Someone used Gu poison to harm patients. If one wishes to know the name of the perpetrator, burn old drum skin into powder and take one *cun* bi (a square-inch measure) with water. After a short while, the patient will spontaneously call out the name of the Gu master. One can instruct the patient to summon that person, and upon their arrival, the illness will be cured. There are also specific prescriptions for treating this condition. (*Medical Outline*)
Jiang Shixian, the nephew by marriage of Gan Bao, suffered from hematochezia (blood in stool) and claimed to have been poisoned by Gu. His family secretly placed a bag made of *Rang* grass (the character 'He' refers to a grass name not recorded in the *Bencao Jing*; *Tongzhi Lüe of Bencao* records it as originating from Fujian) under his mat. Jiang suddenly laughed and said, "The one who cast Gu on me is Zhang Xiao." They apprehended Zhang Xiao, who arrived and was ordered to lift the curse; Jiang's illness then recovered. The world considers this method an excellent prescription for treating Gu. (*Tongzhi Lüe of Bencao*)
The *Mei Shi Fang* states: Whenever one is poisoned by Gu, symptoms may include hematochezia resembling goose liver, hematemesis (vomiting blood), or severe pain in the heart and abdomen as if being bitten. If not treated immediately, the Gu worms will consume the five viscera, leading to death. To confirm if it is Gu, have the patient vomit water; what sinks is Gu, what floats is not. Burn old drum skin into ash and take one *cun* bi; shortly after, the patient will spontaneously call out the name of the Gu master. (*Compendium of Materia Medica*)
In the customs of the Yi people, there is the harm of Gu poison. One should always carry Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) in their sleeve. After finishing meals, chew a small amount. If there is poison, vomiting will occur immediately; if not, one remains safe. (*Shuoshi Xiantan*)
Take Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 生甘草) five qian, decoct to obtain half a cup of juice, drink it warm, and it will induce vomiting upon reaching the throat. For domestic Gu poison that has recently entered the abdomen, before the worms have hatched, vomiting will expel them. If concerned about incomplete expulsion, decoct another five qian and take it; adding Ban Ji (Ephedrae Herba, 麻黄) half a zhan is even better.
Consuming vinegar continuously during meals prevents Gu from entering the stomach. Additionally, the *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* states that Aristolochiae Caulis (Madouling Teng, 马兜铃藤) can expel Gu through urination. Use ten liang of Aristolochiae Caulis, one dou of water, and two sheng of wine; boil down to three sheng and divide into three doses. Take again if not cured. People call this the "Three Hundred Tael Silver Medicine."
One large spider, crushed and mixed with half a zhan of raw honey, taken orally. Gu fears spiders, hence the use of spiders to treat Gu. Since spiders themselves are toxic, honey is used to mitigate this toxicity. This prescription specifically treats Golden Silkworm Gu.
If Gu poison is located in the upper jiao, administer Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻) to induce vomiting; if in the abdomen, administer Curcumae Radix (Yujin, 郁金) to induce purgation. Alternatively, take both together; if vomiting does not occur, purgation will follow. Li Shilang Tao, when initially serving as a judicial official in Leizhou, obtained this prescription while adjudicating cases and saved many lives. (*Collected Works of Fan Shihu*)
In the jurisdiction of Xinzhou, there is a medicine called "Ji Cai," which can resolve various poisons and Gu with unparalleled efficacy. Once, someone traveled to Leizhou, encountered poisoning mid-journey, and appeared severely ill, believing death was imminent. He drank several inches of Ji Cai juice and recovered after one episode of vomiting. Folklore says: Previously, someone encountered poison, and his slave named Ji Cai found this herb, thus naming it after him. It is actually a root similar to Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Shaoyao, 芍药). When anyone encounters poisoning, secretly take two or three cun at night, chop or grind it, add a little Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), and decoct and drink it the next morning; recovery follows vomiting. The custom implies secrecy in taking this medicine, hence the phrase "secretly take."
Another account: An old woman once suffered from Gu. Her son, a minor clerk, was ordered by the county magistrate to give her Ji Cai. The medicine was prepared at night. In the morning, she told her son, "I dreamed someone warned me that drinking this would kill me." She threw it away and collapsed. Her son reported this to the prefect, who insisted she drink it, and she indeed recovered. Could it be that those poisoned by Gu also have divine protection or stubborn evil spirits? (*Records of Exile*)
"Jili" is a grass resembling Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu, 石斛), with roots resembling Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Shaoyao, 芍药). During the Huangwu era of Eastern Wu, Li Yu was exiled to Hepu due to a crime. Upon entering the territory, he encountered Gu poison, and his slave Jili used this herb to cure him, giving the herb its name. (This is the same as "Ji Cai" mentioned earlier.)
During the Jiyou year, Governor Chang An held the title of Western Judicial Commissioner. In a case where death resulted from raising Gu, the verdict had already been reached. Reviewing the files, it was found that a woman raising Gu spied on wealthy merchants returning from long trade trips, knowing they carried wealth. She hired a neighbor to visit their home, feigning greetings, then concealed Gu in her finger and flicked it, causing immediate death. The victim's family suspected her, arrested her, and handed her to the authorities, uncovering the truth. According to her confession, when first married, she possessed nineteen Gu; after marriage, she and her husband harmed six more people, increasing the total to twenty-five. Of the six victims, three had confirmed evidence, two were exhumed corpses, and one belonged to the accused's own household. I was skeptical but did not believe it. The next day, I summoned the woman for re-interrogation, and she confessed everything clearly. I ordered her to present the Gu she raised. She produced a bamboo tube, which was empty. She stated that the court's righteous energy prevented evil spirits from entering, requiring incantations and sacrifices to the household deity first. Upon saying this, the Gu appeared: red, wriggling worms. I ordered them to be trampled into mud by foot. The clerk reported they were not destroyed; when the woman called them, they remained in the tube, unchanged in number. Thus, a method to eliminate them was sought: placing the Gu worms in a stone box, sealing it with an official seal, and throwing it into the river, thereby destroying the Gu. Gu is extremely harmful. Some say hedgehogs can capture Gu worms, leaving none hidden. However, Gu consists of various types. The most toxic type persists even if cut by knives, shattered by stones, burned by fire, or buried in earth. It attaches to women, kills victims instantly upon biting, and transports the victim's property after death to benefit the Gu raiser. Each victim adds one Gu to the collection. Some say the victim's soul attaches and becomes Gu. (*Notes from Official Travels*. Note by Xiong: Although not a medical case, it broadens knowledge.)
Chen Ziming stated: In the valleys of Liangguang, there is a herb called Human, also known as Duanchang (Intestine-Cutting), or sometimes caused by snake venom producing malignant fungi, named "Nian Yao" (Year-Determining Medicine). An adulteress involved with a northern man secretly placed this drug in food/drink upon parting, explaining, "You must come at a certain time. If you arrive on schedule, I will provide the antidote; if you miss the deadline, you will surely die." Hence the name Nian Yao. Taking one pill of Shenxian Zhuidu Wan (Immortal Poison-Chasing Pill) cures the illness. Prescription: Fimbristylidis Perianthium (Wubeizi, 五倍子) three liang, Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma (Shancigu, 山茨菰) two liang, Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) three qian, Sparganii Rhizoma Qianjinzi (Qianjinzi, 千金子) de-oiled one liang, Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix Hongya (Hongya Daji, 红芽大戟) one and a half liang. Grind each into powder, mix with thick rice gruel to form pills, dividing into forty pills. Take one pill per dose, ground with well water or Mint Decoction (Bohe Tang, 薄荷汤). Purge one or two times, then stop with congee. This pill resolves all poisons. Also known as Taiyi Dan Zijin Dan, Shenxian Taiyi Dan, Yushu Dan, and Shenxian Jiedu Wanbing Dan. It is best compounded on Dragon Boat Festival, Double Ninth Festival, or Qixi Festival, in a clean place, avoiding all taboos. (Note by Xiong: Human is also known as Yege and Leigongteng, found in eastern Zhejiang. Locals use it to kill vegetable pests, calling it Chong Yao (Insect Medicine). In Wuzhou, I often heard that those attempting suicide died after taking it. Lawsuits frequently arose, and bans failed to stop it. Its toxicity seems fiercer than Nian Yao. Snake mushrooms kill quickly too. Perhaps Chong Yao is not made of these two, but all can be rescued by Yushu Dan.)
