Aconite Root (Yang Ti Gen), were all ineffective. The girl's parents came seeking treatment. Zi Hezi said, "If you follow my advice, the disease will be cured." The parents agreed. He sharpened a set of multiple needles and pricked over one hundred times on the affected itchy areas of the tinea until blood was fully discharged, then washed the area with salt water decoction. This process was repeated four times, after which the severe illness was finally eradicated. This method is not fully disclosed to later generations for fear that people might be misled by ordinary tinea remedies. When dampness invades the blood, bloodletting with bian stones (Bian Shi) is indispensable.
Xue Lizhai treated a patient whose body developed wind-like macules resembling tinea, which persisted for three years without healing. The patient experienced heat sensation in the five centers (palms, soles, and chest), with a flooding pulse that felt choppy upon deep pressure. This indicated a syndrome of blood deficiency. The treatment should primarily focus on nourishing blood, assisted by wind-dispelling herbs. If one solely attacks wind-toxin, the blood becomes more deficient and internal heat flares up further. The blood being scorched may lead to scrofula (Luoli) or consumptive diseases (Qie Zheng). Therefore, Xiaoyao Powder (Xiaoyao San) was administered for several doses, followed by Ren Shen Jingjie Powder (Ren Shen Jingjie San), resulting in recovery after more than twenty doses.
Liu Yuxi stated in *Chuan Xin Fang*: "In my youth, I once suffered from tinea, initially appearing on the neck, then spreading to the left ear, eventually becoming an oozing wet sore. I used drugs such as Mylabris (Ban Mao), Dog Gallbladder, and Peach Root, which only caused stinging sensations and worsened the sore. Accidentally, a medicine seller in this prefecture taught me to use Aloe Vera (Lu Hui) one liang, ground into powder, combined evenly with half a liang of roasted Licorice Root (Gan Cao). First, wash the tinea with warm sour rice water, then dry it with an old dry cloth, and apply the mixture of these two ingredients. It dried immediately and healed miraculously." (Cited from *Bencao Gangmu*)
Xue Lizhai treated a man with a bluish complexion and tinea on the inner thigh, which was red and itchy. After someone performed bloodletting with bian stones, he developed fever and pain; taking Xiao Feng San (Wind-Dispersing Powder) aggravated the condition; taking Yu Xian Dan increased fever and thirst. Upon continuing its use, pus and water flowed profusely. His pulse was flooding and rapid, especially at the left guan position. This indicated liver meridian blood deficiency with internal fire stirring, further damaged by treatments that injured the blood, leading to severe sores. Initially, Chai Hu Qing Gan San (Bupleurum Liver-Clearing Powder) was given for several doses, followed by Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Gardenia (Shan Zhi). Various symptoms gradually receded. Finally, Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) and Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) were used for over two months until recovery.
Zi Hezi treated a young boy suffering from widespread damp tinea covering his chest and abdomen, with yellow fluid exuding upon every scratch, lasting for more than a year. First, emetic pills made from powdered herbs were administered to induce vomiting. Next, Zhou Che Wan (Boat Cart Pill) and Jun Chuan San (River-Dredging Powder) were used to promote bowel movements three to five times. Then, Liang Ge San (Cooling the Chest Powder) with Natrii Sulfas (Pu Xiao) was taken; the decoction was sipped occasionally. Within a few days, he recovered.
