Zihe treated a child of about five or six years old. His playmates were hitting each other with sorghum stalks, and the inverted awns pierced into his throat. For several days, he could not eat porridge or take medicine, and the swelling was severe. The family informed Zihe. Zihe ordered water to be fetched. Following the incantation method from the Daoist scriptures, he bent his left middle and ring fingers to form the "Three Mountain Seal" (Sanshan Yin), placed a cup of water on it, pinched the pattern with his right hand forming the "Golden Spear Seal" (Jinqiang Yin), stood with his feet in a 'Ding' character shape, faced the sun or a lamp, and drew one breath of qi. Then, over the clean water cup, he chanted: "I take Laozi's east-flowing smoothness; Laozi receives the decree, to absorb the toxic water. Five Tu Great Emperor's honor, those who arrive and call upon me, each manifest the Emperor's body, swiftly as the law commands." He focused his mind, repeated the chant seven times, blew into the cup, stirred gently three times to set it. The child swallowed the water, saying, "I am fine." After three to five days, the swelling subsided, showing that magical methods are also not to be despised.
The *Yijian Zhi* records: When a child accidentally swallows rice awns stuck in the throat, unable to come out, it is called "Grain Thief" (Gu Zei). Only by pouring goose saliva into him will he recover. This is because goose saliva can dissolve grain thorns through mutual restriction.
A child accidentally swallowed a copper coin stuck in the throat, unable to go down. Various doctors could neither remove nor push it down. Dairen (Zihe) thought deeply and suddenly devised a plan. He took clean white paper, rolled it tightly like a chopstick, and cut the end crosswise with a knife to make it hook-shaped. He took another chopstick, bound a needle hook to its end so it would not detach, inserted it lightly into the throat to probe. Feeling the hook enter the coin's hole, he then inserted the red paper roll into the throat, opposing the hook tip. Feeling the hook tip enter the end of the paper roll without hindering the muscle, he lifted it out. (This method is strange yet stable, but without Zihe's agile mind and skillful hands, it might not have succeeded.)
Fang Xuepiao was at Bao Luyin's place when they discussed the *Famous Doctors' Cases*, mentioning that using South Borax to treat accidental swallowing of metal, and sheep shin bone ash for treatment, were both miraculous. A guest mentioned that using gluten ash to treat swallowed copper coins was very strange. Fang memorized it silently. Returning home, he happened to find a neighbor's child had swallowed a copper coin, choking and unable to move it up or down. In this critical moment, Fang immediately taught them the method. As soon as it was swallowed, the coin came out of the mouth. Its cleverness was such, perhaps guided by spirits? I record it here. The method involves placing gluten on a new tile, burning it to charcoal, grinding it into powder, and taking it warm mixed with boiling water. Coins not yet swallowed will exit from the mouth; those already swallowed will surely exit via stool. Recently, another method has been circulated: plugging raw garlic into the nose makes the coin emerge immediately, which is even simpler, though I have not tried it.
Zihe said: Once passing Zhulin, I saw a boy who had accidentally swallowed copper and iron objects, becoming ill and emaciated, unable to support his body with his legs. It was June or July, continuous rain, no firewood for cooking, starving for several days. One day, a neighbor's cow died. Hearing they made mallow soup and glutinous rice meal, the patient ate heartily while hungry. After a while, he had profuse diarrhea, felt pain in his intestines, and then passed the swallowed object. I thereby realized what the *Neijing* says: "The Liver suffers from tension; urgently eat sweet things to relax it." Beef, glutinous rice, and mallows are all sweet substances, thus they can loosen and relax the intestines and stomach. Moreover, the intestines had been empty for a long time, and encountering sweet and slippery substances allowed the copper and iron to pass down. (Being attentive at such moments, gaining insight everywhere, how can one's skills not be refined? This is why the ancients are unsurpassable.)
Recently, a young child played with a line weight, putting it in his mouth and accidentally swallowing it. A Hu monk fed him maltose sugar. Eating half a jin, it passed down with feces from the anus. The monk said: Anyone who accidentally swallows the "Five Metals" can eat maltose. Jinfeng heard briefly mention an old case in *Continued Medical Sayings*, where a monk used maltose to quickly extract an arrowhead from the eye.
Zhang Jingyue treated the son of the Wang family, just one year old. His mother gave him an iron nail to play with, which he swallowed into his throat. Upon visiting, he saw the mother holding the child upside down by the feet, hoping the nail would come out, causing blood from the mouth and nose. He advised her: "How can hanging upside down make it come out? Quickly hold him upright." Immediately, crying was heard. The nail had gone down the esophagus, not staying in the throat. Consulting the Materia Medica, iron fears Mirabilite (Puxiao). Thus, a method was found. Use Magnetite (Cishi) 1 qian, Mirabilite 2 qian, grind together into powder. Let the child take it mixed with boiled lard and honey. Swallowed in the afternoon, by the third watch (midnight), a substance was passed. It was clear like cabbage leaves, smooth and edgeless, protected by medicine on the outside. Inspecting it, the nail was inside. It was a mushroom-headed nail used for shoe-nailing in the capital. The intent of the prescription: Without Mirabilite, Magnetite cannot make the medicine adhere to the nail; without Magnetite, Mirabilite cannot drive the nail out quickly; without oil, there is no lubrication; without honey, it may not be slippery. Thus, the adhering adheres, the driving drives, the lubricating lubricates, working together to wrap and expel. (This is an outstanding case by Jingyue. If everyone could use methods so thoroughly, what fault could be found?)
Note: *Wuli Xiaoshi* also records that for children accidentally swallowing iron needles, using Frankincense (Ruxiang), Lychee seed, and Mirabilite ground into powder, mixed with dog or pig fat and salt, swallowed to heal itself. For broken iron, use Gleditsia sinensis (Zaojia) and Cinnabar (Zhusha). Lei Xue said: Iron meets Divine Cinnabar, mixing mud like powder. Divine Cinnabar should be Cinnabar. (Cinnabar is highly toxic, how can it be used lightly?)
A Ministry official had no sons, and his wife was extremely jealous. Her family was giving birth, and the baby was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around the placenta (Pan Chang Sheng). The wife secretly pricked the intestine with a fine needle. After the maternal family noticed, the infant often suffered unbearable sharp pain. The midwife privately told the maternal family, who informed the official. All doctors were helpless. A Quanzhen Daoist said: "I can cure him." Using a large piece of Magnetite, guiding it from the painful area to the navel, the needle emerged from the navel. The maternal family was completely unharmed. Discussed by Huang Zenan. (*Continued Jinling Trivial Matters*.)
Liu Yude, styled Huyin, knew medicine. Ye Yanan of Dongting's wife, five or seven days prior due to dissatisfaction, intended suicide, swallowing more than ten cloth pins. They consulted a spirit-writing medium who said: "I am the Envoy of Bixian." First asked if she swallowed pins? Then said: "Indeed she did, but the matter is harmless." The spiritual prescription wrote that ordinary prescriptions can treat it, asking again to write clearly. After a long time, it wrote asking Huyin's son. Visiting Liu to ask for the prescription, Liu taught him to use Oak Charcoal Powder 3 qian, mixed well water to swallow, which can expel it. If not expelled, take again. The person said: "My intention was to feed Magnetite, how do you think?" Liu said: "Absolutely not." (Popo means absolutely not.) Should take two large pieces of Magnetite, place outside the anus, perhaps it will work. Treated according to method, the pins indeed came out. (*Continued Jinling Trivial Matters*.)
*Bai Yi Xuan Fang* records filling a new ladle of clean water, holding it facing East, silently chanting: "Respectfully invite Supreme Lord East-Flowing Smooth Water, swiftly as Southern Great Emperor's Law." Chant once for seven repetitions, blow one breath into the water, blowing seven times, let the patient drink, expels immediately. Or use this blessed water to swallow needles and bamboo splinters. (Much simpler than Zihe's incantation case.)
For various bones stuck in the throat, take one bowl of clear water, use finger to write in the air above the water: "Heavenly Golden Rooster Cries, Earthly Grass Rooster Clucks, Two Roosters Become One, Nine Dragons Enter Sea, Throat Transforms Like Vast Ocean" (25 characters). Recite 7x7=49 times, drink, instantly healed. Previously, another method: one bowl clear water, finger writes above water: "Bird Flies Dragon Descends, Fish Transforms Danqiu" (8 characters). Drink, instantly effective. (Both from *Youyang Zazu*. Xiong notes: These are remnants of Zhuyou magic. Or writing "Water Lives Fish Dragon Smooth" 5 characters above water, drinking is also wonderful.)
Liu Huanlin's subordinate Ma Xiang's son, months old, accidentally dropped a gold net ring on the table, child swallowed it, crying bitterly. Xiang sought help from a doctor, who was out. Xiang waited at the door, restless. Someone asked why he was so panicked about his son's illness. Xiang told the story. Someone taught him to urgently buy several stems of Chinese chives, cook thoroughly without cutting, swallow together with broad beans. Not exceeding twice, it passed from the large intestine. This method is not recorded in medical books, so I publicize it. (*Beihao Jiyan*.)
Li Kui treated a person who accidentally swallowed fingernails, throat choked nearly to death. Kui ordered human fingernails to be cut and taken orally, instantly healed. Suspecting it was an ancient formula, Kui said: No. This is what the *Neijing* calls "Reducing by its affinity." Listeners sighed in admiration. (*Ningbo Prefecture Gazetteer*.)
Zihe treated Guo Xiangzheng's son from Dangtu, suffering cough, muscles and bones wasted. Doctors mostly considered it consumption (Lao). Zihe said: This is not worth worrying about. Seated, he gave him medicine. Suddenly, violent vomiting occurred. Asked to view the phlegm, there should be an object. Viewing it, a fishbone was found. Chronic illnesses all healed. (*Xin'an Zhi*.)
A rich man's son was choked by a chicken bone, hundred methods failed to treat, family panicked. Suddenly an old man arrived, claiming: "I have a clever technique, only need manual method to remove, no medicine needed." Promised thousand strings of cash as reward. Old man wrapped white sugar in silk cotton like a plum size, told him to swallow into throat, leaving half outside, pulling occasionally with hand. Making throat itch, suddenly phlegm surged out, bone stuck to cotton, paid as promised. (*Continued Medical Sayings*.)
Zhang Wenyuan treated Lady Cha Liangben. After anger, accidentally ate fish head, bone stuck in throat. Pressed with mantou and zongzi meat, bone went down, but felt chest discomfort. Took bone-dissolving medicine two doses, seven days passed, chest and diaphragm swollen and painful, food seemed to go down the back, aversion to cold and fever. Pulse: both hands wiry and rapid. Likely after bone sticking, pressing with hard objects injured the stomach, causing blood stasis accumulating between diaphragm, pushing esophagus backward, hence food feels like going down the back. Only by eliminating blood stasis, letting tube retract, can chest pain heal. Use Psoralea fruit (Wulingzhi) as Sovereign herb, Corydalis (Yuanhusuo), Hawthorn (Shanzha), Peach Kernel (Taoren), Bitter Orange (Zhiqiao) as Ministers, Red Peony Root (Chishao), Moutan Bark (Danpi), Cyperus (Xiangfu), Gardenia (Shanzhi) as Assistants, Bupleurum (Chaihu), Acorus (Shichangpu) as Envoys. Before taking, add one wine glass of Chinese chive juice. After taking, chest relaxed, bowel movement once, pain reduced greatly, food now goes down right side. Right chest/throat slightly painful, swallowing difficult, vomited phlegm with bloody smell. Changed prescription: Gardenia, Red Peony Root, Angelica Tail (Guiwei), Peach Kernel, Partridge Berry (Liujinu), Psoralea, Moutan, Pangolin Scales (Chuanshanjia), add chive juice. Two doses fully cured.
Zhang Jingyue said: Whenever objects stick in throat, or pierce bone, must get the reverse of sharp edges, thus prickly and not going down. Whatever goes down reversely, reversing it upwards makes it smooth. So treating this, should borrow the momentum of food/drink, surge and vomit it, making it exit upwards, as swift as pulling a thorn. If thorn is deep, forcing it down is not only logically impossible, but delays, or if food digests, nothing to push, leading to gradual swelling, harm is not small. Also said: For any bone sticking, take a large piece of maltose sugar, fill mouth and swallow. Or boil Chinese chives slightly cooked, do not cut, swallow a bundle, wrapping and going down, also wonderful.
*Gaopo Zuan Yi* records Hongtong Han Su, father of Zhongding Gong. At three years old, accidentally swallowed a nail. Family cried waiting for death. His grandfather, famous as divine doctor, examined and said: No danger, must wait three years, nail will come out. People did not believe, fixed date written on wall to wait. But every time abdominal pain occurred, fainted and revived, gradually became yellow and emaciated. When time came, told family: Child will recover, must act strongly, even if fainting do not fear, should first cook porridge to eat and wait. Soon abdomen truly hurt greatly, cried and fainted, after long time vomited, nail completely detached. Fainted again, recovered after time, gained peace for over a year, died at 71.
In Moling village, Jinling, a man surnamed Li, styled Shuquan, talisman water was superb, seeking from near and far always effective. His method: tell the stuck person to sit in their own Buddha hall, place a basin of clean water before Buddha, let relatives go burn talismans. After usage, slowly divinate with a small oracle tool saying: Already healed. Person returns to see clean water, the stuck object is inside, heals immediately. Seen personally. (*Zhi Fa Hui*.)
Zhang Zi's daughter named Po'er in Hutian Town, Jingdezhen, choked to death eating cake, breath not yet gone, must bury tomorrow, guarding corpse weeping bitterly. Suddenly heard knocking, asked who? Answer: I am river dweller, Chen Zeng Er. Zhang said: Why visit late at night? Answer: Know Po'er is unfortunate, but lift her sit up, beat back three times with broom, cake falls into belly, can live. Zhang opened door thanked, saw nothing. Tried method, not long, girl's belly like thunder, instantly well. Dawn searched for Chen Zeng Er, actually drowned seven years ago, ghost not yet reborn, still held compassion, heart thus, Zhang ordered monks to recommend deliverance. (*Yijian Zhi*.)
